2008 White Rock Chili Dogs - Planning Stages
Through an unfortunate confluence of multiplayer city and team nicknames, we are to be known as YOUR White Rock Chili Dogs.
First order of business is to decide what type of team we want to build - and we have a couple of options open to us. 1) Trade, trade, trade until we have the best 53 draft picks we can get. That probably means a fistful of 3rd - 5th rounders. Once we get all of the draftees on the team we can decide what tyoe of team we want to run. I immediately reject this as "ass-boring." That would be boring as in not-fun...not drilling. 2) Combine and deal all of our picks so that we have the best 11 picks we can get...and use them on offense. The alternate would be to do this for defense. Now see - that seems like more fun to me. We'll interview the draft class and try and draft the top QB, FL, SE, and RB. Hopefully we can get a decent o-line later and lean on their cohesion over the next decade as opposed to their..you know...talent. We interview the top 5 prospects at WR, RB and QB. The rest of our interviews will be used on players with grades between 4 and 5. We'll lean heavily on combine numbers and scouting recommendations. Our scout, Bobby Nieves, is rated very good at young talent, good at qb and wr and average at every other position. Seeing this makes me feel a bit better about the direction in which I want to head. Off to interview.

Quarterback Interviews
Peter Briggs (6.3 adj rating) - UNDERRATED Chris Taylor (6.3) - VERY OVERRATED Roy Harrison (6.2) - VERY OVERRATED Myron Mason (6.2) - VERY OVERRATED Seeing a pattern here - we decide to look for some combine guys - Briggs is the clear pick so far - he has superior strength and great SENSE RUSH bars. Bert Mayhem (6.0) - UNDERRATED Ok, I interviewed based mainly on name here. Last one... Malcolm Sweeney (6.2) - VERY OVERRATED Crap. We need more options. I decide to look for the best SENSE RUSH guy I can find. Dan McElroy (5.7) - HARD TO READ Well, it looks to me like Peter Briggs is the clear choice. McElroy or Mayhem might be our backup choices. The rest - hopefully the other teams jump on them.

Wide Receiver Interviews
We decide to interview the seven fastest guys in the draft... Harris Powell (6.6) - VERU OVERRATED That makes me a little sad because he has 4.27 speed and best in class agility (6.73). His bars are ridiculously good. Hmmm. Sammie Newman (6.1) - VERY UNDERRATED Jerry Reeves (5.7) - VERY UNDERRATED Zach Ciscone (5.8) - UNDERRATED We might have more luck targetting these three and forgetting about Powell who will likely go top 10. OJ Heiden (4.8) - AS SCOUTED Daryl Rivera (3.7) - OVERRATED Chad Turnbull (4.2) - HARD TO READ Just for the heck of it we decide to interview the four best adjusted rating WR we haven't talked to yet. In essence, interviewing the best bars guys left. Darrin Caldwell, JC LeCroy, Myron Portilla, Earnest Dunn - VERY OVERRATED Well there is four interviews I'll never get back. We've done enough damage here, I think. The top four wr are completely clear - all have red speed too.

Running Back Interviews
Wow what a crap class. One guy stands out, however. OJ Winters (6.3) - VERY UNDERRATED We look at the other combine guys. Tyrus Torres (6.2) - HARD TO READ Jeff Bangs (5.4) - HARD TO READ Lonnie Staggs (6.0) - AS SCOUTED The top RB according to adjusted rating... Brian McMillian (6.4) - VERY OVERRATED And two more for good measure Gene Wagner (5.4) - HARD TO READ Lewis Eskridge (5.2) - VERY OVERRATED Well I think who we want here is pretty clear. The dropoff is significant.

We have 35 interviews remaining. We'll target guys between 4 and 5 adjusted rating and try to snag standouts in at least one relevant combine area.
We'll use 15 more interviews for offense and the remaining 20 for defense. Guards Vinny Malone (4.9) - VERY UNDERRATED Peter Coleman (4.9) - HARD TO READ Archie Tchaikovski (4.7) - HARD TO READ Lance Ramos (4.6) - AS SCOUTED Jake Seigniuous (4.5) - VERY UNDERRATED Ellis Murphy (4.4) - VERY OVERRATED Pretty good returns from that group - although I think you can generally get starters at the point where I may be taking these guys. Tackle Ike Prescott (4.8) - AS SCOUTED Ken Darden (4.8) - AS SCOUTED Preston Kohl (5.8) - AS SCOUTED (mis-click ftw) Clyde Powell (4.7) - UNDERRATED Riddick Snell (4.5) - VERY OVERRATED Alonzo Poole (4.9) - HARD TO READ Wow - what a crap group. :\ Center/Fullback/Tight End C Rod McKenzie (4.6) - VERY OVERRATED C Harvey Halama - (4.2) - VERY OVERRATED Ok - enough with the effing centers. FB Darren Floyd (4.2) - HARD TO READ TE Jerald Granger (4.5) - HARD TO READ Well hopefully we get the QB-RB-WR-WR quadfecta because there doesn't look to be much help coming from elsewhere.

