The FOFC Hockey Draft - Voting Thread

This is the voting thread for the FOFC Hockey Draft. The original draft thread can be found here: http://www.operationsports.com/fofc/...ad.php?t=64139

Competitors drafted teams of 9 players and 1 coach. The unique rules of this draft are shown below:

1) Once you draft a player from a team, you cannot draft another player from that team or any other team he played for the rest of the draft.
2) No player may be drafted more than once.
3) You are encouraged to write up a little piece on each of your picks to explain why you chose a player for that certain category. It could help you later on when it comes time for voting.
4) Since rule #1 was altered to include all the teams a player has played for...you are allowed to draft players from defunct teams. For example if you draft someone from Hartford, that does NOT eliminate Carolina. Same goes for Winnipeg and Phoenix...etc..etc. It only counts if they played for both Hartford and Carolina. Then both teams would be eliminated.

Each team had to fill a roster in the following categories:
  1. Power Forward
  2. Sniper
  3. Playmaker
  4. Lockdown Defenseman
  5. Offensive Defensemen
  6. Big Hitter
  7. Leader
  8. Enforcer
  9. Goalie
  10. Head Coach

It is up to you, the voter, to choose the person who had the best drafted team considering the categories above, not just who put together the best team of players. It is up to the voter to determine which works best fit in which categories, and to factor that into their voting choices. No further guidance will be given -- it's your call.

Voting format
You will vote for your first, second and third choices, with points awarded in 5/3/1 format.

Please post in something resembling this format:

1. Team name
2. Team name
3. Team name

Comments on why you voted as you did are strongly encouraged. Comments from participants and observers are encouraged. Participants can campaign for votes as they see fit, keeping in mind that voters may or may not appreciate that. If you change your mind, please edit your original vote post rather than posting again.

Draft participants are allowed to vote.

Please bold your votes, and do no bold any commentary (so that I can scan the thread for votes as we go).

The deadline for votes is Monday, March 24, 2008 at 5PM Eastern.

My coach, Barry Melrose, may not have the track record of the coaches selected by some other drafters.

He only lasted 3 years with the Kings, and did not win a Cup. In fact, he only made one final, riding Gretzky's coattails.

But, in terms of his impact on hockey, you can't put a number on the greatness of his mullet. His legacy in the NHL can not be measured solely on wins and losses.

Power Forward -Cam Neely

Cam Neely is considered the pre-eminent power forward of his era.

Through 726 regular season games, Cam Neely collected 694 points — 395 goals and 299 assists — and was selected to the NHL's Second All-Star Team in 1988, 1990, 1991 and 1994. Cam also recorded 57 goals and 32 assists for 89 points in 93 playoff contests and is the Boston Bruins' all-time leading goal scorer with 55 tallies.

In 1993-94, he scored 50 goals in 49 games (the third fastest of all times). When healthy, he was as dominant a physical forward as there has been.

Sniper - IIya Kovalchuk

Kovalhuck has 459 points in 456 career games. He has 250 goals in that time. Since scoring 29 goals in his impressive rookie year, Kovalchuk has scored at least 38 goals or more in each of his 5 seasons in the league. He plays with passion and a physical edge. He led the league in goals in 2004 and won the Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy that year. He has already scored 50 goals this year.

Playmaker - Sidney Crosby

He was the first pick of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft and one of the leading scorers during the 2005-06 NHL season, finishing 6th in scoring with 102 points (39 goals, 63 assists). By capturing his first Art Ross Trophy with 120 points (36 goals, 84 assists) in the 2006-07 NHL season, he became the youngest player and the only teenager ever to win a scoring title in any major North American sports league. That same season, Crosby also became just the seventh player in NHL history to win the Hart Trophy, Art Ross Trophy, and Lester B. Pearson Award in the same season—thus earning all three highest individual honours for an NHL forward in only his second year as a professional hockey player.

Lockdown Defenseman - Chris Pronger

He's big, he's strong, and he's an asshole. A perfect fit.

He won the Norris Trophy and the Hart Trophy in 2000. He was the first defenseman to win the Hart Trophy since Bobby Orr. He led Edmonton to the Cup Finals in 2006 and won it with Anaheim in 2007. He can shutdown almost any forward and also adds great offensive skill and rugged edge.

Offensive Defensemen - Red Kelly

Red Kelly was a unique player - versatile and talented enough to be one of the National Hockey League's best-ever defensemen early in his career and a high-scoring center at the end. Kelly was an All-Star for eight consecutive seasons with the Red Wings, six times on the First Team, and won the Lady Byng Trophy three times. In 1954 he was chosen as the first recipient of the James Norris Memorial Trophy as the outstanding defenseman in the league.

He was considered the #23 best player in the Hockey News Top 100 NHLers of all time.

