Political Compass - where does yours point?

I came across this earlier today and thought it was fascinating ... especially as my politics are somewhat diamtrically opposed to most American politicians, most English people I've seen do this have come up in the same 'sector' as mine and I was wondering where the chaps here would pop-up.

Take the Test

When did they administer these tests to Romney and Obama?

I always find these tests don't really represent my position well due to the lack of "Don't care" options in some of the questions that will make a big difference to the results.

I really don't care about religion or homosexuality, but the questions want me to come down on a particular side of the fence.

My thoughts on abortion are that it should be frowned upon, but not illegal as long as it is carried out early in the pregnancy. I can't understand why this is such a huge issue in the US, and the left wing celebration of abortion is not attractive. Sadly I don't have an option to enter this as an answer.

I'm surprised how left leaning people are generally (and also that fairly few appear to be libertarian, I've never thought of myself as overly that way - but I seem to lean there more than most).

Marc, I am almost exactly in the same position as you. Should I move to England as part of some utopian hippie exchange program?

I'm pretty sure we've done this before.

I'm at -7.38/-4.26, which is basically about where Gandhi hangs out. That's interesting as I used to be less left but was more authoritarian.

Also, I'm like Ryan where I have some issues with some of these issues being real non-starters to me but I have to pick one or another. There's no "don't care/non-issue" option and I think that would severely influence the results. There's also some real bias as to how these results are calculated. How does one explain that religious "conservatism" and support of corporations is "right" leaning, for instance, considering they have very little in common in other political systems and are quite contradictory. It's very American based.

I'm nothing if not consistent. These tests are, of course, imperfect but they're at least generally interesting.

Economic Left/Right: 7.12
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 6.21
(My pro-choice stance tends to drop me a little on the SL/A scale)

I have given this test to over 500 seniors in my goverment classes over the years, and it's always the same results. Each time the vast majority of the class is in a small cluster in the upper right corner of the green sector.

Looking at how far romney and obama are from their belifs, this becomes a great way for me to show why the youth don't vote and feel unrepresented.

I tell them as they get older and start getting real paychecks they will move from: how they think the government should be, to: how come the government takes so much of my money

I find it interesting that Jon is the closest to the 'mainstream' political people out of all of those I've seen posting their results here so far and most here appear to have similar results to the 'youth' you refer to.

Whether this is 'typical' for America is hard to determine it could be that this forum is far more liberal than most .... but its interesting all the same.

(my personal gut-instinct is that there is a common mis-connect between what politicians implement and what the 'people' really want - this is one of the reasons why people are cynical about politicians)

Could be - most people came out far more left leaning that I expected ... more data required.

(I was also surprised I am apparently so libertarian myself )

Another common flaw to these tests is finding the balance between what politicians say and what politicians do. It's not up there in influencing results with, say, the selection of questions but it's often a factor.

For example (just an easy one), my result plots roughly the same as Romney's ... the titular architect of Romneycare. He can say whatever he likes, but that's such an enormous gap in positions that it highlights how inaccurate comparing plot points can be. (If we reversed the roles, he could say the same about our enormous difference on abortion)

Perhaps the test is designed to make all those who take it think they are further to the left than they really are?

Question #1: Assuming all the world is one nation, do you care more about people or corporations?

Um....people?

Congrats, you are most like Joseph Stalin!

Cool...wait...what?

Considering I think I've mentioned the flaws of the test in practically every other post in this thread, I think you know where I am.

The other problem with this test is how some of the questions are phrased. I may disagree on whether or not gay/lesbian couples should be allowed to adopt, but that doesn't mean I think it needs to be legislated.

In other words, I may side with something personally, but don't think there should be any legislation limiting or permitting it.

I usually come out really liberal in these things even though I hate the Democratic party and even though really confident, judgmental liberalism turns me off way more than confident, judgmental conservatism.
