To explain my joke a little bit, I'm kind of the "Arena Football" guy around these parts.

I knew that Pumpy. I've seen pictures of you at Voodoo games and stuff. So, yeah, I get it. I think it'll be awesome, of course, it'd be better if it was for PSP, but...that's okay.

OK, I didn't know how well-known my self-promoting AFL fan image was. Awesome.
Anyway, as far as the game is concerned, I love the concept. I wonder if it will be compatible with the XBox 360. That will have some influence over whether I buy the game or not. The game doesn't have a franchise mode in it, so that's a bit of a downer. I think it'd be a little weird playing the same season over and over and over again. It looks like it could be great for online play, but I imagine that people will find ways to cheat or "cheese" in the game, and that would take most of the fun out of it. I've read that EA is trying to work around a lot of the ways that cheesers could take advantage of the game. I think they are going to limit the number of defenders you can put on the line of scrimmage or something like that. There's only so much EA can do, though. There are specific rules about rushing the quarterback in the AFL, and if EA does not implement those properly, I fear that online play will be next to impossible. That's always been a big problem with online Madden for me. I never have enough time to get a pass off because a lot of online players use "glitches" to get to the quarterback in the blink of an eye. We'll see.

After I complete a season, I will attempt to play the online mode some, and I only hope that the cheesers will still be confused about the different between a mack lineback and a jack linebacker, and they'll get called for illegal defense a whole bunch. Not bloody likely.

Pumpy,
On a more serious note, what is going to happen to the VooDoo? Are they coming to back to N.O. next year? |

Anyway, as far as the VooDoo is concerned, I believe that the team will have first shot at any players who were under contract at the time of dispersal. The VooDoo had just signed about 10 of their players back, including all-time passing leader Andy Kelly. If the team returns next year, I hope that they can get many of the players back. VooDoo football was really growing on us down there, and I think it'd be great if the fans have some recognizable faces on the team next season. I just hope Benson doesn't screw this up.

Gamespot gave it a 6.9. They mentioned that the franchise (called season) mode is barren with few options, the gameplay can't decide whether it is arcade or sim and does neither well, and that the presentation is very bland. Also, it said they do a poor job of capturing the essence of the AFL. However, they praise the big hits and the telemetry system used in the game.

It would only be cool if they had the AF2. Then I could play with the AF2 champion Memphis Explorers.

Well, as you all would expect, I have the game. I haven't read any reviews, but I agree with the comments that gstelmack referenced. The game does feel like Arena Football. I created the VooDoo and placed a lot of their old players on the team, then I played half a game against Grand Rapids. Since I know the VooDoo team, I can say that the players did play a lot like their real-life counterparts. That was good to see.
As far as bad things, the graphics really aren't very good. The players look decent, but there's practically no crowd to speak of. There are also some really dorky cutscenes that remind me of Blitz: The League. While a coach yelling at his player works in Blitz, it looks out of place here. The on-field animations are kinda goofy, too. The game still plays well if you understand the Arena game, so I can live with it. I've barely stepped into the franchise mode. It does appear to be rather basic, but what could it have, really? I wasn't expecting a franchise mode at all (as you can see earlier in this thread). The game lets you play up to 20 seasons. Yeah, I know limits suck, but I never even got through 5 seasons of Madden or NCAA Football, and I love those games. I doubt that I'll get anywhere near 20 seasons of Arena Football. There are contracts and free agency, and I assume that there's a draft between seasons. I don't really know what else could be expected. To me, the franchise mode is fine. Right now, the only thing that really bugs me is the camera selection. There are only two choices, AFL and Classic, neither of which is very good. The AFL camera is too close to the line of scrimmage for my liking. The Classic camera is a little bit too high. Classic gives a better view of the field, but I just wish that it was at a slightly different angle. I'll get used to it. I'm still without XBox Live right now, so I can't touch the online play right now. I think the cheesers are going to have some problems on defense, considering the AFL's rules. I can almost hear the whistles for illegal defense penalties from here. EA did a nice job of implementing the rules, and it actually enforces them. As a test, I blitzed a DB on an extra point attempt and got flagged for it. I also accidentally stepped my jack linebacker out of the box (lol jack-in-the-box lol) on one play and got flagged for that, too. If you don't know the defensive rules, there are tutorials in the game to explain them. If you accidentally break one of the rules in the game and get a penalty, it will explain why you got flagged. I find that to be a nice touch, rather than having the game just say "illegal defense." I may have to tweak penalty settings (what's new?), but other than that, it plays well for me right out of the box. I'm going to start my franchise right now. I just need to decide if I'm going to use my recreated VooDoo team or play as another team. If not the VooDoo, I'll probably use Kansas City. The only problem is that EA Sports must've finished the game before KC had a nickname. The team doesn't seem to be referenced as the Brigade anywhere. I'm off to play my first full game of EA SPORTS ARENA FOOTBALL!

