Well, the suspension starts at 8 games, now for the appeal. From the report I saw, nobody has ever served more than 8 games for getting caught with cork.

The appeal guarantees that MLB won't lose any revenue from the Cubs lucrative upcoming interleague series with the Yankees... after that, who cares? There's no teeth in this penalty at all.
