Michael Crabtree to 49'ers: Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em

From PFT.

As we continue to wait for a puff of white smoke to emerge from a Bay Area chimney, a pair of really big gold pants has been raised up the flag pole.

Per Matt Maiocco of the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat, aging and largely irrelevant '90s rap star M.C. Hammer was present for Tuesday's meeting between receiver Michael Crabtree and the 49ers.

So for the first time since Master P handled the negotiations of Ricky Williams' rookie contract with the Saints, an entertainer apparently is trying to get his fingerprints onto an NFL deal.

It wouldn't be Hammer's first flirtation with the NFL. Way back in '91, he was a derby-and-cane fixture at Falcons games, at the behest of cornerback Deion Sanders.

They later collaborated on a song, "Straight to My Feet."

And Maiocco recalls that Hammer lived in Deion's Fremont, California in 1994, his only season with the 49ers.

Sanders, of course, was represented by Crabtree's agent, Eugene Parker, and Sanders has injected himself into the middle of the present mess by suggesting that multiple teams had tampered with Crabtree by offering him twice the money that the 49ers had placed on the table.

It's unclear what Hammer's role, if any, might be. But Maiocco points out that an employee at the hotel where the meeting occurred said that Crabtree was heard telling Hammer, "Get it done."

Maybe that's he name of the song that will launch Hammer's latest attempt at a comeback.

Crabtree will have a cameo in the video. Along with Larry the Cable Guy.

And ESPN is now reporting that Crabtree is 2 Legit 2 To Quit and has signed with the 49ers.

In other news, there has still been no Tone Loc sightings, although there was an unconfirmed "Funky Cold Medina" remake seen:

If this deal somehow involves the 49ers producing a new Hammer album - I'm glad a deal got done.

Reportedly it's a 6 year deal. I really don't understand this - though no monetary details are available, the original offer was 5 years at $16M guaranteed. I can't imagine that the Niners gave him more than $3M for that sixth year...why would he hold out for more money, then lock himself into a ridiculously long rookie contract?

I believe I read that the 6th year is a team option year, so it is essentially a 5 year deal unless he performs like a beast, then the team will get a 6th year for cheap.

MC Hammer is involved in the negotiations.

Also, Crabtree is an idiot.

The team insisted on a potential 6th year because at least half of his first year is down the terlet.

Nah, its voidable with certain performance clauses (in this case, tying your shoelaces before every game). If he's worth a shit, this is a five year deal. The 6th is so Crabtree/Parker can pump up the total announced value of the contract and save some face.

That's why I called it a "potential" 6th year.

"Mythical" would be a better description.

Welp, the 49ers have crabs, it's all down hill from there on.

He'll be holding out within 2 years, so any discussions of 5th+ year are premature at best.

That's a concern with damn near every WR anyway.

And to DeTox, this is the second time I've seen you use that apostrophe.

I'll go ahead and say in 2 years he'll either be holding out or cut from the team. Thus the 2nd half of this contract is complete fantasy.

I'm pretty sure the hotel employee misheard the conversation. Surely Craptree said "Break it down!"

Nope. The 49er's actually got some kind of option bonus that is forfeited if he holds out after two years. It's a relatively new contract term for NFL contracts.
