Columbus Sports Weekly - A EHM/FOF/OOTP/BBCF Dynasty

Columbus Sports Weekly – Introduction

I have been trying to come up with an interesting dynasty for a while now, and instead of picking one game to go with, I have decided to go with four. To start off, I will only be talking about the Columbus Blue Jackets (using EHM: 07) starting in October ’06. In the spring of ’07, I will introduce you to the Columbus Rippers (using OOTP 2006), a baseball team in the Premier League that was introduce in 1980. After that, I plan on talking about the Ohio State Buckeyes (using BBCF) and introducing them in the fall of ’07. In the future, I will introduce a NFL team to the capital city of Ohio.

The style of this dynasty will be as a local newspaper that comes out every Monday (roughly, since some games do not have the specific days that go with each game, such as BBCF having Week 1, 2, ect..) For each team, there will be one article every week during the season and one article a month during the offseason. Also, there will be a preseason and postseason special newspaper for each team. For example, the Jackets will get a preseason special edition, then one article a week from October to April (or May if they make the playoffs), then a postseason wrapup special edition, then one article in June, July, August and September.

The NHL and NFL will consist of real players, whereas the PL and the NCAA will consist of generated players, although I will try out the converter for BBCF to FOF so that the Buckeyes could stay in state in the future.

Columbus Sports Weekly – CBJ Preview

New Coach Has the Jackets Thinking Playoffs

Coming off of a disappointing campaign after the lockout, the Jackets made a few changes. In late July, there were some disagreements between John McConnell, the owner, and Coach Gerard Gallant and GM Doug MacLean were shipped out. The ownership opened their pockets and former Flyers/Stars Coach Ken Hitchcock was brought in to be the coach/GM.

He didn’t have much time to mess with the roster or the staff, but he made a couple of tweaks. Anson Carter was brought in for some insurance on the right wing, and just a couple days into camp, it was rumored that Hitch and defenseman Bryan Berard got into a shouting match, and Berard was sent home. The next day, he was shipped out to Pittsburgh for a 3rd round pick in the 2007 Draft. Watching the rest of the camp, the guys noticed that Hitch was all business. The team finished 5-1 in the preseason, playing with intensity that the Jackets fans had never seen.

With that in mind, here are some thoughts on the current roster:

As LW Rick Nash goes, so go the Blue Jackets. The team will rely on Nash, C Sergei Fedorov and RW David Vyborny as their top line. I’m not sold on Fedorov at 6 million dollars and 36 years of age, but if he can stay healthy, he might have a chance at 50 points. The second line is a tossup, but it is likely that newly acquired LW Fredrik Modin will be a lock. Modin scored 31 goals last season for Tampa Bay, so the Jackets hope that he will be an excellent secondary scorer. On the RW is likely to be the enigmatic Nikolai Zherdev. His style seems very different from the coaching style of Hitchcock, but if he can find his way, he can be the key to the first playoff run. However, the lack of a solid 2nd line center will hurt this team. Second year C Gilbert Brule might be the best option, but he is very raw and is lacking in the defensive end. Alexander Svitov is back from Russia and is more suited to play the defensive style, but has always played under his potential. The third line of Jason Chimera-Manny Malhotra-Anson Carter should be a nice hard working line, leaving a 4th line coming from Dan Fritsche, Jody Shelley, Jaroslav Balastik, and the other of Brule/Svitov.

While Adam Foote might have lost a few steps, as evidenced by his -16 last season, he will still be the defenseman that Hitchcock will rely on. Rostislav Klesla, the Jackets first ever draft pick in 2000, started to have that breakout season last year, and will likely pair with Foote on the first line. However, from there, it will be interesting to see how it shakes out, as the lack of some stud defensemen really hurt the team. Ron Hainsey and Duvie Westcott will likely form the second pair, but Hainsey is very unreliable on the defensive end and Westcott is very inconsistent. The final spots will come from veteran Anders Eriksson, back for a second tour of duty in Columbus and youngsters Aaron Johnson and Ole-Kristian Tollefsen.

The goalies aren’t the most NHL ready of the bunch, but they could be most likely to surprise. Pascal Leclaire hasn’t played a full season in the NHL, but has shown some bright spots as a young goaltender. At 31, Fredrik Norrena came to Columbus in the trade for Modin and while Norrena has played very well internationally, we shall see how well his game will translate into the NHL.

Overall, this team should be well coached, as they have the best coach they have had since the beginning. However, the talent on this team is really young or really old and isn’t well tested. I don’t see them making the playoffs, but I do see them making progress, finishing 10th in the division with about 84 points.

Jackets Start Strong, Take 5 Out of 6 Points

The Columbus Blue Jackets couldn’t have hoped for a better start to their season, defeating the Vancouver Canucks 2-1 in their home opener, then going to Chicago and defeating the Blackhawks 4-2. Alas, the Jackets couldn’t make it 3 in a row, falling to the Phoenix Coyotes 5-4 in overtime.

Against Vancouver, two powerplay goals from Rick Nash and David Vyborny in the second period gave the Jackets a 2-0 lead. Sami Salo scored the lone goal for the Canucks with 5 minutes left in the third period. Pascal Leclaire gets the win in net, stopping 22 out of 23 shots.

In the Chicago game, Rick Nash scores a nice powerplay goal in the first period to give Columbus a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes. Martin Lapointe and Martin Havlat score for Chicago only a couple of minutes apart to put the Blackhawks up 2-1. In the third period, Fredrik Modin scores his first goal for Columbus to tie the game up. With five minutes remaining, David Vyborny gets a nice feed from Nash to give Columbus the lead. Chicago pulled Patrick Lalime, but the Jackets get an empty net goal from Ron Hainsey to win the game 4-2.

The Phoenix game was the most exciting out the bunch. Columbus fell behind early on goals by Derek Morris and Owen Nolan. 20 seconds after the Nolan goal, David Vyborny gets the good guys on the board. The teams ended up tied at 3 after forty minutes with goals from Nikolai Zherdev and Anson Carter, as well as Dave Scatchard for Phoenix. The teams traded powerplay goals early in the 3rd, with Jeremy Roenick giving the Yotes a temporary lead at 4-3, but Adam Foote tied it up at 4. The overtime was all Phoenix, as Mike Comrie scored the winning goal, allowing the Coyotes to win the game 5-4.

Fedorov’s Shootout Goal Gives Jackets 5-4 Victory

The Columbus Blue Jackets just keep on going, winning another tough game against their expansion brethren, the Minnesota Wild, in a thrilling 5-4 shootout at Nationwide Arena. The Jackets started strong in the shootout, getting goals from Fredrik Modin and Rick Nash, but the Wild matched with their final two shooters, Mark Parrish and Marian Gaborik. After misses by both Anson Carter and P.M. Bouchard, Sergei Fedorov netted the game winner as Pascal Leclaire (34 saves on 37 shots) stopped Todd White’s chance.

Dan Fritsche got the Jackets on the board 10 minutes into the game, but Gaborik scored with 20 seconds left to send the teams to their locker rooms tied at one. Modin and Adam Foote scored for Columbus in the 2nd, sandwiched between goals from Pavol Demitra and Branko Radivojevic.

Columbus, now at 3-0-1, will face the Maple Leafs at home on Friday night, then travel to Pittsburgh on Saturday to face the Penguins.

I'll be reading. This is something I've thought of doing as well (playing several sport sims in one "universe" so to speak). I'll be interested to see how this turns out.
