10 Songs That Represent Your Current Musical Taste

We're going to try something to supplement the many music threads on FOFC. I'd like you to put together a list of 10 songs that most represents your current music listening habits. As I put my list together I realized this is very hard. For one, I found myself including songs that I once listened to very often but don't listen to so much anymore. I will start things off with my list of 10 songs.

As I mentioned, this was very hard for me to narrow down. I had to make some sacrifices and hope that I could pick one song to broadly represent other songs. I will cheat some and talk about the songs that almost made it, but here is the list, in no particular order. I am by no means a "music snob," so I'm sure some of my selections could receive eye rolls. I'm also sure I will look at this tomorrow and wonder what the hell I was thinking with some of the selections.

"Talk on Indolence" from Four Thieves Gone by The Avett Brothers. Choosing one Avett Brothers song was one of the hardest parts of compiling this list. I finally settled on a song that I think most represents the Avett Brothers' musical style. Some of my favorite songs from them are more mellow and don't represent the core of their appeal (I was very close to choosing "Famous Flower of Manhattan" from Four Thieves Gone or "Backwards With Time" from The Gleam). In honesty, if I were to select songs representative of the music I currently regularly listen to, 9 or 10 of them would be by The Avett Brothers.

"The Times They Are A-Changin'" from The Times They Are A-Changin' by Bob Dylan. I am relatively new to Dylan. I started listening to his music probably three to four years ago. I was always turned off by the quality of his vocals, but I have come to realize why he is respected for his lyrical talents.

"You Went Away" from If It Was You by Tegan and Sara. I happened upon Tegan and Sara several years ago when they opened for Ben Folds. I bought a few of their albums as they were released and continued to enjoy their music. Naive as I was, I went to a Tegan and Sara show roughly two years ago and realized they have a very large lesbian following. For some reason this song pulls me in the most with the line (and pacing of), "When my loud guitar comes in; When my thumpin' drums come through."

"Devil's Dance Floor" from Swagger by Flogging Molly. The decision between FM and Dropkick Murphys was tough. This song is meant to represent the broad genre including FM, DM, The Pogues, et al. One reason I chose this song over Dropkick is that my favorite Dropkick song is lowkey (Green Fields of France). So, much like The Avett Brothers, I went for a song more representative of the vague FM/DM genre.

"Fred Jones, Part 2" from Rockin' the Suburbs by Ben Folds. While I don't mean to put Ben Folds on the same level as Dylan, I think he is a modern equivalent. Fantastic lyrics, understated instrumentals and songs that make you think.

"The Denial Twist" from Get Behind Me Satan by The White Stripes. The White Stripes are a band I absolutely love, but do not listen to enough. It was also hard to select one song, but I feel like this has many of the elements that draw me to The White Stripes without being one of their mainstream hits (or I just don't listen to the radio enough and it actually is).

"Cousin Mary" from Giant Steps by John Coltrane. This album always kicked off parties at the college apartment I shared with Wade. It has forever stuck with me as my favorite instrumental "jazz-esque" album. I say "jazz-esque" because I had to drop Miles Davis ("Flamenco Sketches") off of here in favor of Coltrane.

"God's Gonna Cut You Down" from Americana V: A Hundred Highways by Johnny Cash. Another artist that is hard to select one song from. However, one of the reasons I love Johnny Cash is that he is, much like the punk music I love, a constant cover artist. The Americana series is excellent. I could have easily chosen "Hurt" or one of his other covers, but this song, for some reason, really sums up Cash for me.

"Messengers" from Let's Talk About Feelings by Lagwagon. My interest in "bubble gum punk" is fading a bit. I've been listening to a lot more singer-songwriter/indy/whatever music such as Ben Folds, Guster, Decemberists, Tegan and Sara, Kate Nash, etc as I move toward 30. I had to represent them here, though. Lagwagon is the band that cemented my interested in the genre. I considered "Superman" by Goldfinger here (not quite punk) or "Hitchin' a Ride" by Green Day (much more mainstream), but I stuck with Lagwagon.

Ive Just Seen a Face - The Beatles
Been on a Beatles kick for the past, um, looong time I guess. I love unabashed pop music, and Paul McCartney, so here's both in one.