Defensive Interviews
We want the best secondary we can get. So we will spend most of our interviews on cb. 13 interviews and we get a mishmosh of shit. One VERY UNDERRATED. Okay then...we finish the rest of our interviews and get more of the same. Hey who gives a shit? The best defense is a kickass offense.

The Draft
Okay, there are going to be lots of trades. Our plan is to trade down a few spots and then pick QB Peter Briggs (if he doesnt get selected - if he does we'll start scooping up WR). First Trade We send 1.1 2010 1 Oak sends 1.2 2009 1 2010 1 W00T! Now we're talking. 1. Oakland - QB Roy Harrison - YAY! Of course San Fran and Atlanta won't give us anything remotely approaching the Oakland deal - and since we don't want to risk missing out on Briggs we go ahead and select him at 1.2. 2. White Rock - QB Peter Briggs I think we are focusing on the RB and the three WR below Powell now - so we should be able to sit tight for at least a few picks and wait for Powell to get snatched up before we trade back in. Here are the rest of the top 10 picks. 3. San Francisco - Mason, Myron, QB, East Carolina 4. Atlanta - Sweeney, Malcolm, QB, Florida State 5. Oakland - Bushon, Kelvin, OLB, Vanderbilt 6. Pittsburgh - Clemons, Bryan, T, Albany 7. Indianapolis - Taylor, Chris, QB, Mississippi State 8. New Jersey P - Anderson, Kendall, S, Purdue 9. Washington - Delgado, Bernard, CB, Indiana 10. Jupiter - Kieta, Darren, ILB, Michigan Now we start thinking about trading back in. 11. Detroit - Lyons, Norbert, OLB, Texas Tech 12. Arizona - Powell, Harris, WR, Nebraska And that cinches it since Powell is now off the board and our WR are vulnerable. Detroit, Atlanta and Cincy are the only teams that mention a need for WR - so we decide to sit until pick 20 before trying to trade back in. 13. Tennessee - O'Field, Steve, G, Fresno State 14. Jacksonville - Chevrier, Wes, TE, Fresno State 15. Green Bay - Kolsrud, Shane, ILB, Clemson 16. Washington - Granados, Bo, CB, St. Francis, Pa. 17. Denver - Danek, Marcus, DT, Maryland 18. Lackawanna - Hamill, Leland, OLB, Drake 19. New Orleans - Yoo, Jack, QB, Miami, Florida 20. Fall River - McGregor, Kim, QB, Penn State Philly needs a QB, so we let them pick. 21. Philadelphia - Mayhem, Bert, QB, Appalachian State Phew. RB OJ Winters and WR Sammie Newman are now 4th and 8th best available on Kiper's board. The Cincy Whitecaps are up and they need a WR. We need to move here. Second Trade We send 2009 and 2010 seconds CIN sends 1.22 22. White Rock - Newman, Sammie, WR, North Carolina With our two WR still on the board, as well as our RB we decide to sit tight until one of the WR goes. Everyone needs QB still and the bars RB is still ranked higher than our guy. Once the bars RB or one of our WR goes, then we move. 23. Keene - Erickson, Shaun, QB, Oklahoma State 24. Tampa Bay - Laing, Tim, DT, Wisconsin 25. Houston - Carlson, Mario, DT, Pittsburgh 26. Charleston - Ciscone, Zach, WR, Arkansas That didn't take long.

The Cleveland Single Decks pick at 1.28 and they need QB, DT, QB. Lots of those available - so we let them pick.
27. Cleveland - Johnston, Harris, DT, Oklahoma State They don't disappoint so we look at the rest of the teams that pick before we are up at 2.2. Our RB is now the 2nd best available listed (albeit behind the top RB on the board - a bit of a safety cushion, perhaps.) None of the next three teams SAY they need a WR or a RB. Kansas City, San Diego or Carolina. However the team at 1.31 - Calverton - has WR listed as their 3rd need. We decide not to risk and try and trade in now - before someone either changes their mind or trades out. Trade #3 We send 2008 2.1 2010 3rd rounder Kansas City Axmen send 2008 1.28 So with our new pick in hand we select: 28. White Rock - Reeves, Jerry, WR, Boston College Now I am officially stoked. We have our QB and two starting stud wideouts. Now we move our attention to RB. We still have the following picks: 2008 3-7 2009 1, 3-7 2009 OAK 1 2010 4-7 2010 OAK 1 Our plan is to wait until the top RB goes off the board (I seriously doubt our guy goes first) and then we trade in. 29. Carolina - McMillian, Bryan, RB, Southern California We don't, uh, wait long.

