Da' Bears Football Timemachine - FOF4 - 1960-1969

This is a dynasty based on FOF4. We will be following the Bears through history starting in the sixties. Hopefully we will win a few more championships.

House Rules:

None really. If I see a problem in the future I will make a house rule.

I will not write a very detailed report for every year. Just a short recap for each year. Right now the salary cap is set at 35 million. I have also started with a preference draft. Welcome to the 60's. GO BEARS!

1960 Chicago Bear Roster

Quaterbacks
At this position it is pretty much set or awhile. Damon Spano is a 53/53 who is idolized by the fans. He can read the defense pretty well 91/91. A short passer type of QB. Both of the back-ups are pretty decent with good potential.

Running Backs
Keith Shell is the starter out of the group of running backs. Most notable of his skills are his break away speed 100/100. The other backs are not that great. Might get a late round RB to improve depth at this position. R.J. Mastney is the starting full back. Good third down runner 85/95 and a decent pass blocker 57/89.

Receivers
At the tight end position we have no talent at all. At the wide out spot we also have no talent. I will have to go on performance to see what players I keep at this position. Good thing is most of the players do not have long term contracts.

Offensive Line
We have some pretty good young and vetran lineman on this team. Bernard Shaw T 4 year veteran 74/79, Pactrick Leisure G 9 year veteran 71/71, Jeff Chapman G 5 year veteran 43/67, and Brandon Roddy T 2 year veteran 38/67. But, there is a problem, the Bears have two really good and grizzled veterans at the center spot. I was hoping to trade one and keep the other to start for a season or two. Overall the offensive line looks pretty good.

Special Teams
My punter and kicker are both very average. Hopefully I can find replacements very soon.

Defensive Line
A very average defensive line. Kenny Peterson is a stand out. He lacks run defense 1/1, just your basic pass rusher specialist. Frank Bergsman is also a pretty decent lineman. He is also a little more well rounded than Peterson as Bergsman has average run stopping skill.

Line Backers
We are very strong at this position. Ernest Fischer is the sack specialists out of the LBs core. Ben Shiel also has some good pass rush ratings and is very well rounded.

Defensive Backs
We are going to need to upgrade this position if we plan to make a title run. Not many core players at this position. High draft choices are goona have to be spent at this position.

Ready for the season to begin and let it be a good one.

Hmm, VERY interesting if you plan to use the "Historical Project" draft files from 1970 and on... hope so!

It had crossed my mind 3ric and maybe I will do it. We still have a whole decade of football before we get there.

The seven game losing streak really killed us to end the season. We were one the worst in the league when it came to points defense. Although I will not be able to give the expanded stats that I wanted to this season, because I simulated a little to far. I will just give a few standout players from our team. Aslo I will give the few outstanding players from around the league.

#18 QB Damon Spano - 60.3% 3303 yds. 16 TD 18 Int 75.3 Rate
#43 RB Keith Shell - 332 att 1213 yds. 3.6 ypc 5 TD 28 rec. 262 yds. 1 TD
#85 WR Larry Knoyle - 53 rec. 749 yds. 1 TD

#97 DT Frank Bergsman - 56 Tckl. 22 Asst. 5.5 sacks
#98 DE Kenny Peterson - 36 Tckl. 20 Asst. 9.0 sacks
#55 LB Tyrone Voncannon - 133 Tckl. 28 Asst. 3.0 sacks 3 Int 1 TD
#22 SS Ma Spector - 83 Tckl. 29 Asst. 3 Int 19 Defn.

Kansas City defeated Tampa Bay in the Superbowl 17-7
Superbowl MVP came from the losing team QB Zach Boucvalt

The MVP is #29 RB Ryan Mohler from St. Louis - 1575 yds. 10 TD 87 rec. 842 yds. 4 TD

Coach of the Year is Stephen Araguz of Kansas City. He coached his team from the wildcard all the way to a superbowl win.

As for Chicago Bears that received league awards, we had two.

All-League Second-String Offensive Guard Patrick Leisure
All-League Second-String Inside Linebacker Tyrone Voncannon

Overall a very dissapointing first season for the Chicago Bears. Hopefully we can give the fans something better to cheer for.

1961 Off-Season

The league signed a new 8-year television deal. The cap will rise 3.7 million every year over the life of the contract.

Staff Evaluation

Marvin Goodwin - Overall he is a very average coach, but he does have good offensive play calling. He is also excellent with offensive lineman. Like any football franchise I cannot fire a coach one year into a contract, unless I am the Redskins.

House Rule #1 I cannot fire a coach unless he has two 10 loss seasons in a row or 3 seasons in a row of losing or .500 football. Of course we can always wait till the contract runs out.

Maurice Cobb - Cobb is acctually a very good scout. I do wory about his health. He has one year left on his contract and he will probaly retire.

Free Agency Period

We were offered an interesting trade from Baltimore. Patrick Leisure for a really good tight end and a 1st round draft pick. I decide to reject the offer even though it was really tempting offer.

