Would You Ever Use Steroids?
With all of this BALCO, congress, Dick Pound stuff going on I can't read about an athlete recovering much quicker than expected, a toiling backup or minor leaguer becoming an overnight sensation or witness any great athletic feat without wondering, is it real or are they using something? There are some people who say if it makes the game more entertaining, so what? Well I think it sends a terrible message, if you want to get ahead you have to cheat. You could say the same is true in many aspects of life/business but I think sports was supposed to be an escape from that kind of world.

I have used steroids, legally and with a prescription. I would not use them illegally. I would not break the law to advance my career.

Only thing I'd ever use a steroid for is injury recovery, and even then only if I had a prescription for it.

I have always been curious. Not sure if I could pull the punch on doing it, I know I have an addictive nature to me, so once I got going and liked the results then itmight be too hard to stop, and it's not something I would want to do long term.
Plus, I have no real reason to do it except to add muscle, which I will continue to do the slower natural way I guess.

As much crap as I get tested for with my job, I think truck drivers on steroids is even ok. Although 'roid rage behind the wheel would be a bad thing.

People saying they'd never do so can feel confident in their response as they have no real clue what its like to be a professional athlete.
Note: neither do I, but having recovered from a destroyed knee through the use of steroids and a year of agonizing rehab I can safely say it wouldn't take much to get me to use them given the chance. |

I've used them. Pretty much everyone on my football team did thanks to the coaches.

Most of my team was smoking weed. The coaches didn't help with that one though.

I'm pretty much a pessimist and a paranoid person, so no, I'd never do them.

When I played sports in high school, I didn't even work out enough to stay in shape, so I can't see myself having used steroids. Then again, I guess that's why I'm not a pro athlete..

Well, I found out from the doctor the other day that i'm probably not gonna be able to really get back to the gym for about 6 months. And even when I can start it up again its gonna be real small so I can rebuild the muscle mass that has already been lost. Since my accident I have lost about 30lbs, going from 170 to around 140 now and i'm assuming that is gonna keep on going down although it has seemed to level off as of late. Anyhow, since all of this has happened I have now seriously given some thought to using them when I can go back to the gym to put the 30+lbs back on and as soon as that happens just try to maintain it from there. I've been told it usually doesnt work like that, that once you stop you will probably lose most of what they did for you, but with my logic I will just be putting the mass I have lost back on and be back to my normal self. I never thought I would give steroids a thought but its quite the dilemma (sp?) for me.

I put Never, but I don't know if I am qualified to answer. I'm not sure too many of us have any idea what kinds of pressures comes from being a pro athlete, where the rewards are so high, even for the "average" athlete in any game.

That's a good point, but really what the question actually says is "would you be willing to break the law to advance in your profession?" If you're in an environment where everybody else is, in fact, breaking the law, you might say yes. |

I have used RipFuel and Creatine. I am not sure if you classify those as steriods.
I would not use any of the serious stuff that requires a needle.

I don't care what pressures there are. If I'm not good enough to do it on my own, I'll do something else. No way I would ever do it and that's not a qualified no, it's a no.

While they may not know what it is like to be a professional athlete, they almost certainly have had opportunities in their professional careers to bend/break the rules to advance their careers. You don't always have to be put in the exact situation to know which direction your moral compass lies. |

This is correct. I have had many oppurtunities to bend the rules in my job to get ahead and declined them each time. I simply will not do that. |

You see, this is what I mean. While you may have had opportunities to boost your career you've had nothing that compares to what steroids can do for an athlete. For example: Let's say you're a cubicle jockey for an international computer firm, one of the big ones, the size of IBM or MICROSOFT. nice job, good benefits, nice life right? same ol same old every day. One day, something comes along that would make you one of the top 2 or 3 people in the entire company. Still turning down that chance? I don't bet on those odds. But you've never had that experience, so you really can't know how you would react. Steroids can turn an also-ran player in any sport into an all time stud, there is nothing in standard daily life that even minorly corroborates with that experience. No-one outside those involved in the sports world who are given the opportunity to try these drugs can really say how they would react. I applaud your real life ethics, but to compare what you've experienced to what those guys have just doesn't work. |

You'll be surprised by how quickly you will gain back that muscle once you start back up. When I couldn't even walk on my own two legs for four months, I lost 23 lbs in muscle that I built up. Once I was cleared to return to lifting, I gained 18 lbs back in just 2 months. The gains were slow at first, but they took off after 4 weeks. Six months later, I looked like I did before I was crippled.

dola
And I've been cleared to lift again back in May following my neck surgery last year, but I just haven't had the time to start back up yet. Once my summer semester comes to an end, I will be going back to the gym. I'm quite a bit softer now than I was the first time I had to take an extended break, but I have confidence that I can get back to form in a relatively short time (9-12 months).
