Mount Rushmore: R.E.M. Songs

The lads from Athens called it a career this week. What four songs of theirs make your Mount Rushmore?

To kick things off, here's my picks:

Losing My Religion
This song to me is R.E.M. at their peak. This song was their official arrival to rock super-stardom.

Fall On Me
This was the first song of theirs I really got into. Once I heard this song, I started investigating their earlier stuff.

Everybody Hurts
A truly great song that hits on so many different levels. If you are having a bad day, this song helps it make it seem not so bad.

The One I Love
This song put them on the map. Before this, they were still mainly an alt/indie band. A glimpse into what was to come.

Even if it's not top four, I have a soft spot for Nightswimming.

Stand and Shiny, Happy People made me hate the band for a long time.

Almost everything on the first four albums is great--after that, it was very hit-and-miss, with more misses than hits, but here goes:

Driver 8
Begin the Begin
Kohoutek
Swan Swan H

I grew up around an hour from Athens, and started listening to REM in 1986 or so when I was in high school. Their music has been up and down but taken as a whole, they have a large number of really great songs. Don't think I could do a Mount Rushmore though - my favorite album is Automatic for the People - I love the low-fi, slower sound to it and love almost all the songs on it.

A lot of their recent albums haven't been so great but they are really one of the bands that has been part of the soundtrack of my life, from highschool till now.

But man, the 2nd half of Out of Time is so good -- I'm tempted to also just roll with Belong, Half a World Away, Texarkana, and Country Feedback, and pretend I'm 14 again.

Bought everything from Reckoning through Up on the day of release, one of my all-time favorite bands........though I did not enjoy the last three at all and it was time to hang it up.

Harborcoat
Country Feedback
Electrolite
Fall On Me

Loved their early stuff and then they just fell out of favor with me in the late 90s.

1. Fall on Me
..
..
..
..
2. Radio Free Europe
3. So Central Rain
4. Great Beyond

I put a huge gap between 1 and the rest because Fall on Me is one of my favorite songs by any band.
