Coldplay...a bunch of hacks
The lawsuit Satriani has brought is going to really knock Coldplay down. They ripped his music off and really weren't even bashful about hiding it.

Didn't some other artist recently file a plagiarism suit against Coldplay, too?
I just listened to both songs on Youtube and, while the melodies do sound similar, especially at one certain point, I'm not sure this is "really [going to] knock Coldplay down."

I really doubt this is going to bring Coldplay down. It happens a lot in music, and I wouldn't say they 'weren't bashful' about it. It's extremely easy to play something, or play off of something you've heard before without ever really thinking about it. They could have intentionally done it, but the similarities aren't quite 'Ice Ice Baby' proportions.
Not to mention, people like Timbaland have made their whole careers off stealing other people's material. |

I bet Satch gets some money.
Huey Lewis lost against Ray Parker Jr. The Verve lost against The Stones.

As much as I don't get into Coldplay and like Joe, I think Joe is going to have a hard time with this one. The part is certainly there, but probably not enough for a case.

i used to LOVE Coldplay, now i just like them. they're too full of themselves. i'm tired of Chris Martin. i think i heard he's thinking of retiring or disbanding or something. i heard his collaboration with Kenye West ("homecoming" i think it's called) and i didn't like it. if he's leaving Coldplay to put out shit like that then no one will remember Chris Martin 10 years from now or he'll be David Lee Roth in about a decade. fucking doofus, thinking just cuz he struck it big with Coldplay that everything he touches in life is gonna turn into gold.

I don't usually buy into these lawsuits, but I heard a clip of the original from the "other artist" don't know his name, and thought it was a studio recording or a demo of the Coldplay song - I mean it was practically identical.
As if that wasn't enough, the guy that;s suing (not Satriani) produced pictures from one of his pub gigs 2-3 years ago with the Coldplay front man in the audience. Busted. |

The only damning part was that the producers went to Huey Lewis first. If they hadn't, I don't think the suit would have ever been filed. Can you imagine the lawsuits we'd have if artists were suing each other for using similar beats? |

it's not the fact that they're "similar repetive beats", it's the fact that Who You Gonna Call uses essentially the exact beat AND melody. pop in I Want A New Drug and you can sing Who You Gonna Call over it. that's different than just having similar beats. funny thing about this - the classic rock group Cream ripped themselves off. "White Room" uses basically the same music from "Tales Of A Brave Ulysses". you can sing White Room over most of "Tales". i don't know why this isn't talked about more. |

I wish someone would make an entire album of Joeplay mashups. I really kind of like the combo.

There was a infamous mashup of Nickleback songs done side by side to show just how much of a hack the band was. Neither band sued themselves and thus that's why neither case got that well known. CCR vs. John Folgerty, however, did get press since he was being sued for basically ripping off himself via his old band mates. |

LOL!!!
i found this comment in one of the youtube clips: Chris Martin stated it was not plagiarism because 1. Could not have been him at Creaky Boards concert as was working in London that night. 2. The song was a work in progress for 7 months prior to that time. 3. Song was stolen from 2004 Joe Satriani song and not from Creaky Boards. |

OTOH, I think having two bands claim that Coldplay ripped them off works in Coldplay's favor. Basically the beat is common enough that it could have come from more than one source.

Sorta telling: 2 musician and engineer forums I belong to have this going in Joe's favor. We all seem to agree that the similarities are pretty spot on in terms of melody. Not saying that is the right answer.

I honestly thought Coldplay was doing an English cover of that Alizee song the first time I heard Viva La Vida.

Won't Coldplay have to pay U2 before they pay anybody else?
