Maybe they were just thinking how they were going to break it to Mangino that Joe's Stone Crab didn't receive enough new shipments to refill what he ate last night.

No mention of the or-gan-eye-za-tion ? But honestly...I could care less. Why even interview them? Does anyone really care what they have to say? To stick to the hockey theme, Crosby will use every cliche known to man in his interviews...but who cares, I'm not watching to hear his thoughts on the opponent, the weather, or world peace.

The title of this thread made me think it was about people who you know are gay but refuse to come out of the closet. Guess I missed on that one.

I could've sworn this was an interview with Prince Fielder.
I once heard him do a triple "you know". |

Have you guys ever had a microphone (or 12) thrust in your face and been forced to answer questions? My 10 minutes of fame came after I picked off 3 passes in a big high school conference showdown. I had three (3) local newspaper reporters interviewing me at midfield after the game and I said a bunch of unintelligible non-sense. Sure, these guys should be good at it by now, but it's not easy to say something coherent that's not cliched and won't get twisted around against you.
By the way, I think I said something like, "coach says upfront if you've got some guts you can play for him." That was the most coherent of my three lines. |

I once told the Fort Worth Star Telegram after one of our football games that, "Well, we came into the game wanting to score more points than they did."
Luckily, the reported took pity on my 17 year old ass, and just quoted me as saying we wanted to "score more" coming into the game.

They never interviewed people in track, so I was saved the embarrassment.
"Yeah, I came out today trying to run 2 miles faster than the other runners on the track. That was my strategy, and, uh, it worked pretty well." |

The guys who covered high school sports in my area would always hit you with absurd questions/statements like "that may have been the best pitching performance I've seen in a decade" after a solid complete game win (but where you also gave up three runs, walked a few guys, and had a ball put into orbit in the 5th with a man on). Depending on your mindset at the time you'd either say something ridiculously self-absorbed in tacit agreement or they'd quote you as saying something along the lines of "I'd like to say it was the performance of the decade, but that's probably a bit much," with no reference to their question. Either way you sounded completely out of touch with reality in print.

We had pretty cool local reporters in high school.
In our conference championship I knocked the opposing starting Qb out on the first play from scrimmage (blindside sack, literally knocked him out when his head hit the ground) My 17yo dumbass says to Mr. Graham ( I really still dont know his 1st name all these years later) "We knew he would make them tough to beat. So I just tried as hard as I could to break him in half to give us a better chance to win" The next morrning the paper reads, "We knew he would make them tough to beat. We just tried tried as hard as we could to win the game." All in all its not the easiest thing to do, to talk civil when your adrenaline is still flowing. But I think at the Pro level these guys should be able to handle it, at that point its part of your job description (Im talking to uh um you un Mr uh Jeff uh Gordon) |

They're professional football players, not professional raconteurs. Anytime I'm watching or listening to something where an athlete is about to be interviewed, it's my signal to get my remote in ready position.

Also, I love the road this thread went down with high school athlete quotes. It's just not where I expected it to go and it was kindof interesting