Godless- The Dandy Warhols
Droning shoegazer type music just does it for me. This combines it perfectly with pop music. I wish this band still made music like this.

A Distorted Reality is a Necessity to be Free - Elliott Smith
Every day it's a different Elliott song. The tone of this song, not music wise, just mood wise, blows me away. This is the unreleased, shorter, less produced version of "A Distorted Reality Is Now A Necessity To Be Free", which I dont like nearly as much for some reason. Different lyrics to boot.

West Coast - Coconut Records
Coconut Records is really just Jason Schwartzman going solo, but damn if this song isnt great. Good hook, some nice longing, and a catchy sing-a-long part.

Stronger - Kanye West
The best hip hop arena song ever in my mind.

Read My Mind - The Killers
More new arena rock. I just like the way this one builds.

Neighborhood #3 (Power Out) - Arcade Fire
If every band was more like the Arcade Fire, the world would be a better place. Their attitude, jubilance, song writing style, upbeat music...it's all here.

You Say - Ride on Rides
A year ago my piano pop choice would've been a Ben Folds Five song, but we are going on a decade of hearing the same 3 albums of theirs. I don't dig Ben Folds solo stuff nearly as much, so the piano pop choice, of which I will always have representation in one of these lists, falls on the little known LA band with a song they dont seem to realize is as amazing as it is. It's not even their "single".

I'll Believe in Anything - Wolf Parade
I don't know how to classify this. Multiple choruses, interesting guitar lines, crazy video (duels with cannons!)...but after a year of hearing it, I still am not sick of it.

I am the Walrus - The Beatles
More Beatles. More drug songs. This just opened up the world to so many more musical possibilities. So many bands I love wouldnt do what they do if the Beatles hadn't experimented like they did. Plus I cant have a list without John Lennon.

I'll give it a try. I'm pretty eclectic, but nothing that hasn't been heard before. Generally, I enjoy songs about pain. Accepting pain, overcoming pain, just basically songs that deal with some sort of emotional turmoil. There is something about accepting hardship and just chalking it up to a learning experience, and keeping yourself hopeful, as well. I also love big buildups. Rising action rules!

Talk Talk – It’s My Life
The classic song that was covered because Gwen Stefani needed one more “hit” with No Doubt before she launched her solo career. Once you’ve sifted through the rubble from the 80s, Talk Talk is left in the pan.


Elvis Costello – Peace, Love, Understanding
For me, Costello is one of those artists you discover long after everyone else because there was noone to expose me to his full length albums. Great artist, and much more rocking than I’d thought. Others in this group: Captain Beefheart, Zappa


Interpol – All Fired Up
The Interpol buzz has kind of died down, but I love Our Love to Admire. It’s one of those classic “grows on you” albums.


Radiohead – There There
My favorite band and easily the most important band today. The great thing is that it doesn’t seem like they’re going to self-destruct, and even if they do, their solo stuff is great. I put There There as my entry because I like how even the “average” Radiohead albums have at least a few great tracks, like “How to Disappear Completely”. There There was also the best song they performed live.


Chris Cornell – Follow My Way
Isn’t Audio Slave kind of like a light beer? You’re glad you’ve got a beer, but it’s not quite Soundgarden, and it’s certainly not RATM. But Chris Cornell’s solo album “Europhoria Morning” is more like the Soundgarden album that would have happened if they’d made one more, but if Kim Thayil had quit the band before the recording started. In other words, you’ve got all the great Cornell tracks, and you don’t have to pretend you like the “Kickstand” filler. It’s true that you don’t have the really rockin stuff, but Euphoria Morning makes up for that by not being overplayed to death. I still listen to it often.


Led Zeppelin – How Many More Times
I was Zeppelin junky growing up, and this song was the one I never had in my collection (I had Zep 1 on cassette, and it got left off), and I think it is still their best track. Which leads directly to…


Sleater Kinney – Let’s Call it Love
It’s funny that after decades of bands trying to be Led Zeppelin, the one that produced the most Zeppeliny song ever was a chick 3-piece punk band. Go figure. (though I have read that the drummer was a big Bonham fan) I really hope Sleater Kinney can reconcile their differences because the Woods is a triumphant record and I’d like to hear what they’d do next.

