Iowa Wrestling Ties Mark
Iowa beat Indiana tonight, 26-12 to extend their unbeaten streak to 84. This ties the record held by Oklahoma State, who set it from 1959-1966.
Ironically, Iowa wrestles Oklahoma State Saturday (1-7) night in Iowa City. A win breaks the record. Go Hawks! |

I wonder why people don't raise hell about the NCAA wrestling post season like they do with college football (spare me the obvious no one cares response). You wrestle dual meets all season long, and then the NCAA tournament is a tournament by weight class with individual scoring. So, if you have a couple of outstanding wrestlers, you can place very high at the NCAA tournament even if you never won a dual meet all season.

Same thing goes for high school track. One year a school won it with four people.

dola: Plus, wrestling is an individual sport anyway. There are no teams in the real sense of a team, just collections of individuals.

Iowa lost 17-16.
It was 16-16 after the matches. The way they break ties is by points scored by the wrestlers. OSU outscored us 54-49. |

A kid from my brother's hometown just won his fourth straight NCAA title.
Amazingly, each year was a different weight class. http://espn.go.com/college-sports/st...s-four-weights

Even more cool that he went up a weight to challenge the guy who was "Most Outstanding Wrestler" from the previous season.

The WWE sent a scout to watch him and apparently will make him an offer, so he must have some charisma in addition to the athleticism. I know a lot of star amateur wrestlers go on to pro wrestling but I don't recall actual in-person scouting like this. The demise of Olympic wrestling will probably push some of these guys more quickly into pro wrestling and MMA. |

Thats awesome. Great career. Very impressive. He has a college coaching career ahead of him if he doesnt go WWE.
I was listening to a MMA radio show they have on our local ESPN affiliate. They were saying losing wrestling in the Olympics would hurt MMA. Many kids might lose the desire to participate because of the lack of a world championship . They were saying it would help in the short term, but not the long term.

Well, the Olympics are still in play for 2016, and Dake specifically moved up to 165 this year on advice from the national team program. Pretty amazing feat for him. His match was the best of the night. |

Long time bump. 3 in a row is impressive. Not quite as impressive as 9 in a row, but still impressive. #1 Iowa beat #2 Minnesota tonight 23-12. Who needs football? Iowa is #1 in wrestling again.

Looks like we will have a new team national champion this year. Ohio State has a big lead heading into the last day of the tournament. Missouri was actually ranked number one coming into the tournament but fell way back including two losses by top seeded wrestlers to OSU wrestlers in the semifinals. I think Iowa and Cornell have a very slim shot to catch OSU. Finals on ESPN tonight.

Yeah. I think Ohio St. is going to win it. Iowa needs a miracle.
I should wander down there to watch it.

I don 't think it will matter. MMA is a lot more driven by the Judo, BJJ and MUay Thai disciplines. Sure being a former wrestler isn't a bad thing but anyone disciplined in two the year would wipe the Octagon with most wrestlers. |