Big Hitter - Larry Playfair

Larry Playfair was one of the toughest blue liners in recent history of the NHL. It didn't take long for this punishing hitter and great fighter to have his opponents avoiding him.

Larry led the Sabres in penalty minutes for six straight seasons (1979-85) and was the Sabre nobody wanted to mess with. He was the first Sabre to reach the 1000 penalty minute mark in a career as well as the first to break the 200 PIM plateau in one season, which he did twice. He also set a club record for most PIMs in one season, 258 in 81-82.

Larry will not be remembered for any offensive flare but rather for his punishing hits and heavy blows with his fists. He was a fierce competitor who earned every minute and shift in the NHL.

Leader - Bobby Clarke

A talented playmaker, he had three 100-point seasons, twice led the league in assists, and played in eight NHL All-Star Games. He was also a great defensive player, a great checker, and one of the best in the face-off circle. One of the game's great leaders, Clarke was the captain of the notorious Broad Street Bullies during their heyday in the mid-1970s. The Bullies were a reflection of their captain, who had a tireless work ethic, a strong will to win, and a willingness to do anything it took to win even if it meant bending the rules.

Enforcer - Derek Boogaard

He's 6'7" and weighs 270 lbs. That's a professional wrestler, not a hockey player. He's big, he's mean, he's nasty. I watched him fly head over heels through the glass at a prospect tournament when his target (luckily)ducked at the very last moment.

Boogaard's knockout of fellow enforcer Todd Fedoruk helped spark debate over increasing the punishment for fighting in the NHL. During this fight, Boogaard landed a brutal punch to the cheek sending Fedoruk to the ice. As a result, Fedoruk had to undergo surgery to reconstruct his shattered cheek using titanium plates

Boogaard and his brother Aaron run the Derek and Aaron Boogaard Fighting Camp in Regina, Saskatchewan, for children ages 12 to 18. Yes, he runs a camp teaching children how to fight.

Goaltender - Patrick Roy

Winningest goalie in the history of the NHL. He led Montreal to the Stanley Cup as a rookie goaltender. He won three more Stanley Cups. He also won 3 Con Smythes, 3 Vezina Trophies.

As far as big game goaltenders, there really isn't any better than Patrick Roy.

Head Coach - Frank Boucher

As a player, Boucher helped lead the Rangers to their first Stanley Cup in the team's second year of existence in the spring of 1928. Boucher dominated the post-season scoring with seven goals and 10 points, including both of New York's goals in the Cup-clinching 2-1 triumph over the Montreal Maroons in the final game of the best-of-five series. Five seasons later he contributed four points to the Blueshirts' second Cup victory at the expense of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Coaching became Boucher's passion as soon as he retired as a player. He guided the New York Rovers to the championship of the Eastern Hockey League in 1938-39 before rejoining the Rangers the following year. Boucher made a triumphant return to the Blueshirts by coaching them to victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1940 Stanley Cup finals. That same regular season he pulled goaltender Dave Kerr with two minutes left in the game in an attempt to tie the score, initiating a trend that would become exceedingly popular in the coming years.

Frank Boucher was one of the finest all-round players of his time, his gentlemanly conduct on the ice served as a benchmark for many who followed him. On February 9, 1962, Boucher was presented the Sportsmanship Brotherhood's annual award in New York. He was honored posthumously with the Lester Patrick Trophy in 1993 for his immense contribution to the game in the United States. A member of the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame and the Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame, Boucher was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1958.

Steve Yzerman: 1,755 points in 1,514 regular season games. 185 points in 196 postseason games. A First-Team All-Star, Conn Smythe Trophy winner, Selke Trophy winner, Masterton Trophy winner, member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, Olympic gold medallist, and a three-time Stanley Cup Champion. Longest serving captain of one team in the history of the NHL (19 seasons).

Most blurbs are from Legends of Hockey

Power Forward - Keith Tkachuk

1046 Games Played, 495 Goals, 482 Assits, 977 Points, +48, 2100 PIMs

Tkachuk, one of many U.S. players in the NHL from the Boston area, is best known around league arenas as a power forward and it's no surprise that his hero as a kid was the Bruins' Cam Neely. He attended Boston University for just one year after becoming the first pick of the Jets in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft out of high school. He joined the U.S. Olympic team in 1991 and 1992 and his first full season with the Jets was 1992-93. By his third NHL season, Tkachuk was a 50-goal scorer and in 1996-97 became the first american-born player to lead the NHL in goals with 52. The left wing (and sometimes center) was also developing into one of the premier power-forwards in the game.

Sniper - Rick Nash

Following a strong rookie season, Nash exploded offensively in 2003-04, tying for the league lead in goals (41) with Calgary's Jarome Iginla and Atlanta's Ilya Kovalchuk. Nash became a co-winner of the Maurice Richard Trophy as the league's top goal scorer and this in only his second season in the league...

