Workout Advice
So one of my friends asked me about what she can do as a cardio workout at home. The caveat is that she doesn't have any typical cardio equipment for in house use (eg: stationary bike, eliptical) and she can't do anything with bouncing due to a medical issue (so running, jumping, rebounder are all out). She's looking for a half hour length program and is in pretty good shape already but doesn't have much idea what to do. I'm at a loss as well, the best idea I could come up with would be to use light weights and string together the exercises, three sets, 15 reps each. Ideas?
Thanks. |

If she wants a cardio workout, then weight-lifting really isn't going to meet that goal. Sure, it's good for you, but if you're looking for pure cardio, to keep your heart rate at 60-85% of your max, weight-lifting won't do that.
I don't know what her situation is, but without exercise equipment at home, it'll be tough, especially since it sounds like she's also unable to do an aerobics video or anything. If she has a little bit of money, she might get an inexpensive bike (and hey, when it's nice outside, she can ride that outside, too!) and a trainer for the bicycle. A trainer is basically a stand-type-thing that turns the bike into more or less an exercise bike. Something like this. I have a trainer for my bike and on days I can't make it to the gym, I've been known to use that instead. /tk

He said nothing with bouncing. Plus it has to be a half hour program.

How about one of the belly-dancing exercise videos? They're low-impact, and are becoming quite popular.

My wife does Tae Bo. That works up a quick lather pretty good.
Personally, I do stair climbs. Up and down once counts as 1 -- I try to do 50. I'm in semi-decent shape, but after 50 I'm drenched in sweat and my thighs and calves are barking. |

walking
She can walk around the neighborhood or just around her own house. She can get a pedometer and aim for at least 10,000 steps a day. |