There is no one worth signing on my team plus we do not have much cap room. Although I might sign our punter who averaged 42 yds per punt.

There is not much free agent movement this year as no one really has money to sign new players. Its a good thing that our best players have long term contracts.

1961 Draft

The Bears have the #7 pick. We are looking for a wide receiver or a corner back in the first round.

Bears' Draft
Round #1 Mike Compton FS Texas Tech
Round #2 Troy DiCaprio WR UNLV
Round #3 Jason Humphries TE North Carolina St.
Round #4 Toby Jackson P Louisiana St.
Round #5 Ricardo Newhart RB Howard
Round #6 Ron Shelton CB Colorado
Round #7 Sedrick Dunne LB Arizona St.

A very good draft for us. Our first four draft picks should get a decent amount of playing time this year. Newhart was a steal in round number 5 plus he was a fan favorite. Shelton and Dunne are scrubs that are used to fill out the roster.

1961 Bears Roster

Quater Backs
The same guy will be starting, Damon Spano. He has a few new faces to throw to this season. Along with a strong running game I am predicting that Spano will have a great year.

Running Backs
Keith Shell will be the starter again. He probaly will not get as many carries this season, because the rookie Newhart will get a few carries each game.

Receivers
Rookie Jason Humphries will be starting at the tight end position. Looks like he will really help the offense. Rookie DiCaprio will be the starting split end along with Larry Knoyle at the flanker.

Offensive Line
Nothing has really changed here.

Defensive Line
Again no changes.

Line Backers
Fischer, Voncannon, and Shiel return for another great season and may be the best linebacking crew in the league.

Defensive Backs
We are still weak at the corner spot. The tandem of Maa Spector and Mike Compton at the safety spot may be one of the best in the league.

It was another dissapointing season for the Bears. Although Keith Shell did have a great individual season for the Bears. Our offense was just crap this season. Our passing game was the main problem this season. Spano was plagued with nagging injuries all season long and it really showed in his performance. Here we come NFL draft!

#18 QB Damon Spano - 57.7% 2381 yds. 10 TD 8 Int
Spano is no spring chicken next year will be his 17th season. We will need to find a young Qb to develop for the future.
#43 RB Keith Shell - 309 att 1474 yds 4.7 ypc 5 TD
Shell got less carries this season, but his yards per carry weny up more than a yard. Shell is really earning his keep.
#23 FB R.J. Mastny - 87 rec 606 yds 2 TD 181 rush yds 1 TD
Mastny has turned out to be our best receiver, not much of a running back.
#85 WR Larry Knoyle - 51 rec 774 yds 5 TD
#58 OLB Ernest Fischer - 119 Tckl 41 Asst 9.5 Sacks 1 Int
#55 MLB Tyrone Voncannon - 105 Tckl 31 Asst 2.0 Sacks 1 Int
We had more great preformances from our linebacking core. Fischer was another guy that had a great individual season for the Bears.
#47 FS Mike Compton - 84 Tckl 26 Asst 4 Int 1 TD
Mike Compton had a great rookie season. Hopefully he will have many great season to come.

Super Bowl II - Kansas City 21 Green Bay 13
Kansas City's record setting defense carries them to another title. Only allowed 13.5 ppg a new NFL record. I don't see that one being broken anytime soon.

MVP Brian Price RB Kansas City - 1714 yds 7 TD 60 rec 526 yds 4 TD

Coach of the Year - Stephen Araguz
Record setting defense gets him the award.

Outstanding Players from around the League
Larry Kelly DE New Orleans - 23.5 sacks *NFL record
Craig Puckett QB Indianapolis - 4655 yds *NFL record 35 TD 14 Int
Shaun Tharaldson QB Detroit - 33 Int

Team Awards
Defensive Rookie of the Year Mike Compton
All-League First-String Outside Linebacker Ernest Fischer
All-League Second-String Fullback R.J. Mastny

Key Team Stats
Passing Yards 2885 30th in the League
3rd Down Conversion % 31.5 29th in the League
Points Per Game 13.5 30th in the League
Turnovers 20 8th in the League Woot!

The defense is really solid this season. The offense really stunk it up. Although they did not turn it over much. Maybe it was because all we did was run the ball all the time.

Staff Evaluation

Head Scout Maurice Cobb - He has decided not to retire. After that great draft and helping pick DROY Mike Compton. We have decided to give Cobb a three year extension worth $160,000.

Well Head Coach Goodwin will be fired and will be replaced. It's time to find a new head coach!

The Canidates

#1 Rusty Copeland - His contract with Arizona is up this year. Although he may be a little expensive. One of the younger coaches (43) out there with a decent amount of experince. He has made it to the playoffs once with the Arizona. His strong points are his playcalling VG Offensive G Defensive. He is also good with linebackers and secondary players.

#2 Glen O'Shea - His contract with Philly is up this year. His player skills are simply amazing. He also is VG with young talent. Plus his playcalling is on par with Copeland. Not the best motivator and does not demand a lot of discipline.