Trade #4
We send a mishmosh of shit. 2008 3,4 2009 3 2010 4 San Diego sends 1.30 We pick. 30. White Rock - Winters, O.J., RB, Idaho Hooray! We now have our weapons in place - even better, we have 3 first rounders to go with our 10 other late picks. The plan now will be to convert those picks into as many picks as possible. I'll spare the gory details and get to trading and let you know with what I end up. 31. Calverton - Torres, Tyrus, RB, Kentucky 32. South Carolina - Staggs, Lonnie, RB, Mississippi Well good thing we acted on Winters. We wheel and deal and now have 27 picks...all in this draft. Four 3rds, five 4ths, six 5ths, six 6ths, six 7ths. I run the draft to 3.2 (our next pick). 33. Oakland - Balogh, Kennedy, RB, Georgia 34. Kansas City - Logan, Cornell, OLB, Oregon 35. San Francisco - Dole, Kelly, DE, Washington State 36. Atlanta - Raymond, Lance, S, Louisville 37. Indianapolis - Turnbull, Raymond, OLB, Oklahoma State 38. San Francisco - Esquivel, Perry, RB, Mississippi 39. Indianapolis - Caldwell, Darrin, WR, Duke 40. Washington - Dotson, Darryl, T, Tulane 41. Jupiter - Whalen, Nicky, FB, West Virginia 42. Detroit - Erickson, Lionel, CB, Kansas 43. Buffalo - Whalen, Allen, DE, Murray State 44. Tennessee - Givens, Carlton, DE, Miss. Valley St. 45. New Jersey P - Benton, Todd, CB, Western Michigan 46. Green Bay - Furrey, Christian, T, Tennessee 47. Jacksonville - Blake, Preston, G, Oregon State 48. Denver - Mahoney, Heath, ILB, Nevada - Las Vegas 49. Lackawanna - Heuring, Jorge, ILB, Indiana 50. New Orleans - Newsome, Lenny, T, Colorado 51. Fall River - Heath, Earl, FB, Ohio 52. Philadelphia - Browning, William, CB, Notre Dame 53. New Jersey M - Ready, Andrew, S, Duke 54. Washington - LeCroy, J.C., WR, North Carolina State 55. Tampa Bay - Portilla, Myron, WR, Oregon State 56. Houston - Caldwell, William, DE, Tennessee Tech 57. Charleston - Dunn, Ernest, WR, Northwestern 58. Cincinnati - Hines, Marcus, S, Wyoming 59. Cleveland - Speers, Wendell, RB, Virginia 60. Carolina - Hauser, Marcus, G, Wayne State (Neb.) 61. Kansas City - Wagner, Gene, RB, Syracuse 62. San Diego - Hernandez, Horace, DT, Virginia Tech 63. Calverton - Lindsay, Ted, S, Wisconsin 64. South Carolina - Schmidgall, Vince, DE, Alabama 65. San Diego - Carr, Sammie, DT, Wake Forest Honestly didn't miss much. We'll concentrate next on adding some more picks and building an o-line.

