Any impressions on Vista?
My main concern right now is compatiability and driver support, not really looking for the headache of a perfectly fine system go wildly unstable after an OS upgrade.
So has anyone run into much trouble with it? Seem like it's worth the upgrade right now? and, how long would you suggest waiting if not? |

I bought a laptop last night with it. It's definitely different to work with than XP. As far as driver concerns, etc, obviously I can't answer those since mine wasn't an upgrade. |

I've been running it for a while, but you are correct; driver support is not optimal. For example I have 2 NVIDIA 7900 cards configured in SLI mode but the current Vista drivers do not support SLI mode yet. Also, I have a Soundblaster X-FI card, and while it seems ok I am forced to use a beta driver.
That said, I can't imagine going back at this point, it is really slick. |

Make sure you have a lot of RAM before upgrading to Vista

I've been running it on my work laptop for a couple months now. It's pretty nice, but if I had to pay for it, I'd be waiting.
As for driver issues, I've had some minor annoyances (like my current display driver lets me extend my desktop to a second monitor, but won't let me make that external display the main display so that my taskbar appears there), but nothing major. I can play World of Warcraft, and use all my basic apps (Office 2007 is pretty sweet). I do have a VPC running WinXP for development though, as I don't trust Vista enough to risk losing any productivity to something stupid.

I like it a lot better than XP. Still undecided on Vista vs. OS X though. Driver support is a pain in the ass and probably will be through June. I went through a week of hell dealing with blue screens before getting all my drivers in order and even then not everything works.

Have it on my work PC. No doubt it's a better OS. However I don't think it's good enough to justify throwing time and money into upgrading you system.
I'd wait until you buy another computer or until you have another reason to wipe your OS. I would NOT do an upgrade, that's what I did and I ran into all kinds of problems, not surprisingly. I don't plan on putting it on my main system until at least summer. I'd rather hold out for SP1, which isn't coming out until Novemberish. Last edited by jeff061 : 02-10-2007 at 11:17 AM. |

Absolutely love it. Some problems with drivers (nVidia are a bunch of morons) , but nothing too horrible. The interface (Aero Glass) is incredibly slick as stated and really looks nice. A lot under the hood as well. I've used the new search a few times, and I really think it'll save a ton of time. The new photo gallary is also nice. The quick shut down and start up are very nice indeed.
The constant admin questions (do you want to run 'x') is a bit annoying but not horrible. Once all the new drivers are released, it'll probably be very nice for gaming.

Well, the feedback I've gotten from the horse's mouth is that it's a resource hog and, especially when combined with Office 2007, will bring your laptop to its knees. They upgraded laptops to 2 gb RAM as part of the internal release. Since I've only got 512 MB, I've resisted the urge to install it.
Not enough features to justify an upgrade from what I've seen, unless you have a top of the line system. |

1GB is fine. But yeah, you'll regret it at 512.