My Kansas City team lost the season opener at Dallas, 85-75. I'm playing with 10-minute quarters, but I think I'll drop it to 9. The yardage numbers were actually pretty reasonable, but that score is high even for Arena ball. There were 7 or 8 turnovers in the game, which kept the yardage down and bumped the score up. I may keep it at 10 minutes for my next game against Orlando, but if I get a similar score, I'll lower things.
Jason Shelley is a beast at receiver for Dallas, and none of my defenders could stop him. One of my DS's, Chris Pointer, tried a little too hard to make a diving tackle on Shelley and ended up going over the wall, leading to an easy Dallas touchdown. Just like the real Chris Pointer, I'm afraid.

You make it sound pretty appealing. I think I might need to get to Wal-Mart and check this out for PS2. I think especially since there is franchise mode, it might be worth it. Did you try out the whole "create-a-team" mode?

After you create your team, you get to choose any player in the game to place on your roster. He could be from another AFL team or from the free agent pool. Unfortunately, I don't think it removes the players from other teams if you draft from them. I can't say that for sure in franchise mode, but I know it's the case in regular exhibition mode. As I mentioned in my earlier post, I created last year's VooDoo team and played against Grand Rapids. The New Orleans OS, Aaron Bailey, plays for Grand Rapids now. I put him on my created VooDoo team, and he was on both teams during the game. That was a little bit strange. Maybe it doesn't do that in season mode, but I haven't tried it. One thing that I wanted to mention is that the presentation in the game leaves a lot to be desired. There's no commentary, and the PA announcer seems to be the same guy from NCAA Football. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it all just sounds a little bland. Also, music tracks play throughout the game, which isn't really unheard of in the AFL. Unlike hockey, for instance, the music doesn't necessarily stop while the game is going on. You get to have around 20 tracks or so which will randomly play throughout the game, and XBox users can pick tracks from their XBox's hard drive. While I expect more polished presentation from NCAA and Madden, I'm willing to let it slide on Arena Football for this year. I'm just glad that the game has good gameplay. It moves fast, but that's the point. Arena Football is SUPPOSED to be a fast game. You pretty much need to know who you're throwing to before the snap. Running the football seems to be difficult but not impossible. I'm averaging somewhere around 1.5 yards per carry which isn't bad for the AFL. I like to run the ball a lot, even though my fullback kinda sucks. I may need to find a replacement or at least a backup. Finally, I've decided not to play Game 2 with 10-minute quarters. I'm going to drop it to 8 minutes and just move a little more quickly. There aren't a ton of plays to choose from, and I have a pretty good idea of which one I want to call very quickly. I see no need to just let the play clock run down except when I really need my players to rest (remember, it's Ironman football, and there are strict substitution rules). I'll get by. We'll see how I do against Orlando, but I doubt that I'll play that game tonight. That's for the weekend.

I purchased it for PS2 today. It's...not bad. I have to say that they really did skimp out a lot on stuff that you sort wished they'd taken more time with and so, that's really sad.
But that said, I think it'll be entertaining enough, especially since you can play more than one season now. I like that you can create a team and that you can enter it into franchise mode. It is certainly a fast-paced game and that makes it cool. Surely cooler than say, NFL Blitz or whatever. But we'll see if it has staying power over the months on my PS2. I've been in a March Madness mood like none other of late.

The playbook isn't even that much of a complaint for me. Really, there are only so many formations you can do in the AFL, and the game does let you control a receiver if you want to, so you can improvise on the route-running. I'm looking forward to taking out the hated Orlando Predators. I'm about to start the game up right now!

My game against Orlando went down to the wire, but I got the win.
I am back on XBox Live, and I just played a couple of games. This game is really fun online. Using Kansas City, I defeated a tough Colorado team 55-52. The guy playing as the Crush had a chance to tie the game with about a 30-yard field goal with time running out, but he missed it wide left. I then played against a guy whose online record was 12-0, all of his games being played as the Nashville Kats (!). He jumped out to a quick 21-0 lead on me in the first quarter. I thought I was going to get stomped. I realized that he was just very good at rushing the quarterback, though, so I used some screen passes and quick hook patterns to move the football. He finally backed off and it allowed me to use the deep ball. I cut the score to 21-14 at halftime. Unfortunately, my offense sputtered in the third quarter, and I completely blew a defensive assignment on one play to allow him to stretch his lead. Fast forward to the fourth quarter, about 2:30 to go. I'm down 37-21, and he's got third down at my 10. I'm controlling the jack linebacker, and I see the QB drop back to pass. I am so sure that he's about to leave the pocket, so I start moving toward the sideline. I step one foot outside the box, and I see the QB stop, still in the pocket. Ruh-roh. He gladly takes the sack because I get called for illegal defense. Automatic first down. He scores on the next play, makes a two-point conversion for a 45-21 lead. I get a late score, but it's not nearly enough. I lose 45-29. It was still a hell of a game, and if I could have just figured him out in the first quarter or held him on that drive with the illegal defense, I could have stayed in the game. I want to play another game, but it's getting late. I'll probably get two or three more online games in tomorrow. I love this stuff.
