BBCF Columbus State Cougars (Restart in Sun Belt)

PRELIMINARY COMMENTS
Getting the beta of the next game patch inspired me to go ahead and do what I've wanted to do for a while: restart this career in the Sun Belt. From talking with Arlie, and my 10ish seasons playing CSU as an Indy, I realized that this would be a much better way of doing things, and probably much more fun. The schedule will be quite a bit more reasonable for a team with 20 Prestige, with at least seven other bottom feeders on the docket every season. I did some testing on the beta patch last night, and feel comfortable enough with it, stability-wise, to go ahead and dive into starting the career. (Another reason for the restart is that there's one minor feature improvement that will not work with 1.02 saved careers, although that could change by the time it is released.)

THE SETUP
Easy. I moved North Texas out of the Sun Belt and made them an Independent, and moved Columbus State in, creating a conference of all southeastern region teams (initial prestige in parenthesis):

Arkansas State (25)
Columbus State (20)
Florida Atlantic (25)
Florida International (25)
Louisiana-Lafayette (30)
Louisiana-Monroe (25)
Middle Tennessee State (25)
Troy (30)

I also used SchedMatch to set us up to play North Texas every season, giving us at least eight potentially-winnable games a year. Also, given the proximity of Columbus State to Troy, I set them up as our rival school.

EDITED TO ADD: Just as an FYI, I used an edited version of pstats 1.5 for my file. Obviously, it is edited to make the moves mentioned above, but it is also edited for realism with regards to the high schools in Georgia producing prospects in more realistic proportions. For example, my game-suggested inital starting lineup has kids from: Wheeler, Chamblee, Washington (2), SW DeKalb (2), Gainseville, Social Circle, Buford, Rome, Hawkinsville, Heritage (Rockdale), Dalton, North Clayton, and Warner Robins. Here are the schools on our initial roster with multiple players:

Buford (3)
Doublass (2)
North Clayton (2)
Northside-WR (3)
SW DeKalb (3)

Stephenson (2)
Washington (2)

Sadly, our initial roster has nary a player from the T-U-C, but I'm sure that will change with time.

Well, as bad as my coordinator is, it truly is a crap shoot how good these guys are. Romanowski, being the best-rated and a Senior, will get the nod initially, with Mackey being the next option.

We're going to run a vertical passing offense, (You'll understand when you see my receivers,) so the fullback position is not critical at all. Again with the level of my scouting, this position is a crapshoot.

Yup. Best-scouted position, worst-looking unit. I'm guessing that most of my players should look more like these guys.

OVERALL IMPRESSION: I get stuck with very cheap coaches (lowest prestige, makes sense) and therefore really have not much of a clue how my skill position players stack up. I'll have to pay close attention in the early weeks and probably make a good number of adjustments.

Well, Morris and Ross look like legit players, at least through my scout's eyes. At least I know that Morris is solid, 'cause scout error ain't THAT bad.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: The secondary looks to be our strong suit on defense. We're picked to finish 8th in the Sun Belt. It would be nice to grab a few wins, though.

2005 FIRST HALF
WEEK ONE, at 0-0 SMU (-10)
We fall 13-7 to the Ponies. Given my scouting issues, I set QB and RB playing times to 75% each to check out my options. Romanowski outplays Mackey in this first one, but neither shines, so I'll just go 50-50 next week against Buffalo, to figure out a starter when conference play commences. Our running game did quite well, though. Moore had 15 carries for 123 yards, and Roundtree 4 for 34. I'll get them 50/50 playing time, and more carries next week. The defense only gave up 260 yards, and really our 6 turnovers lost (3ints and 3 fumbles) did us in more than anything else. I'll stick with the initial rotation on defense.
WEEK TWO, vs. 0-0 Buffalo (-7)
This week, the running game was really stymied, although Roundtree (5 for 25) did pretty well and earns the starting job going into conference play. Mackey outplayed Romanowski this week, and enters conference play with a higher passer rating, plus he's younger. He becomes the starter. We lose 24-14, but this was a largely experimental game again. At this point, I'm more concerned with figuring out my personnel than anything else, and one thing I know for sure: T Jason Gehrke will NOT be starting any more: 0 pancakes, 0 krb, 5 sacks allowed, and 2 missed blocks in 2 weeks.

WEEK THREE (OFF)

WEEK FOUR, at 1-2 Louisiana-Laf (+9)
Ugh. We get our butts handed to us 38-13, and Mackey is a dismal 6 for 36 for 100 yards with 3 INT's. Ouch. The only offensive bright spot is RB Steve Moore, who carries 11 times for 99 yards to give him 6.94 ypc on the year. He's getting the football henceforth.

