HBO Boxing After Dark
Wow, that was an incredible fight just now between Miranda and Pavlik on the undercard. That was some of the best boxing I've seen in a long time, with Pavlik totally dominating the fight, and winning on TKO in the 7th. Much better than the fights of a couple of weeks ago on PPV. Hopefully the Spinks-Taylor fight can be just as good.

Jermaine Taylor is fighting like he's never seen a southpaw before.

I missed the undercard.
Taylor-Spinks has been less than impressive. |

Pavlik vs Miranda was as good as advertised, Fight of the Year candidate. I think Pavlik will have real trouble if he gets in the ring with Taylor though. Taylor is much faster and just as big and strong.
I didn't see anything mentioned on the telecast but this was supposed to be Larry Merchant's last telecast on HBO. HBO had declined to renew his contract and Max Kellerman is taking over Merchant's spot. Glad to see Merchant go, should have been replaced years ago. |

Wow, watching that Pavlik/Miranda fight, I forgot how much I enjoyed boxing. Then I watched the Spinks/Taylor fight and remembered why I never pay money to watch boxing. Good grief, what a joke. Thank goodness I get PPV for free.

I do like Max Kellerman, but for some sick reason, I liked Larry Merchant. I'm going to miss the slow camera move to Larry and then hear is often-off-the-mark analogy/diatribe.

The one thing I liked about Larry Merchant was that he wasn't afraid to go into the ring after the fight and come really close to lectureing a fighter on the fight he fought. I remember, but I forgot who he was interviewing, when he just point blank asked a fighter when he was actually going to fight a fighter with a pulse.
I hope Kellerman isn't afraid to just put it bluntly to fighters after fights the way Merchant did. |

Kellerman has been trying to get back in the spotlight ever since he played hard ball with ESPN on Around the Horn (although I think he was better than the current host).

I freakin' LOVE Larry, and I'll miss him, but he was getting to the point where it would take him ten minutes to wheeze out one of his anecdotes, so I guess I can understand HBO cutting him loose.