We own 2, 3, 5, 7 in the third round. I take a look at our interview sheet for the offensive line and see there are still 14 guys left - of the 14 we interviewed. We decide to try and trade down into the middle of the round and pick up some extra day 2 picks (you know, for the defense, yo!)
We trade down to picks 13, 14, 15, 15 and pick up two more 4ths, and one more pick each in rounds 5-7. We now have 32 picks. 66. Green Bay - Witt, Matthew, G, Georgia Tech 67. Lackawanna - Bangs, Jeff, RB, West Virginia 68. Atlanta - Ramon, Robbie, CB, West Virginia 69. Jacksonville - Hines, Deion, OLB, Jacksonville State 70. Pittsburgh - Mason, Lionel, CB, Southern Utah 71. New Jersey M - Schelling, Mitchell, WR, Army 72. Jupiter - Thomason, Cornell, RB, South Dakota 73. Detroit - Dotson, Dennis, T, Illinois 74. Arizona - Manderville, Kim, RB, UCLA 75. Tennessee - Newhart, Mike, DT, Northwestern 76. New Jersey P - Patchet, Orlando, C, Nevada - Las Vegas We are now mid round 3 and there are still a ton of 5.0+ players on the board. We actually don't see much that we like, so we trade down even more and pick up some more picks. Yes, this is minutae for the reader - my apologies. Anyway...let's see who gets picked, then we'll review our stable of picks and then we resolve to pick SOMEONE. 77. Charleston - Schacht, Les, TE, Iowa 78. Cincinnati - Bernstein, Marshall, OLB, Boston College 79. Cleveland - Purslow, Claude, CB, Sacramento State 80. Denver - Tsang, Carlton, CB, Auburn 81. New Orleans - Murray, Lincoln, OLB, Southern Methodist 82. Fall River - Hicks, Floyd, DT, Miami, Florida 83. Philadelphia - Augustson, Chris, CB, Ohio State 84. New Jersey M - Marsh, Charlie, WR, Washington State I had been toying with Murray - but he is a defensive player and I don't want to take any of those neanerthals prior to round 5. Of course, the talent is thinning quickly here...so we might bend the rules a bit at some point. 85. White Rock - Greene, Lance, T, Buffalo We didn't interview Greene, because he was too highly rated - but he has good LT passblocking bars (we are pretending that blindside matters, etc...). 86. Tampa Bay - Kohl, Preston, T, Temple 87. Houston - Haslett, Eric, ILB, Arkansas We couldn't decide between Kohl - a guy we accidently scouted because he was rated too high - and the guy we are going to take now. I think we got the better guy, long term. We didn't scout him - but the pickings at T are purdy slim. 88. White Rock - Gustafson, Les, T, Oklahoma State With Keene about to pick with a QB need, we decide to grab some insurance here and take the only other QB we really liked. 89. White Rock - McElroy, Dan, QB, Rutgers His secondary skills aren't as strong, but he has some sense rush abilities and we don't want to be completely screwed if our number one choice falls on his face. 90. Keene - Middleton, Wes, TE, North Carolina State There are no more offensive players to be see for a while, so we trade out. 91. Atlanta - Poston, Alan, RB, Iowa 92. Kansas City - Archibald, Erik, T, Oklahoma 93. Carolina - Tafoya, Matthew, CB, Evansville 94. San Diego - LaFleur, Nate, T, Notre Dame 95. Calverton - Floyd, Darren, FB, Houston 96. South Carolina - Barker, Roderick, CB, Rutgers Well shit. The one FB we wanted gets scooped up by Calverton just two picks before we can choose. That sucks. More single back will cure that. Here are the picks we have for the rest of the draft: 4th round: 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 19, 21, 23, 24, 27 Day 2 (aka build a defense) 5th round: 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 14 6th round: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 13, 14, 18 7th round: 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 12 So 30+ picks and then we go crazy in UDFA. We grab the third man in our wide open offense: 97. White Rock - Heiden, O.J., WR, Pittsburgh 98. San Diego - Hatcher, Larry, DE, Colgate We get our starting TE - the only one we interviewed and the best one available. 99. White Rock - Granger, Jerald, TE, Tulsa We fill out our offensive line. 100. White Rock - Prescott, Ike, T, Virginia 101. White Rock - Ramos, Lance, G, Louisiana State 102. Buffalo - Rasmussen, Reuben, TE, Notre Dame 103. White Rock - Seignious, Jake, G, Georgia 104. Detroit - Connell, Ray, CB, Memphis 105. White Rock - Malone, Vinny, G, Syracuse 106. Tennessee - Coleman, Peter, G, Arkansas 107. New Jersey P - Lawless, Derek, RB, Boston College 108. New Jersey M - Barlow, Fernando, DE, Washington State 109. Jupiter - Youngblood, Randal, WR, Virginia Tech 110. Green Bay - McDaniel, Jim, S, Morehead State 111. Jacksonville - Eskridge, Lewis, RB, The Citadel 112. New Orleans - Jaramillo, Ike, CB, North Carolina State 113. Fall River - Sweeney, Skip, OLB, Hawaii 114. Philadelphia - Kinney, Lee, S, Washington We now have 5 picks left in this round and are really having a hard time finding offensive players to draft. The shine is off the challenge a bit as we muddle through replacement-level players, looking for diamonds that will never amount to much. 115. White Rock - Gibson, Jon, RB, Tennessee 116. Denver - Snyder, Artie, DE, Connecticut 117. White Rock - Norris, Vincent, G, Georgia Tech 118. Houston - Hutchins, Barry, CB, Minnesota 119. White Rock - Nicholson, Mitchell, WR, Nevada - Las Vegas 120. White Rock - McKenzie, Rod, C, Air Force 121. Keene - Brown, Kenneth, DT, Syracuse 122. Tampa Bay - Shields, Kenyon, WR, Arizona 123. White Rock - Gillespie, Wayne, RB, Defiance 124. Carolina - Horiszny, Morris, TE, Northwestern St., La. 125. Kansas City - Kelly, Bubba, CB, Mississippi State 126. San Diego - Seely, Dean, OLB, Mississippi 127. Calverton - Aguayo, Dixon, OLB, Idaho State 128. South Carolina - Gaines, Timothy, DT, Wisconsin Okay - now we are on to the 5th round and we start looking at defense. Here is our position count so far: QB - 2, RB - 3, WR - 4, TE - 1, FB - 0, C - 1, G - 4, T - 3 18 picks. No conflicts!