Isn't it fun having that one band that you love that you know most people can't stand. Actually, this band best coincides with my FOF lifespan, so it belongs here.


Pink Floyd – Pigs (three different ones)
I fight with the guy who controls the I-tunes in the office over this song. We all put our favorite CDs into the I-tunes and put it on random. He likes punk music, so his songs last 87 seconds, while I get Pigs.

I get a kick out of this one. First because of the "bubble gum punk" label. There is no solid label that will stick to this music. When I was a teenager it was fine to call it pop punk, then that became 'wrong, because you can't put those two things together'. Bubble gum seems to be an acceptable term that means the same shit to me. I also here it labeled as skate punk, which to me Fat Wreck bands never really fit that label but being from LA they got it.

I don't really care though. I love Lagwagon and if there is a Fat Wreck band to keep listening to they are the one to me. I have never stopped listening to them, and like Bad Astronaut (the side project) as well. Although an early song would have been my choice. I love what they transformed into, but the earlier is still better to me. Later on they really morphed into....I don't know, Adult Punk?

I agree. This is why I put it in quotes. The problem is that punk is so varied, and I don't tend to listen to the more hardcore stuff. I was never "into" punk, I just found a lot of bands I like -- I picked up Let's Talk About Feelings randomly one time, so it is "the early stuff" for me. I have Trashed and.. erm.. a newer one.. but this is the album that brought me into the fold.

They have about 50 or 60 fantastic songs. If you want to know about The Avett Brothers, drop me a line. I can recommend albums/songs depending on what you like about them. You have to see them live if you want to truly appreciate them.

Catapult - Counting Crows :: I've been a huge Counting Crows fan since way back and I've seen them in concert at least once a year for the past decade (I'm seeing them twice this year...in Birmingham & Atlanta). Catapult sung live is just killer...they don't do it as much as some of their bigger hits, though.

Magic Man - Heart :: I watched a Heart concert on one of the music channels last night where they played Dreamboat Annie in it's entirety...good stuff. While Barracuda or Crazy on You may be the song that first comes to mind when you think of Heart, I think Magic Man is just a cut above since Ann Wilson gets to show off her amazing voice a little more. Speaking of Ann Wilson's voice, wow...despite how much her looks have changed over the years, hearing her sing a song still gives me goosebumps. She's that good.

Earthquake Weather - Beck :: I like pretty much anything by Beck, but something about the sound of this one makes it one of my favorites.

Dear Prudence - The Beatles :: Dear Prudence has been my favorite Beatles song for a while now. While it appears on the White Album, I think it's the perfect song that caputures the spirit of their early work, as well as the sound of their later work.

Transatlanticism - Death Cab for Cutie :: I've had to make quite a few trips to Europe in the last couple of years and each time I get on a plane that crosses the Atlantic, I flip the iPod over to the Transatlanticism album and listen to it in it's entirety. While The New Year is the song that kicks off the album (and "flips" me into travel mode in the airport), the title track is my favorite cut.

Drifting, Falling - The Ocean Blue :: This one goes back to my college days. When I listen to this band, I tend to listen to their first three albums (The Ocean Blue, Cerulean, Beneath the Rhythm And Sound) consecutively in one sitting. They're just so mellow, it's the perfect way to relax...plus, the sax on this track is amazing.

Keg in the Closet - Kenny Chesney :: I've never been a big country music fan, but my wife turned me onto Kenny Chesney a few years ago. While I like a lot of his songs, Keg in the Closet is the one I have the most fun listening to since it's an ode to his college days.

Fight the Power - Public Enemy :: Motherfuck Elvis and John Wayne. Yes, I'm white and yes, I live in suburbia.

Black Star - Radiohead :: Like st.cronin, I'm a big Radiohead fan. Black Star is really an emotional song about not really knowing what the F is going on in one's relationship.

Your Hand in Mine - Explosions in the Sky :: Otherwise known as the theme song to Friday Night Lights (the movie). Good song, good album, good band.
