Not trying to be mean or anything, but I had no idea he was still alive.

I think I remember his voice as a little kid. 1980,81? Was that around when he retired?

March 6, 1981.

An audience of 36 million watched that last broadcast, about double his regular average. By comparison, about 18-19 million watched all three network nightly newscasts combined in July.

As you can pretty well imagine, I don't share much philosophically with Cronkite when it comes to issues but from a professional perspective, I'm not really sure how you even try to eulogize this guy without sounding about 100 millions miles short.

He was the first person ever dubbed an "anchorman" and as AP notes in their obit tonight he came so identified in that role that eventually his own name became the term for the job in other languages. (Swedish anchors are known as Kronkiters; In Holland, they are Cronkiters.)

Driven almost to the point of being a fault at times, witty, an abundance of natural curiosity, and an uncanny knack for being both authoritative and relatable at the same time.

A double blow to be sure so soon after the loss of Paul Harvey, another legend that I don't believe we'll ever really see the likes of again.

And that's the way he was on July 17, 2009. RIP Mr. Cronkite.

I have distinct childhood memories of Walter Cronkite speaking and all of my adult relatives stopping to listen. He's the only person I can say that about (from either my childhood or adulthood), and I'm not sure he could be paid a grander compliment.

RIP, Walter.

He'll be buried next to his wife today here in Kansas City. Some big names in news in town this week.

Discovery is repeating a series of shows they did with Cronkite a few years back, basically him intro & talking about various events that occurred during his career.

Been some very interesting stuff, a few funny moments, and some footage that I don't recall having seen (including his visit with Truman at the White House after a major renovation, can't believe I hadn't seen clips of that before).

Should have posted this earlier I guess as I imagine it's about over but it's been pretty good stuff.