We finish our draft as I run out of energy. I use a combination of savvy bars style and adjusted rating drafting to put together probably the worst defense in league history.
We add another 20 or so in FA and head into training camp.

Planning for our First Season
Did I mention that I am ecstatic? Our offensive juggernaut is going to have sex with the all of the female relatives of every opposing player in the league. Okay, sure that's just a euphemism, but the point remains that we are going to donkeypunch the league. Introducing the 2008 White Rock Chili Dogs Touchdown Scorers QB Peter Briggs (1.2) - 27/47 WR1 Sammie Newman (1.22) - 35/54 WR2 Jerry Reeves (1.28) - 29/51 RB OJ Winters (1.30) - 44/48 WR3 OJ Heiden (4.1) - 20/29 RB2 Wayne Gillespie (4.27) - 37/58 This team will lead the league in points scored within 4 seasons.

Okay - all respect to people who do these fucking dynasties. There is no way I have the juice to keep the commentary going.
Long story short, I just finished year three. We have finished 4-12, 8-8, and 9-7. We led the league in yards gained this past season but are still far away from the points scored title. RB OJ Winters won offensive rookie of the year in '08 with 1404 yds rushing. He is now our best player - up to 69/69 - but his ypc have gone down each season - from 5.18 to 4.25 to 4.13 - despite running the exact same formations each year. WR Jerry Reeves just finished 2010 with 1710 yds receivng and 14 td. He was named all-league first team wr. He is rated 62/62. WR Sammie Newman also had a big 2010 with 79 catches for 1151 yards and 15 td. He added 25 yd per kick return with 1 return td. He is rated 59/59 and is our third highest rated player. QB Peter Briggs has creeped to 54/54 and just put up his best season - 4382 yds passing, 38td 17int and 99 qb rating. Those four players plus our punter are the ONLY players we have with currents over 50. That's it. Anyway - this is a make or break year for us, I fear. If we don't make the playoffs here I fear it probably will not happen.

We have a huge matchup with division rival Washington - both of us are 7-1 and they routinely beat us like a drum:
Week 10, 2011 played in White Rock, TX 53 degrees, fair, 10 mph wind
The season is going well so far, obviously. Our passing attack is tearing everyone up.

We have our first serious injury losing a backup to a 35 week MCL tear. He never plays - wonder if he retires.
We go into the final week 11-4 going against division rival 11-4 Washington - this is for our first playoffs and a our first division title (and first round home field). Week 17, 2011 played in Washington, 29 degrees, fair, 4 mph wind

And we get pounded at home by SF - 23-7.
WR Sammie Newman get 1st team all league WR on the strength of 107-1831-17 QB Peter Briggs gets 2nd team qb nod for 4,472-39td-15int-100.6rating One of our faceless defenders was 2nd team all safety with 9 picks and 17 passes defended. As a team we were 2nd in ppg and 2nd yardage per game. PLAYOFFS! W00T!

After a down year in 2012 and no playoffs (9-7) the team realizes its full offensive potential:

2015 marks the every other year theory as we win our division after a year of missing the playoffs...and then proceed to go one and done in the playoffs.
Particularly proud of this season as we lost 4 time all-league wr Jerry Reeves to season ending ankle surgery in week 5. Briggs won his third straight MVP - WR Sammie Newman his 4th 1st team all league WR nod. 1st in points scored, 1st in yardage gained...

2016 and we win our fourth division title. Of course we lose our playoff game. We are now 0-4 in career playoff games.
Peter Briggs run of consecutive MVP awards ends at three, despite the fact that he threw 50td (some jackass with less than 30td won and Briggs had to settle for 2nd team qb, too.) Jerry Reeves made first team WR (Sammie Newman got left off despite 101-1596-18td - effing bullshit.) We got our first ever first team all defensive as former 5.3 Earnest Meyer racks up 13 sacks.

2017
We lose two more players to retirement - cornerbacks, unfortunately - so we will have to do some maneuvering to stay legal. Guessing this will be our last season.