We offer Glen O'Shea a 1.6 million 4 year deal.

Well we got in a bidding war with Philly and it ended in us giving O'Shea a 4 year 2.4 million dollar deal.

Free Agency Period

Out of the players that were UFA this season we offered 4 contracts. The rest will be released.

Larry Knoyle WR - The second leading reciver on the team. Still relatively young (7 years of experince).

Kenny Peterson DE - Two seasons in a row of 9 or more sacks makes him a big asset to our pass rush.

John Hurst CB - The better of the two starting CB that had their contracts go up this season.

Bobby Ogle SS - Well it was between Ogle and Maa Spector. Ogle is 5 years younger and is getting much better.

Players to be released
Rennie Johnson QB
O.J. Goldsberry C
Ken Barker K
Toby Roffmann DE
Aaron Steen CB
Maa Spector SS
Jeff Amberg FB

All four players are resigned.

We did not go after free agents this season as we did not have alot of money to work with.

1962 Draft

We have a lot of needs this season. A young QB or C. We still need a CB. So many needs, but not enough draft picks.

The QB class this year is very unimpressive. The only decent prospect is Maurice Forrest. He is a pretty big guy, but he needs to be developed.

Bear's Draft
Round #1 Fernando Duncan ILB Washington
Round #2 Herman Gage C UCLA
Round #3 DNP * For some reason we had no pick in the third round.
Round #4 Gerald Burgess K Quachita
Round #5 Vinny Everett DE Georgia
Round #6 Preston Dennis QB Louisiana-Monroe
Round #7 Jonathan Moore OT Purdue

I just could not pass up Duncan. He was such an impressive prospect and should replace Tyrone Voncannon once he retires or contract is up. Herman Gage is still very raw, but after a few years of back-up he should do just fine. Round 4-7 was pretty decent Everett and Moore should see some playing time over the next season. Burgess will be our starting kicker.

Quaterbacks
The same face will be starting this season. The recently drafted Preston Dennis will play back-up.

Running Backs
Shell will continue to get the bulk of carries this season and Newhart will get a decent amount of carries as the back-up. R.J. Mastny will play the fullback position again this season.

Receivers
Knoyle and DiCaprio will be the starting wideouts. With second year man Jason Humphries starting at tight end.

Offensive Line
This line is still strong as ever. The only real surprise here is that rookie center Herman Gage has won the starting spot. This is still a great vetran line and may be one of the best in the league.

Defensive Line
Everything is looking the same. When the draft comes up next year we are gonna need a young defensive tackle.

Linebackers
We are gonna be weak in the middle ay Tyrone Voncannon has decided to retire. Willie Whittington will be the starter and Duncan the rookie will play back-up.

Defensive Backs
Ogle and Compton should make a fine pair at the safety position. Compton's ratings are going threw the roof. Are safeties are gonna be busy this season as we are still really weak at the corner spot.

Another crappy season for the Bears. New Coach O'Shea did not have the debut we had hoped for. O'Shea's former team the Philladelphia eagles were able to make the play-offs and win a wildcard game. The last two games of the season gave us some hope for next season.

#18 QB Damon Spano - 55.7% 2916yds 14TD 14Int
I think it is time for Spano to go. We will need to replace him in the off-season. We have one of the worst passing games in the league.
#43 RB Keith Shell - 319Att 1243yds 3.8Avg 11TD
Another outstanding season for Shell. His 3rd straight season with a thousand yards or more.
#85 WR Larry Knoyle - 60rec 815yds 4TD
#87 WR Troy DiCaprio - 56rec 826yds 2TD
#58 LB Ernest Fischer - 88Tckl 20Asst 9.0Sack 2Int
#46 FS Mike Compton - 85Tckl 35Asst 5Int 2TD
Compton is quickly becoming one of the best in the NFL. The best thing about this is that he has not maximized his potential.
#98 DE Kenny Peterson - 40Tckl 13Asst 10.0Sack
It paid off to re-sign Peterson. More seasons like this Peterson might make his way to the Hall of Fame.

Super Bowl III - Oakland 34 Green Bay 24
SB MVP - Donovan Flees
Oakland had a great balanced offense that really could move the ball. Flees was one of the best QB this year.

MVP - Brad Kozempel
Coach of the Year - Karl Nowokorie

The Best and Worst from around the League
#7 QB Houston Robert Ingersoll - 4274yds 33TD 14Int 86.8Rate
#16 QB NY Jets Chris Hogenkamp - 3352yds 20TD 7Int 91.5Rate
#1 QB Arizona Emmanuel Ross - Sacked 72 times
#7 QB Detroit Shaun Tharaldson - 34Int *Team did make playoffs.

Team Awards
NONE

We are at the bottom in every passing category. Our run defense may be the worst in the league. Our rushing offense is fairly decent. Our pass defense has improved. Offensively our points per game went up about 6 points. We still have a lot of work to do to get this team to the playoffs.
