Not set on keeping Joba active from day one but he should be a good innings eater. Trying to trade ARod for to get better value. I had the #2 pick and of course Santana goes 1st. I really wanted him as I think pitching dominates head to head leagues. Almost took Utley at 1.2 but went safe with Arod, possibly trading for Utley in a 6 player deal... Thoughts? Been a while since I've been into fantasy baseball as much as I am this year. Last edited by Chubby : 02-21-2008 at 03:19 PM. |

OK, I'll play along...
10-team, NL-only, $260 auction, 5x5 (w/ OBP, not AVG). Here are the guys I can carry over to the auction (minus the obvious cuts): C Snyder, Chris ARI $3-Option 1B Lee, Derrek CHC $34-Option 3B Wigginton, Ty HOU $6-Option 3B Encarnacion, Edwin CIN $11-2009 OF Soriano, Alfonso CHC $20-2009 P Broxton, JonathanLA $11-2008 P Gorzelanny, Tom PIT $1-Option P Lilly, Ted CHC $4-Option P Peavy, Jake SD $26-Option P Bailey, Homer $1-Option P Valverde, Jose HOU $20-Option minors Pie, Felix CF CHC Upton, Justin CF ARI Wood, Kerry RP CHC LaRoche, Andy 3B LA Stewart, Ian 3B COL Lillibridge, Brent SS ATL Bruce, Jay CF CIN Kershaw, Clayton SP LA Contract rules: Players listed as "option" can be signed to a one year deal for 2008 at their current salary OR be signed to a 2-3 year deal with salary increasing $5 per year effective immediately OR cut to free-agency. For example, Homer Bailey is $1-option. So, I can either: * cut him * keep him for one year at $1 and he's a free-agent in 2009 * sign him for 2 or 3 years at $6 this year, $11 in 2009, and $16 in 2010. Players in the minors can be added to the active roster whereby their contract becomes $1-option for the remainder of the season (so I'll have to make a decision on them NEXT year), kept in the minors, or cut. Also, I can only keep 3 players in the minors MAX going into the auction. OK - with that out of the way, I've got some decisions to make. First and foremost, what to do with the players in my minors. If you activate a guy, his contract converts, so his clock starts ticking. For that reason, I'm inclined to: * Activate Pie, Wood, Upton, and LaRoche * Leave Stewart, Kershaw, and Bruce in the minors. * Cut Lillibridge. I'd prefer not to start the clock on Bruce and instead spend some $$ to get a 35 HR guy in my OF. Also, I'm on the fence with Lee. He's expensive, and the other 1B available are Pujols, Berkman, and Howard. All 3 of those could go for more than $34, so maybe I can cut Lee and hope to get him back at a discount. As for new contracts, the only guy I'm thinking of signing is Peavy. I'd get to keep him this year at $31 and next year at $36 if I did (and $41 if I was so inclined), but I may be satisfied to take the profit and keep him just one more season at $26. |

Who did you cut that you could potentially keep? Funny thing about auction keeper drafts is that in ours, Peavy is going to go for about $45, Bailey $15 and if Gorzelanny was a FA, he would go for about $15 too so, I'd your league, I'd be getting Gorzelanny, Bailey and Peavy under contract. If you are going to drop Lee in hopes of a discount, I'd try to get him called up before Howard/Pujols... you might get the discount there with people targeting Howard/Pujols. Seems like that in our league all the time that when you have 3-4 studs at one position, the first guy is discounted and the last guy is overvalued... Although, depends on what you feel Howard/Pujols will go for. If you expect them to go for like 42... I'd hold onto Lee. If you expect them to go for $37, I'd drop him.

Strong on pitching, weak on hitting. Pitching usually dominates head to head but you have NO hitting. If your pitchers slump or get hurt you are screwed. |

Doesn't matter if the OF is that weak right now really. 10 man/21 player teams is really shallow so, should be plenty of guys to pick up at various points in the season.