WEEK FIVE, at 0-3 FIU (+4)
The quarterback carousel continues at CSU, but this time in victory. We win 15-9. Mackey comes off the bench due to an injury to Romanowski (who is ready to roll next week), and plays quite well, much better than Romanowski had been playing in that game: 11 for 21 for 187 yards with 1 TD and 0 INT vs. Romanowski's 4 for 10 for 58 yards with an INT. The running game gets stymied all around. The two QB's have ratings of 92.5 and 92.4. Back to 50% playing time.

WEEK SIX, at 2-2 Arkansas State (+12)
The defense has a hand in this big 34-16 win for us, coming up with 3 takeaway, all leading to points. Neither Mackey nor Romanowski separates himself, so we'll stick with 50/50 QB rotation later, but Romanowski is questionable due to broken ribs, so Mackey will get the start for a bit. Moore rushes for 100 yards on 27 carries, and Crabtree chips in 81 on 20.

WEEK SEVEN, at 0-5 FIU (+6)
RB Moore's 22 carries for 125 yards and a TD lead the way in this 20-13 win to put us 3-1 in conference play.

And so, having passed the first half of conference play:

2005 SECOND HALF

WEEK EIGHT, vs. 3-4 MTSU (+1)

We move into serious contention for a conference championship with a win this week. Everything really comes together offensively in this one: Mackey is 22 for 36 for 308 yards with 3 TD's and an INT, and Moore rushes for 123 yards as we win 24-17.

WEEK NINE, at 0-6 North Texas (-7)

The Mean Green punish us for sticking 'em with the Indies, 53-14. Ouch. Not much to say about this, other than I'm glad it isn't a conference game.

WEEK TEN, vs. 3-3 La.-Monroe (-1)

Ack. ULM erases all serious hopes of a conference title as we fall 37-10. Pity, too, because La-Laf lost this week to fall to 3-1. We would have been very much in the thick of it had we been able to win, but now we need a lot of help.

WEEK ELEVEN: OFF

WEEK TWELVE, at 4-5 San Jose St. (+15)

We head out west and open up a can, 36-13. Mackey throws for 279 yards, and Moore rushes for 132. Nice!

WEEK THIRTEEN: OFF

WEEK FOURTEEN, vs. 5-5 Troy (+2)

We win our rivalry game, AND POST A WINNING SEASON! WOOHOOOOOO!!!! The 23-13 win is spearheaded by Macket, who threw for 260 yards, 2 TD's and 0 INT's. We end up losing the conference title to La.-Laf due to the head-to-head tiebreaker, but finish 5-2 in the conference.

Weird that you had two Strong Safeties make the All-Conference team (2nd & 3rd team). Did you play one out of position or something?

No. Since the defense was playing pretty well, I didn't pay close attention there. Lowe was the nickel back and racked up all those tackles. I probably should have played him more...

Good news! The move of Tracy Myers to RB increases his running rating to 78, and his overall to 58/58. He's got a good chance to start this year.

Man, Mackey is quite mobile at QB and durable with high instincts, and we've got several good RB's. Sounds like a recipe to install an Option offense.

Defensively, I'm going with the 4-3.

I think so, but that's not what I did here. I didn't want to get a few years in then have a career-ending crash due to the configuration. Instead, I wanted to be "safe," so all I did was go into the "Teams" table and replace the line for Temple with the info for Columbus State, and then had CSU and NTSU swap conferences.

2006 First-Time Starters
RB Tracy Myers--JUCO transfer converted from QB to RB. 78 running, 73 agi, 64 spd. This guy looks legit.
FB Chris Stamper--Won't get many carries, but his 63 in run blocking should be quite helpful in the option game.
WR Everett Mallard--Red-shirt freshman. WR is a position of liability for us this year, which is another reason for the switch to option offense.
TE Michael Oliva--The true frosh with strong potential looks liek the best option from Day 1.
OT Tony Wildung--He can block pretty decently. Started 2 games last year as a Sophomore.
OG Derrick Taylor--Another true freshman getting a start. He loooks pretty decent right now, with great potential.
C Ike George--I'm concerned about him, and the center position as a whole.
DE Bill Henderson--Started two games last year. 5th-year senior is good tackler.
DT Rogers Kiel--Yet another true freshman strater. 62 p.o.a and 61 pass rush moves.
OLB Andrew Lewis--Pretty decent run stopper.
CB Jermaine Thompson--Red-shirt freshman with 70 cover skills.
SS John Lowe--Got to play a good bit last year as Junior. Started one game.
Lots of new starters this year, but feeling very good about QB/RB's. Here's the update as a whole (links should be working, so roster and player cards can be viewed, too):

UPDATE: While away for Christmas, I played some. Here is a brief capsule:

2006: We went 3-9 running the option. Mackey wasn't as impressive as his ratings would indicate: 51.3%, 106.5 rating. Post-2006 recruiting wasn't that impressive, either. We landed the #103 recruit class.

