Yes, my email got hacked.

Since I've gotten three PMS and two emails already from FOFCers asking if my email got hacked, I might as well put it out there that yes, it did. Yahoo did detect it and sent me a notice.

Was, literally, just getting ready to ask about this. Off to delete the email.

You better check the time stamp on when that email was sent and when the suspicious login occurred just to make sure.

I don't believe the hacker knows about the Patroitic undies, so I'm going to assume that one is real.

Lot of Yahoo accounts seem to be getting hacked lately. Know of 3 people in the last 2 months.

Were you using the same password for it as you do on other sites? These things make me wonder if I should do that cell phone authorization for Gmail. If I lost access to my e-mail, I'd be in trouble.

That's the interesting part. No, I wasn't using that password anywhere else. It was was just a random 8-character combination of letters and numbers. Either they just got very lucky with their password generators, or they have a keylogger on my machine (very doubtful.) I've now gone to a 14-character random combination of letters, numbers, and symbols. *shurg*

That would scare me. Does Yahoo have a 2-step verification option?

As a helpful hint, once you get about 12 or so characters, the randomness of the characters really isn't an issue. For attackers to do a brute force process, to figure out the password, it would take an massive amount of time to try every combination on 12+ length passwords. To make it easier on yourself, use a long sentence or a phrase that is easy for you to remember, and it will serve the same purpose. Spaces are legal characters in passwords. If you used a sentence with 20 characters as your password, that would take several CPU years to brute force crack.

I knew the message was spam immediately, when I realized it included no information about whether or not my kid needed a sleeping bag.

This is good information, but I also feel its important to consider library attacks when generating a passphrase. I would imagine that using common phrases or quotes might be weak against the ever-evolving hacking industry. Some great advice I read for creating a passphrase is to simply combine three or four words that don't normally go together, like "grasscherryking".
