unlimited hydroplanes

The recent Seafair race brought back a lot of memories for me about hydroplanes and hydroplane history. I'm curious how well-known this sport is outside of traditional race locations like Seattle, Detroit, Madison and the Tri-Cities (WA) areas.

Feel free to use this thread to discuss all aspects of hydroplanes and hydroplane history...

It was the biggest day of the year (except Christmas) when I was a kid.

Don't think it's going to be around much longer though. When the boat builders ran out of cheap surplus WWII engines it just got too expensive for the little guys -- and it's just not popular enough to recoup the expense for corporate sponsors.

There was some good close racing at the Seafair race though, that is one thing that is improving even as the sport continues to fade.