12-team fantasy points league with 8 keepers...I have to submit my keeper list by the end of the weekend. Here are the guys I have to choose from (only the guys I'm considering as potential keepers) followed by the round they were picked in last year (this is our first season with keepers) as we will lose any pick corresponding to any keeper:
1B\OF Berkman (2nd) 3B Braun (18th) 3B A. Ramirez (5th) SS Cabrera (17th) OF Sizemore (3rd) OF Holliday (4th) OF Markakis (14th) DH Ortiz (1st) SP Kazmir (5th) SP Bonderman (6th) SP J. Shields (19th) I will be picking 7th in our upcoming draft. Up until recently there was no way I was keeping Ortiz because I figured I'd have a chance to grab somebody just as good, better, or re-picking him with my first round pick. With the news of a couple of injuries, namely Pujols, my strategy may not be as sound as I once thought. Here's the first round picks from last season of the guys drafting ahead of me this season: J. Santana A. Soriano M. Ramirez R. Howard A. Pujols J. Reyes I'm almost certain the guy with Pujols isn't going to carry him over as he's a worry wart about injuries...and rightfully so. The wildcard here is the Ramirez owner...he's a cop in Boston and may just play the "homer" card. Now, prior to hearing about Pujols' injury woes, I was prepared to leave Ortiz off my keeper list because I was certain the only choice I'd be making would be to take Ortiz again or to bite the bullet and have to take Ramirez, if he was let go...which I wouldn't be all that upset with either...I'm sure he'll bounce back. Now, complicating things further, here is the remaining list of last season's first round picks: C. Utley A. Rodriguez V. Guerrero C. Beltran D. Wright With Beltran banged up there may be a few more guys picking in the early rounds than I had anticipated. I was also considering leaving Berkman off of my list of keepers simply because I figured I'd be able to get somebody at least as good as him, somebody better, or re-pick him in the 2nd round. Had I submitted my list last week it would have looked like this: 3B Braun (18th) 3B A. Ramirez (5th) SS Cabrera (17th) OF Sizemore (3rd) OF Holliday (4th) OF Markakis (14th) SP Kazmir (5th) SP J. Shields (19th) Now with Kazmir's issues I'm tempted to keep Bonderman (6th) instead even though that's a bit high for him. I'm also torn between keeping Ortiz and/or Berkman because of the injuries to both Beltran and Pujols. If I keep one or both of them...who I do cut from the list above? My guess is Cabrera but I hate to do it because I think he's going to be solid in Chicago and will likely go before the 10th round. Anybody have any thoughts?? |

Are there any sites that will allow you to run customized projections based on your league's stat categories (ie not the typical 5x5)?

A couple of years ago when I had WAY more time on my hands, I downloaded the Lahman database and used Access to query the shit out of it. I was pleased with the results but it took me an awful lot of time to do but also did learn a little about Access as I had never used the program before. Another suggestion, although I'm not sure if it would work or not, but create your own Yahoo League and set the scoring rules to whatever you want. Once you're done, my guess is that Yahoo will rank the players according to your scoring system. Worth a shot?? |

You will be picking 7th and 18th so, out of your top 24 players, how many do you feel are available and how many teams will be picking?
If the # of teams picking in the first 2 rounds > # top 24 players, I'd keep Ortiz or Berkman otherwise you are going to get guys not really valued right. Bonderman seems to high for a 6th but, I guess it depends on how back loaded the draft is with keepers. Seems like Bonderman is going in the 10th round on average from what I've seen, but keeper leagues screw that average up.. if you have 50 top 100 guys picked in rounds 10+, you have to move everyone up 3 or 4 rounds so...

try Diamond Draft (diamonddraft.com) It is $15 which gets you database updates through the year. There are 21 Hitting and 16 pitching categories that you can set your league up with. He updates the database frequently and you can also tweak projections and add players also and then it has a running points total projection that updates on the fly as you add players. It works great for auction drafts because it keeps a running total and does values on the fly also. He has a demo where players A-M are in the database. I think Rotolab also does the same thing, but it is $70...

Keeping Ortiz and Berkman means I need to drop a couple of guys. Cabrera is the easy one and I think the other one would have to be Kazmir. I'm not all that excited about keeping only one pitcher...James Shields...but, with 5 hitters ranked in top 30 by most ADP lists and 2 more in the top 50 I guess I can't complain too much. ![]() Being the first year of this keeper league there isn't really a way to gauge other guys' tendencies just yet so maybe not overthinking things too much is the best approach at this point. |

I love auction drafts - so much more strategy involved.
I went a little top-heavy in my draft that's going on right now, but I actually think I under-paid for these guys. (Though I have plenty of time to post here because I won't be able to afford anyone for a while). 12-team league, 30-man rosters (long-time league, first year as a keeper league). So far I have A-Rod, Ryan Howard, Matt Holiday, David Ortiz, Johan Santana, and Ian Kinsler. I'll need some big-time sleepers to fill out the roster though. |

Had a draft today at a friend's apartment for a 12 team H2H league with standard Yahoo! 5x5 categories, plus BB for hitters and L for pitchers. Had the 11th pick, and overall I'm pretty pleased with my team. I almost always forgo closers in H2H, at least in the draft. Here's the squad:
C-Jarrod Saltalamacchia 1B- Albert Pujols 2B- Rickie Weeks 3B- Edwin Encarnacion SS- Michael Young OF- Manny Ramirez, Nick Markakis, Shane Victorino UT- Carlos Pena BN- Alex Gordon, Kosuke Fukudome, Aaron Hill SP- Johan Santana, Felix Hernandez, Daisuke Matsuzaka, John Lackey, Phillip Hughes, Yovani Gallardo RP- Jonathan Broxton, Carlos Marmol, Octavio Dotel I'm a little concerned about Prince Albert's elbow, but I couldn't pass him up with the 11th pick. I also usually am reluctant to draft pitchers early, but Johan in Round 2 I felt was too good to pass up as well. I know Lackey's out, but he fell a long way because he was injured and I have no problem stashing him on the DL until he gets back. I think I have a pretty good shot at taking home the title this year.

