Mount Rushmore of Board Games
I thought this would be a cool Mount Rushmore idea.

Monopoly and Clue are easy picks for me. I would have to think about the others.

First blush -
Monopoly Scrabble Yahtzee Battleship I'd have to think about whether or not that would be my final list, though. |

I think the first two are no-brainers:
1) Monopoly 2) Chess I don't think anything comes close to those two. To round out the list I would include: 3) Risk - probably played more hours of this board game than any other in my history. 4) Settlers of Catan - Wanted to go a little bit outside of the traditional board games with this one. This might actually be my favorite board game of all time. I guess you can call it the Civilization of board games (kind of). |

I initially put Settlers in there, but took it out because I think it's a little too "niche" for a Rushmore. Chess is a great one that I completely didn't think about. Probably replaces Battleship on my list.

This is heavily influenced by the games I've been playing recently - I can't really think of any classic games that even come close anymore.

Does anyone love Monopoly? I know a lot of people that have played it, but I can't name one person that loves Monopoly.

Chess Trivial Pursuit Parcheesi I have a super sentimental attachment to parcheesi, my grandparents had it, they lived 3 houses down the street from us and from about age 6 to age 10 I'd come home from school every single day and visit them and we very very often played this. My grandfather died earlier this year(grandmother did 10 years ago) and we found the Parcheesi board in his closet and my sister and I have played a few times |

Statis Pro Baseball and Football. Wish they woulda drawn enough widespread love to get in on the Mount Rushmore of board games. Really the only board games I enjoyed playing.
Sure, we had stupid game nights - but, meh. And, during the day - we never were inside to play any games. |

Speaking of Monopoly, did you see they have an "Electronic Banking" version out now? No more paper money and letting your kids use their math skills, nope, now its just slide your debit card through the credit card reader and let it take care of the math. Sacrilege I tell you!

Yeah, we saw that but stick with our old fashion version. Not because we think it is teaching a huge amount of skills to the kids that they don't already have, but it just feels weird to me. |

I heard about this, but didn't think about how that meant no math was involved. I'll definitely have to look for older versions of the game when our kids are old enough. Or maybe I can just take the bills from my current board, and just make them use the electronic version to check their work. |

I bought this and made my wife play it with me once. It took like 7 hours over 2 days to finish. I loved it. But it has been gathering dust ever since. I need to see if my 10 and 8 year olds are old enough to get this now.

It's not the standard set, just an alternative one (like Monopoly City, Monopoly Here and Now, etc). They still sell the base set with money (though *recolored* money, grrr). Oh, and what Quik said.

My prob with Settlers is that although it may be the gold standard, it's not nearly the most fun of the Euros. I think games like Carcassonne or Ticket to Ride are much more fun to play.

That version has been out for awhile. A few years back the game Life went electronic with their 'Twists and Turns' version. The vast majority of the big named type games - Monopoly, Life, Scrabble, Stratego, etc have some type of electronic version out.

Of course, my own Mt Rushmore (and not what I think it should be) is
Ambush Arkham Horror Heroquest Dark Tower If you had a really loose definition of board game, I'd have to include D&D, but that isn't one in my eyes and I'm not a big Dungeon! fan.

I'm not sure I even consider chess a board game. Yes, it's a game, played on a board, so that's kind of stupid. But it's just kind of off on a more distinguished plane than Monopoly or Life. "Board Game" has kind of a lower culture vibe to me. So personally, I'm doing:

I like Tomb much more than Dungeon! (although it is pretty much the same game.. Tomb just has more 'stuff'). Tomb definitely needed some house rules for us though.

I don't play Settlers much anymore, but it is THE gateway to Euros. If I had my druthers, I would probably put Advanced Squad Leader (ASL) in there as the Holy Grail of wargames. If I had a desert island with a guaranteed opponent and could bring one game that would be it.
