Las Vegas - downtown

I'm booking my parents Vegas trip and they're staying @ Caesars for 3 nights but want to stay downtown for a night. I've been downtown but have never stayed at a hotel. Which hotels do you guys suggest? I'm thinking Golden Nugget ($120 for the night) but Four Queens I can book @ $54 for the night. Any others I should look at?

You can get plenty of cheap rooms downtown, but it's well worth it to buck up and pay the extra dollars to stay at the Nugget instead. It's a great place to stay. YMMV at anything else in the downtown area. I've gambled on a couple of cheaper hotels downtown in previous trips and lost badly. You can't go wrong with the Nugget.

I've stayed at the (Las) Vegas Club, Binion's, Four Queens, and El Cortez downtown. I judged all to be fair value for the price I paid (which wasn't much), but then again, my needs in hotel rooms are modest. I haven't stayed at the Golden Nugget, but their reputation precedes them as the best rooms downtown.

It depends on how fussy your parents are. If they think Caesars is just good enough, then nothing but the GN will do. But if they want to immerse themselves in the downtown that I love, they should stay somewhere else. The Four Queens is as good as any (slightly better, IMO), but unless it's a weekend, you should be able to do better than $54 for a night.

Booking yourself solo I'd probably give a different answer but if it's your parents, yeah I'd say the Nugget probably. But it's been several years now since I've been so somebody else could have renovated and also be up the scale with them too.

If Vegas Vic is still around he could probably give you an up to date answer, maybe try PM'ing him?

Las Vegas Club is pretty good bang for the buck.

Thanks for the initial input guys... my parents are very laid back people who don't get out much. They're Vegas virgins and are headed for a culture shock when they see how enormous these hotels are I wish I was going to be there when they see the strip for the first time!

If it is their first time there, ya, I'd stay at a better place for them. Generally though I try to find one of the cheapest places to stay either downtown or on the strip just because I'm not in the room that much to really care beyond a clean room, bed and shower.

Same here. I loved The Plaza for what it was and had maybe the best trip I ever had there staying several nights at perhaps the worst hotel downtown (at the time anyway) Golden Gate Casino – Las Vegas

Just checked the website to see if it was still there and they've apparently remodeled and were voted Best of Downtown by the locals. Must have been a serious renovation, it was truly an awful room a few years ago. But I had a blast, go figure.

Living here I would never suggest staying downtown. If it is cheaper rooms you need try South Point or M Resort and shuttle downtown.

We also voted Taco Bell for Best Mexican Restaurant a few years ago.

I sau the Nugget. Rooms are nice and they just spent alot of money upgrading the whole facility. I was there last June and it was nice.

The Nugget just finished more expansion/renovation a couple of months back. It's a great place to stay. They've done a great job with it.

Yeah, but it's their first Vegas trip. I'd talk them into visiting downtown but not stay there. Hell, might as well just fly to Reno for a night.

I dunno, maybe they're like I was on my first trip, for better or worse downtown "felt like" Vegas. Or what I wanted Vegas to feel like. Or something.

Granted, I doubt the downtown of today even feels like it did when I went the first time, what, 15 years ago? And I'm sure what I saw then wasn't really what I thought it was either, but if I squinted a little at times and didn't think about the light show overhead, it was what I was looking for.

Seeing Vegas Vic (even with new clothes), watching the neon on the Plaza, comp drinks strong enough to make even nickel slot players' eyes water, that's the non-Rat Pack Vegas I had in my head . It's the one that's still in my heart as a visitor too I guess, the feeling I'd want again.

Rollercoasters around casinos & massive construction built to look like some famous international landmark has it's place & can be entertaining in its own way, but it's not why I'd go to Vegas.

I totally agree - I prefer downtown straight up, with the cost savings, it's a no brainer.

It's nice to have the strip close, so I can shoot there for something specific, like a restaraunt or show. But if I'm just wandering around, downtown just feels like I want Vegas to be. Cheap plentiful booze, chaos, music, lights, deep fried oreos, etc.
