Cold Remedies Wanted

I went to Hot Springs, AR for the therapuetic waters and such and came back with the plague. Nah, it's not the plague, I guess I just have a wicked cold. Flying yesterday with it sucked, I still don't think my ears are quite equalized properly. Skipped work today while dosed up on NyQuil, but I plan to go in tomorrow. Anybody have any remedies other than OJ and DayQuil I should try to feel remotely human?

Hot Springs was...interesting. Pics coming soon.

My Dad lives in Hot Springs. It sucks.

It actually used to be fairly nice... Now it is just T-Shirt and Old Timey photo hell.

I do quite a bit of traveling and I like to use a product called Airborne.

One before a flight and after a flight usually helps prevent a nasty cold. If I take a couple a day when I feel a cold coming on, it usually goes away a little faster.

Hot Springs strikes me as a town really searching for its identity. Actually, Little Rock and Hot Springs both struck me that way. It seemed to me while I was there that both were trying way too hard to capitalize on tourism without a lot to offer, and were using heavy influences from TX, LA, and OH to fill in the numerous gaps.

Anyway, pics are up at http://www.flickr.com/photos/terpkri...7594322197870/ if you're interested in seeing what went down. I'll look into that Airborne drug. Thanks for the info, and keep info coming.

Pretty cool pix TK.

When I catch a nasty cold, I sleep it off, no medicine. Maybe drink some hot cider/tea with lemon and honey. There are times when medicine actually makes my cold worse, so I try to go natural as much as possible.

tk, for rough congestion, I take non-drowsy 12 Hour Sudafed. I've found it's about the only one that does not knock me out, yet really relieves the pressure made in the sinuses by the congestion.

Otherwise, nothing else other than rest and drinking a lot will make it go away

Airborne is good stuff. Whenever I have a cold or feel one coming on it always seems to help.

anything that tastes really bad generally works really well for me.

Alka seltzer has a honey flavor out now generally that and a breathright and I'm all better in the morning

I'll look for articles because I know you're the kind of guy that wants to see the proof, but... I've head several reputable reports that there are studies that show that Airborne does absolutely nothing.

I always use chicken soup. I can't say whether it actually does any good, but since it's (usually) homemade, it's pretty good for me anyway.

There are scientific articles that show that most of these products don't work. Antivirals are the only thing that help slightly. However, the power of the mind/placebo effect is a wonderful thing.

I remember reading an article in my local paper some years back that suggested chicken soup has some nutritional elements that bolster the immune system.

The Dr. has spoken, now I don't need to worry about digging up articles ...

But, good point.. this stuff, coldeeze, etc. are really relying more on the placebo effect than anything else.

I can't think of any other change in my diet or lifestyle that would have impacted it, but it could have been a fluke. I'll have to watch this year and see if the pattern repeats itself.

If it works for you, for whatever reason, more power to you. I just, for whatever reason, see you as the kind of guy (like me) that would believe heavily in this kind of claim needing "proof" to really hold true. Now for you, right now, there is proof so that's cool..

Anyway, like i said, if it works for you, good on ya... I fortunately tend to have a pretty strong immune system so I just avoid all of that stuff...

I am a guy that usually requires a lot of proof. This was recommended to me by a coworker and seemed to work, but the article certainly makes me think a bit. I'm not sure my personal experience is enough proof yet.

Will I keep taking it? Yeah, because it's worked for me so far. But this certainly makes me think.

I wish I had a strong immune system. I've fought chronic fatigue, anemia, and low blood volume throughout my life. I am very sensitive to medications as well. (when I was a kid I had really small seizures and the docs gave me Tegretal, I had an allergic reaction to it that nearly killed me)

The docs tell me some people get a stronger immune system as they get older and some people get worse. I hope it's the former in my case.

Well, if nothing else, it seems that there's no HARM in using it.

Joan Rivers once explained to me what her father (who was a doctor) told her about colds...

If you do nothing, it will last about a week.

However, if you take medications to make it better it will only last about seven days!

Wow, all the responses I get after I passed out last night and while I was at work today. I've been doing NyQuil at night and DayQuil during the day. I'm not sure it really helped, but I'm also chugging fluids (tea and water mostly), and I'm feeling slightly human now. Still getting hot and cold though.

I'm blaming my getting sick on the 2 flights down from B'more to Little Rock, and then I was sick Monday flying back, so I probably gave it to everybody on my 2 flights coming back. Airplanes are so good for infesting germies.

Placebo or not, Coldeeze has worked very well for me. Just take it at the first sign of a cold, and it either avoids the cold entirely or greatly lessens its duration and severity.