Work league...10 teams, head to head scoring, rosters set weekly on Monday. Had a live draft on Friday with a lot of beer.
Starting rosters: C, 1B, 2B, SS, 3B, OF, OF, OF, Util, Util, SP, SP, SP, RP, RP, P, P...8 bench spots. Stat categories: R, RBI, HR, K, AVG, OBP, SLG, Net Stolen Bases...IP, W, L, K, ERA, WHIP, Net Saves, Inherited Runners Allowed to Score Drafted 10th out of 10 teams (snake draft) C - Joe Mauer (5th) 1B - Carlos Pena (7th) 2B - Rickie Weeks (8th) SS - Jimmy Rollins (2nd) 3B - Scott Rolen (15th) OF - Lance Berkman (3rd) OF - Eric Byrnes (6th) OF - Vernon Wells (9th) Util - Jason Bay (12th) Util - Ken Griffey Jr (14th) Bench: Fukudome (OF - 18th), Kouzmanoff (3B - 19th), Garrett Anderson (OF - 22nd), K. Greene (SS - 23rd), Kotchman (1B - 25th) SP - Johan Santana (1st) SP - Erik Bedard (4th) SP - Scott Kazmir (10th) RP - Bobby Jenks (11th) RP - Francisco Cordero (16th) P - Fausto Carmona (13th) P - Dontrelle Willis (17th) Bullpen: Lidge (20th), Jered Weaver (21st), Blanton (24th) Third base is obviously a huge concern; I'll be scouring the WW for a hot bat at that spot early on. I think I have too much pitching, especially compared to the rest of the league. There's one team that has a comparable starting staff to me, with the other 8 teams way behind us. I might look into trading Bedard. |

10 team Yahoo rotisserie keeper league. stats kept are R, HR, RBI, SB, AVG, OPS for hitters. W, SV, K, ERA, K/BB, and K/9. I picked second
C: Joe Mauer 1B: Adrian Gonzalez 2B: BJ Upton 3B: Garrett Atkins SS: Hanley Ramirez OF: Alfonso Soriano OF: Curtis Granderson OF: Nick Markakis UTIL: Jeff Francoeur BENCH: Howie Kendrick BENCH: Ryan Garko BENCH: Edwin Encarnacion BENCH: Adam Jones BENCH: Khalil Greene SP: John Lackey SP: Roy Oswalt SP: Chad Billingsley SP: Jeff Francis SP: Chien-Ming Wang RP: Billy Wagner RP: Mariano Rivera RP: Chad Cordero P: Brian Wilson P: Gil Meche P: Ubaldo Jimenez P: Kyle Kendrick Really like my offense, starting pitching is a big concern, but that's to be expected when you don't draft your first pitcher until round 6. If Lackey's triceps problem is serious or lingers, i'm in deep shit.

So here's how my top-heavy team turned out, with dollar values. 6X6 Head to Head League (normal stuff plus holds and walks). Very deep 30-man rosters, keeper league, average number of starters. C: Miguel Olivo $1 1B: Ryan Howard $43 2B: Ian Kinsler $25 3B: Alex Rodriguez $58 SS: Rafael Furcal $2 OF: Gary Matthews Jr $1 OF: Chris B. Young $3 OF: Matt Holliday $46 U: David Ortiz $46 --------------------------------- R: Todd Helton $16 R: Chris Snyder $1 R: Deivi Cruz $1 R: Jerry Owens $1 R: Bill Hall $1 R: Carlos Gomez $1 R: Jason Giambi $1 SP: Johan Santana $50 RP: Matt Capps $1 P: Adam Miller $1 P: Micah Owings $1 P: Hower Bailey $1 P: Jeremy Accardo $1 P: Heath Bell $1 P: Brian Wilson $1 P: Kevin Gregg $1 ----------------------------- R: Troy Patton $1 R: Jake Westbrook $1 R: Philip Humber $1 R: Franklin Morales $1 R: Nick Blackburn $1 This is the oddest team I've ever drafted. I realize that a lot of these $1 picks are useless, but there's very little time to refer to cheat sheets ect, in this format, so I imagine there will be a roster shakeup at those levels before I start. Offensively, it's a ridiculous team, even with the weaknesses at Catcher, 3rd Outfielder, and the Bench. But I figure over the course of the season, I can find an outfielder to chip in. And I really don't need much from the catcher position with that lineup. I was very excited to get Furcal for $2. The pitching staff is going to need some help, but I always have huge turnover in my starting rotation, and I really don't think there's a whole lot of difference outside the top guys. So I decided not to spend any money there, and will do a lot of day trading based on matchup. I did manage to pick quite a few $1 closers - I'll probably pickup the "backup closer" on all those teams and I should be OK in both Saves and Holds. I also manged to pick up a good number of "prospects" to stash away for keeper purposes. Last edited by molson : 03-17-2008 at 08:23 PM. |