...After a strong NHL season in 2003-04, Nash suited up HC Davos in 2004-05 following the NHL labour dispute and subsequently helped Canada capture a silver medal at the 2005 World Championships. Nash's international experience carried over into the 2006 Winter Olympics where he skated with Team Canada.
That year Nash and Team Canada were unsuccessful in taking home the Gold Medal, however the following year Nash would lead team Canada to a World Championship. Nash was named MVP of the tournament after netting two goals in the game that lead Canada to its record 24th world title.

Playmaker - Brian Trottier

Bryan Trottier was a modern-day player with old-fashioned attributes. At a time when specialists were beginning to take over from the all-round player, Trottier was a throwback. He was a defensively sound centerman with the vision and instincts of a pure scorer. Over an 18-year National Hockey League career, he led his teams to the Stanley Cup six times, including four consecutive titles with the New York Islanders in the early 1980s. And his achievements went beyond team success. He was the winner of the Calder Trophy as the league's top rookie, the Art Ross Trophy as top scorer and the Hart Trophy as the most valuable player.

Lockdown Defenseman - Eddie Shore

An imposing blend of raw talent and intimidation, defenseman Eddie Shore was one of the greatest ever to play his position in any era and his end-to-end rushes became every bit as famous as his crushing bodychecks and nasty disposition.

Offensive Defensemen - Viacheslav (Slava) Fetisov

Fetisov was well respected by his teammates for his strength of character both as a player and as a person, and he served as captain of both the National Team and of the Central Army squad.

Fetisov possessed exceptional mobility and instinctively knew when to pinch in from the blueline to create a scoring chance in the offensive zone. As a defenceman in the 1980s he had few rivals, not just at home but worldwide. He was named as the top defenceman at the European Junior Hockey Championships in 1976 and achieved the same honour at the 1978 World Junior Championships along with a berth on the tournament All-Star team. He was a nine-time All-Star and five-time winner of the best defenceman award at the senior World Championships and played on a total of nine Olympic and World Championship teams during his international hockey career.

In 1989, at age 31, Fetisov finally began his NHL career as a member of the New Jersey Devils. He would go on to play for nine years in the NHL, including his final three in Detroit. While with the Red Wings, Fetisov participated in the 1997 and 1998 All-Star games, and earned two Stanley Cup rings in 1997 and 1998.

Big Hitter - Dustin Brown

He currently leads the league with 281 hits and had 258 hits last year. He can also score chipping in 30 goals this season.

Leader - Mark Messier

A player renowned for his leadership abilities and one of the all-time leading NHL scorers, Messier emerged from the great Edmonton Oilers teams of the 1980s to become a hockey superstar. He was a powerful skater who combined playmaking skill and a goal-scoring touch with the toughness necessary to survive and thrive in the corners. Six times his teams sipped from the Stanley Cup and on two occasions Messier took home the Hart Trophy as the league's most valuable player.

Like Gordie Howe, Messier is credited with being the most complete player of his generation. He was a power forward, a two-way left winger and sometime center with talent and overwhelming power and size and an unpredictable mean streak...

...The Rangers were down 3-2 in games to New Jersey in the Eastern Conference finals. Messier publicly guaranteed a game six win. He followed up on his promise with a stellar performance, scoring a hat-trick in the third period to bring his team back from elimination and force a seventh game. Messier and the Rangers dispatched the Devils and then won the Cup in another thrilling series against Pavel Bure and the Vancouver Canucks. Messier scored the Cup winning goal in the seventh game. With the victory, the franchise's first in 54 years, Messier became the first player to captain two different teams to Stanley Cup titles...

...Following a lock out year in 2004-05, Messier called it a career in the summer of 2005. A year after, both the New York Rangers and Edmonton Oilers retired his number 11 in pre-game ceremonies. Earlier that year, the National Hockey League created the Mark Messier Trophy, a monthly leadership award.

Enforcer - Dale Hunter

Hunter retired as the first and only man in NHL history to collect 300 goals, 1,000 points and 3,000 penalty minutes.

Goaltender - Ed Belfour

17 NHL Regular Seasons 963 GP, 484 Wins, 320 Losses, 111 Ties, 2.50 Goals Against Average, 0.909 Save %

12 NHL Postseasons 161 GP, 88 Wins, 68 Losses, 2.17 Goals Against Average, .920 Save %

2 Vezina Trophies - Awarded to the goalkeeper adjudged to be the best at his position.
4 William M. Jennings Trophies - Awarded to the goalkeeper(s) having played a minimum of 25 games for the team with the fewest goals scored against it.
Won the Calder - Awarded to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition in the NHL.

