Talking Reference to C.P.T. lands city council member in hot water..

Talk about your dumb moves...

Quote:
Phone call to radio station lands Engelman in hot water

Tuesday, October 17, 2006

BY DIETTE COURRÉGÉ

A racially derogatory comment from Charleston County school board member Sandi Engelman about the superintendent on a morning talk show Tuesday spurred mostly backlash and little sympathy from the community.
Listen to the comment
Engelman called in to The Morning Buzz with Richard Todd on 1250 AM WTMA to respond to people criticizing what she and her husband were charging the district in travel expenses.
At the end of the nine-minute phone call, Engelman made an allegation about the superintendent, who is black, over-charging the district for a flight because she was late and on "colored people's time."
"Let me tell you one quick thing before you go," she said. "It's also, from the flight to Chicago, the superintendent was on her usual 'CPT,' missed her flight, came in and booked a first-class flight for hubby, daughter and herself."
Superintendent Maria Goodloe-Johnson and School Board Chairwoman Nancy Cook planned to respond to the comment later Tuesday, but district officials initially denied the claim made by Engelman.
Engelman is up for re-election and faces three challengers for the West Ashley seat on the county school board in the Nov. 7 race.

They had Engelman on the local news tonight. She made a pitiful attempt to wiggle out of it by saying, "Well, I've come to learn that apparently in the black community, c.p.t. means 'colored people time'. To me, it means 'certain people time,' meaning that certain people think they're too important to be on time for anything."

A video interview with her can be found here. It's worth watching.

SD, is that a common euphemism that I've missed? I can't say that I've ever heard CPT period, colored, certain, or otherwise.

Wow, you've never heard that one??? That's borderline shocking. I've heard it basically all my life, from both blacks and whites. I've never heard it mean anything other than colored people time, until today's story.

You have to have spent a good bit of time around black people (not assimilated ones, either) to have heard that term. That's why it surprised me that JiMGA hasn't heard it. It's like HNIC--definitely something we'd use around white people, but only after establishing a certain level of comfort with them.

Now see, HNIC is one I know, heard that one at least as far back as high school (oddly enough, used to describe an extremely white basketball coach).

But darned if I ever heard CPT before (or if I did, it completely sailed over my head & didn't register).

And yes, HNIC is a term I heard before FOFC.

Yep, that's me

I've been wondering, I really don't think "JonInNortheastGA" has the same ring to it. I've been pondering an eventual name change (if we ever get rid of the contractors here & get the house sold down there so we can finish moving) to "Behind Enemy Lines".

Probably not the sort of thing you'd hear in army circles. (My father retired before I was born...) It definitely was more of a 'hood type thing, at least where I grew up.

Did y'all watch the video?

When I lived in MS it was BPT. Quite common for blacks and whites to use the term.

I'd never heard of C.P.T. until today, and I'd never heard of H.N.I.C. until I did an acronym search a few months ago.

Of course, that's probably pretty understandable considering where I'm living.

I've heard of HNIC, but only from the movie Lean On Me.

Oddly enough, I've heard the phrase "Indian time" which is used in similiar ways it sounds like as CPT, only in and around Native American communities. But I've never heard of CPT before....

For those that have never heard of it, watch the video. A brutha interviews her, and a dozen or so callers sure know what it means.

I've never heard CPT or HNIC, but I thought the Urban Dictionary top definition was pretty funny:

Quote:
1. HNIC
133 up, 6 down

acronym for Head Nigga In Charge

Contrary to public opinion,

*slams fist on table*

IM TEH HEAD NIGGA IN CHARGE!!!!

Ice Cube says CPT in the song Chin Check from the Next Friday soundtrack, but I always thought it stood for Compton.

My favorite part of the video is where the News guy says, "Before you get out of here..."

I love it when Journalists are trying their damnedest to appear impartial when they know and the audience knows the person their interviewing is full of it. It's great how he breaks down in the end.

I'm surprised. I heard it quite a bit in New Orleans. I had never heard the term before I moved from NJ to New Orleans. Of course, it could have been a function of working in a civil service job. It was mostly black co-workers that I heard using the term.

Indians in particular are familiar with I.S.T - Indian Standard Time. Basic rule means that if a dinner is as 7:30, showing up before 8:45 is bordeline rude, and at 7:30 itself is just nuts. So yeah, I can relate.
