Cruel or Just Unusual

My last name is pronounced "pilot," like the person who flies airplanes.
My brother's wife is expecting a boy. They are right now flirting with naming him Otto.

Totally cruel, or just "unusual"?

Real person I know: Sandy V. Agina (she insists on being called by her middle name, Val (short for Valerie) and her last name is pronounced aggie-na)

I mean, I've been known to joke around and say "I'm on auto-kristin pilot" which is kind of a joke, but a kid having to grow up with the name otto pilot....kids can be so horrible, and this kid is already going to be a bit of an oddball (given my brother and his wife).

If you're the kid, I suppose you don't have much control over that (unless you decide to change it later). What fascinates me are the instances (due to marriage or what not) where adults freely choose this path. For example, when celebrity chef Ming Tsai's wife Polly decided to take her husband's last name. Must be true love, there.

Polly is a real nice lady. I havn't interacted with her quite as much as Ming (who is a real class act and a nice guy), but she seems nice. And their son is adorable.

Seattle Pilot?

Can somebody buy me a clue?

There are indeed a ton of bad names out there, and parents who give their kids horrible names. I just never thought anybody in my family would be of the ilk to give horrible names. It reminds me of a Lewis Black sketch where he talks about how the person who writes the names on the birth certificates should have the right to say "uh no." Like the parents who named the kid ABCDE. Or shithead (pronounced "sheh-tay-uh") or asshole (pronounced "aa-shoal-a").

As I said, this kid is going to have...issues...to begin with. My brother and his wife are hardly what one might consider "normal" (even by my warped standards). Why would they torment him with a name like Otto/Auto?

I never knew that! That's pretty cool (and wouldn't be anywhere near as bad as Otto, or maybe it would be, but for different reasons).

Otto just seems cruel to begin with. I mean how many Ottos are being born each year? The answer is that it doesn't even show up on the NameVoyager anymore, despite the fact that more than 1,110 per million were given that name in the 1880s.

I think I've related this story before. A couple of my friends from Beijing were expecting a child, their first. Their names were Feng and Mei Ling Lee. I suggested they name the kid Real. So when he went to school, and they asked for his name, he'd say 'Real Lee'. And the teacher would ask 'Yes, what is your full name'. I suggested the middle name of Ugh. It was at that point I found out that my friend's wife was very proficient in several martial arts.

And apparently, MLB rules say your logo can't have a baseball in it. Theirs did for all those years they kept it. Oh well. Better than the NFL and NBA where you get fined for having your shirt tucked out.

I think it's kind of a cool name, and would be easily rememberable for possible buisiness dealings when he's older. Nobody is going to forget his name, so it should work out well for him.

Since some years ago we have laws to prevent that in Spain, to protect the kids from parents giving them a "fun" name/surname mix, that ends being not fun at all for the kid. Since then, the government employee who registers the name has the right to refuse it if he thinks it's something that has a fun meaning or sounds like a joke.

There are samples of things done in the past, that sound so fun, but that probably made the kids life so miserable.

Example:

- Girl named "Dolores Fuertes de Barriga" that together in Spanish it means "Strong pain in the stomach".

- Boy named "Macias Pajas" that when pronounced sounds like "Me hacias pajas" that means "You masturbated me". (I know a guy named like this and everybody made fun at him in the school).

There is a book i read in the past only about those kind of names in Spain, the book is so fun, but at same time so sad seeing how some parents can be that irresponsible.

What version? Sportslogos page for the AL has logos for the Red Sox, Twins, Yankees and Rangers that all have baseballs in them. For the NL, the Rockies, Marlins, Dodgers, Brewers, Mets and Giants feature a baseball in one form or another. Unless this is specifically a hat logo...that might be different.
