Groovy Rock - a custom CD

Since we seem to be having a silly-hat day, I'll contribute. For my trip last week, I produced three custom CDs to listen to in the rental car. The first one was a compilation of U2 favorites including several tracks extracted from the R&H DVD (I'll deny that I learned how to do that). The second one was a selection of my favorite tracks from Pink Floyd's p.u.l.s.e CD. Both came out really well. The third one ended up being a mixed bag of some of my favorite rock tunes that I could easily get my hands on from my collection. Here are the CD tracks I choose:

1. Roll Me Away - Bob Seger
2. Hollywood Nights - Bob Seger
3. I Can't Drive 55 - Sammy Hagar
4. Eagles Fly - Sammy Hagar
5. Suite Madame Blue - Styx
6. Come Sail Away - Styx
7. Cat's in the Cradle - Ugly Kid Joe (yes, I do like this cover)
8. The Unforgiven - Metallica
9. Give to Live - Sammy Hagar
10. The Fire Inside - Bob Seger
11. Like A Rock - Bob Seger

Actually, it flows pretty well. Fwiw.

You made a CD and wasted half the space by putting just 11 songs on it?

You should have put the Eric Cartman cover of that song on instead.

It did come out to be about 68 minutes (80 mins max). Besides, the whole process only took about 30 minutes with Sound Stream and a very fast CD writer.

I could handle a road trip with Buccanrhy. Nice mix. Of course, my wife would love the U2 disc.

You can listen to a 30-sec preview of that song on Amazon's page for the Chef Aid CD

I've heard a great live version of "Staring at the Sun," the only saving grace of Pop Mart, and one of my favorites.

I know, SD, I did extract both of those but just didn't have room (I was running 74 mins). But maybe I'll redo it sometime.

I was a sailor, I was lost at sea
I was under the waves
Before love rescued me
I was a fighter, I could turn on a thread
Now I stand accused of the things I've said

Love comes to town I'm gonna jump that train
When love comes to town I'm gonna catch that flame
Maybe I was wrong to ever let you down
But I did what I did before love came to town

I used to make love under a red sunset
I was making promises I was soon to forget
She was pale as the lace of her wedding gown
But I left her standing before love came to town

I ran into a juke joint when I heard a guitar scream
The notes were turning blue, I was dazing in a dream
As the music played I saw my life turn around
That was the day before love came to town

When love comes to town I'm gonna jump that train
When love comes to town I'm gonna catch that flame
Maybe I was wrong to ever let you down
But I did what I did before love came to town

{Repeat Chorus}

I was there when they crucified my Lord
I held the scabbard when the soldier drew his sword
I threw the dice when they pierced his side
But I've seen love conquer the great divide

When love comes to town I'm gonna catch that train
When love comes to town I'm gonna catch that flame
Maybe I was wrong to ever let you down
But I did what I did before love came to town

"But I've seen love conquer the great divide" - that line gets to me every time

I use that song, and focus on that very line, just about every time I speak about the Cross.

I need to get it on DVD. I went to the local Blockbuster and asked for it, and the kid working the desk had never even heard of it.

Bought it for the Mrs. for Christmas. I really would have liked to get Zoo TV for her, but it only came out on laser disc then went out of print.

If you noticed, tracks 5 - 9 of my CD came from one concert from the R&H DVD - the Sun Devil Stadium concert. I would have given anything to have been there (or anywhere for that matter on that tour instead of waiting to see them on the ZooTV tour).

Fritz, if you stick into my right ear, it wouldn't do any damage.

Note to self: Remind me not to share my planned compilation of country/western/bluegrass favorites with Fritz.

Last night I heard one of the funniest CD's I'd ever heard: bluegrass versions of about 20 classic U2 songs.

Is that like those insipid Philharmonic Does Queen (or Pink Floyd) type arrangements?

There's a band called Hayseed Dixie that does bluegrass covers of AC/DC. Funny stuff.

I've never heard those, but it was pretty amazing that they stayed true to bluegrass style, while you still definitely recognized the U2 songs. It was being played over a PA system, and I instantly recognized "Where The Streets Have No Name." They all sounded pretty good. It was just funny to hear the songs presented that way.

My opinion (as if anyone cares):

1. Too much Bob Seger.
2. I like Sammy Hagar - but I would have "Mine All Mine" on here.
3. Ugly Kid Joe? I though you were an old guy...??? You're not supposed to even know who Ugly Kid Joe is... much less appreciate the band... then again, nobody should appreciate Ugly Kid Joe. And, I never liked that song anyway. Either version.
4. I've sworn off Metallica since they helped kill Napster. Besides, all their new stuff sucks.

I don't know, that clip almost makes it sound like a parody. Coming from South Park, I would suspect that.

He tries to sing it "faithfully", with a few "you guys" and other phrases thrown in. Also, Chef turns part of it into the "funky" version. The band (the creators and a few other people) actually play the music pretty well. It's a fun song.

Good road songs, I believe.

2. I like Sammy Hagar - but I would have "Mine All Mine" on here.

On the two Hagar CDs I have, I don't think I have that.

3. Ugly Kid Joe? I though you were an old guy...??? You're not supposed to even know who Ugly Kid Joe is... much less appreciate the band... then again, nobody should appreciate Ugly Kid Joe. And, I never liked that song anyway. Either version.

UKJ has been around a while. Remember, I was into the second-tier alternative bands of the early 90s.

4. I've sworn off Metallica since they helped kill Napster. Besides, all their new stuff sucks.

I just picked my favorite track from the Metallica CD (Enter Sandman was a close second, as well as the One single).

"Mine All Mine" is actually on a Van Halen album... either OU812 or 5150... I can't remember.

Pretty funny stuff, but gets old after a while. Just for fun, some rock station here played a bunch of their stuff a while back.

I'm pretty sure metallica would burn your ass with pyro's if they knew you were copying only certain songs to compilations. I'm pretty sure that is illegal since it is not for archival purposes.

I think I would have swapped in "Against the Wind" and "Sad But True".

For novelty acts, try
The King (click on 'The King's Records' for clips). Imagine Elvis singing "Sweet Home Alabama" or "LA Woman"....

Hmm, I don't know if I would have used those exact words considering the Great White tradgedy....