Head Coach - Hector "Toe" Blake

Blake's performance behind the Montreal bench between 1955 and 1968 was unparalleled. He won an incredible eight Stanley Cup titles in just 13 seasons, including five in a row in his first five years of coaching. In all, his playoff record was 82-37, a wins-to-losses ratio rarely matched in the NHL. His Habs teams never had a losing record and they never failed to make the playoffs.

Yeah I know weak giving myself a vote, but being honest. I was close to giving 3rd place to Taz, but (and just my opinion) hard to compare guys in their first 3-4 seasons in the league (Dustin Brown and to a lesser extent Nash) against guys who did it their entire careers. Maybe just my personal bias.

Sorted every pick by "position" and then gave them a score with 12 being the best pick for that position to 1 being the worst. Added up the scores and we get:

1. Maple Leafs 75
2. Detox/Fidatelo 73
3. TazFTW 73

Missed it by that much award goes to

4. Suburban Rhythm 72

I dont think it was they weren't smart enough. He coached a few teams and they were gone when it came time for some of them to pick coaches.

Jeesh.

Check out the rules...he would have eliminated 1/2 the NHL. Besides, Melrose's mullet was WAY better than Bowmans.

Jeesh.

5 teams is a lot to eliminate for a coach. Especially when those teams are Montreal, Chicago, Detroit, Pittsburgh, and Buffalo.

By the way, I shouldn't make fun of someone's pick.

Lemieux had back problems after he cut his mullet. His lower back wasn't use to not carrying all the weight of the mullet and went into spasms.

I won't do the full page pitch since nobody will read it, but here's a quick summary of why you should vote for me:

- One the top players of all time at playmaker
- Best defensive pair in the draft, with the possible exception of Pumpy's
- My goalie is the best one taken in the draft, according to the Hockey News list (since Sawchuk and Plante weren't picked)
- I'll post pictures of Mrs. Leafs if I win
- Keon, Iginla and Bure are all solid picks
- Big hitter and coach are weak, but no truly "wtf" picks like most other teams have and nobody "strategically" picked in the wrong position in hopes nobody will notice

Edit: OK, a deal's a deal. Here's the pics I promised. Hopefully this is OK with the mods... techincally that puck is covering most of the truly NSFW area. But I'm sure imageshack will delete it after a few weeks.

I don't expect to win this as my drafts tend to be a bit eccentric, but for my own interests, where did I whiff? Hockey was something I wtched a lot of twenty years ago. I enjoyed this a great deal, but felt lost at times.

What an argument!

So I went through every 'position' and ranked each guy, 12 points for best, 1 for worst, then totalled 'em up for everyone. Apparently I won... yeesh. I actually was trying to be hard on my picks too... lame.

Anyways, removing me from the equation, here are my picks:

1) TazFTW
2) Maple Leafs
3) Oilers9911 / Honolulu_Blue (tie)

Here is my ranking sheet if anyone is interested in picking it apart:

Power Forward Sniper Playmaker Lockdown Defenseman Offensive Defenseman Big Hitter Leader Enforcer Goaltender Head Coach
Fidatelo 8 10 4 2 7 10 11 11 6 9 78
TazFTW 7 2 9 11 5 6 12 9 4 12 77
Maple Leafs 9 7 11 10 10 8 4 7 8 2 76
Oilers9911 12 11 6 5 4 11 2 5 3 11 70
Honolulu_Blue 11 3 10 7 6 2 9 6 12 4 70
johnny93g 5 4 5 8 12 4 8 2 10 10 68
Lathum 1 12 8 1 3 12 3 12 7 6 65

I'm not ready to vote just yet, but these are all strong players for their positions (well, Dave Taylor may have been a small stretch). Vote for me and I'll post pictures of Mrs. Leafs.

Just curious about one of them. Sergei Zubov, 2nd from the bottom offensive D?? Really? Behind Boyle, Redden and Fetisov? And I'd probably even argue with behind Blake, solely based on the position they are slotted in.

I thought about lobbying harder for Bossy too-- only player with 9 straight 50+ G seasons. But I can't fault the guys ahead of him either.

I did a similar thing where I ranked how much I liked each player in each position and assigned point-values. If I wasn't familiar with someone, then that wasn't great for the person that picked them. Here's who got the most points:

1. Maple Leafs
2. TazFTW
3. Fidatelo

You know what? You're absolutely right, I screwed Zubov pretty badly there. I'm not sure what I was thinking actually. It doesn't really help you out much cuz you wouldn't move up enough to get into the 70+ point range, but it would actually drop TazFTW into a tie with Maple Leafs.

As for Bossy, I struggled with that a lot, but I just couldn't move him ahead of the other guys. I think he is where he belongs (although I'm certain he would disagree, what a bitter man!).

Am I reading that right? It's March, and the Maple Leafs are in first? I can believe 27 points by the end of March, but not first place.