Here's the pre-2007 roster. Everythiing is uploaded and current, so links are active.

Just an FYI:

I'm enjoying playing this game a lot more than I am writing up a dynasty thread about it, especially since I broke continuity over Christmas. That's not to say that I might not update this thread a bit as we go along, but don't expect the kinds of detailed team write-ups that I was doing earlier, fyi.

Yeah, once you get out of that groove and start playing faster (obviously without updating a dynasty helps) dynasty writing can get kind of stale. FWIW though, I've enjoyed your trials and tribulations and hope you continue to update it, even if it's just to see how you're doing.

Since I'm taking a low tier team, I like to read what others are able to do with the same prestige team (minus Quiksand)

Entering 2010 recruiting now, so next year will be the first that all of my players will be the results of recruit seasons. Results so far:

2005: 6-5 (5-2)
2006: 3-9 (3-4)
2007: 7-5 (4-3)
2008: 2-10 (1-6)
2009: 5-7 (3-4)

Our prestige is up to 24, still last in the Sun Belt, but closing in on the others. With 18 schollies, we actually are getting $40K per week for recruiting this year. Nice!

Perhaps there's movement, gents. I signed a 3-star QB and a 3-star WR in this class!

QB Tracy Brooks, out of Carver High School in Columbus, comes in rated 44/60, and WR Bernie Smith, from Camden County, is 53/58 with 73 speed. I also signed the #38 FB in the nation.

Are you playing with the new patch?

Nah, I'll let y'all know when I am.

Went 7-5 (5-2) in 2010. Prestige rises to 26, drawing me even with FIU and FAU. I'm no longer alone in last in the Sun Belt in Prestige. WOOHOO!

For my work up to now, I get my first half-decent job offer: Stanford. I'm staying at CSU for now, though. Considering that I was 2nd in the Conference with the first team that was fully "mine," I'd like to at least see if we can win a Bowl or two before I would decide to leave.

Oh, and FWIW, I can visually see the progress of my team pretty easily. In my first few seasons, I always seemed to have 6-8 guys starting who were "Deep Red" (poor). In 2010, I only had two, and I had three or four "Yellow" (Average) starters. This year, before final player development, I have 4 Yellow guys (none seniors, either), and 23 "Orange" (Below Average). Only seven of the Orange are seniors. Slow progress, but it does appear to be progress.

So... I'm dying for a RB in my career, and I'm wondering whether this might be the way to get a respectable guy. So I'm looking for guys labeled as QB(A) who grade out well in running when scouted - anything else seem to be helpful in a future position switch?

Yeah. QB(A) guys can work as RB's and WR's. My current RB was a 2-star QB who ran for 998 yards and 4.97 ypc as a sophomore, and will probably be a 3 or even 4-star player by the time he graduates. So far, the factors I see for guys becoming RB's are scouted running ability, ypc in high school, and size.

Can this be done mid-career?

If I wanted to play a career as a nothing team, could I do something like this:

-Rename and reloctate Temple, and assign them a low prestige rating like 20

-After I reach a certain milestone, switch my conference alignment with some team and essentially join a conference

-Perhaps do so again, if I reach another milestone?

This might be an intriguing way to play for some of us... a backdoor way at an "up the ladder" challenge.

(Maybe this even begs for a third party utility... you might be able to simulate the sort of thing we see in FBCB, where teams have some inter-conference movement every so often -- you could export results in some fashion to another program, which would then decide what moves should be made and directly rewrite the database information to reflect the changes.. interesting...)

I'm pretty sure that you could. You'd have to change the pstats and psetup files in the savegame folder, rather than the main game folder. I've made changes mid-career using those files, so I don't see any reason why you cuoldn't move someone to a new conference that way.

Ugh... I recruited a handful of QB(A) players, only to (apparently) miss the timing to wsitch them to other positions -- I desperately need someone at RB and WR for this team. I was readong elsehwhere that you could only do it during a narrow window, for some reason right after training camp byut before the regular season -- I though that meant right after the several stages of "training camp" in the game, but it seems I'm wrong, as I'm up to my regular season beginning with no option to do so. *shurg*

You can do it at any time during the six stages of training camp. The idea, I think, is that it takes time to learn a new position and training camp is the only stage of the season where that time is available.

I haven't tried doing it without assigning them 30 or more points to "Adaptability," so I can't say with 100% certainty how crucial it is to do so, but if things are working as advertised, that would be an important thing to do, too.
