I am the Corporate Director of Information Security for one of the largest Real Estate Investment Trust firms in the US. My infosecurity and IT infrastructure engineers would say more of how Jeff describes it though.LOL.
I will second Jeff's suggestion on getting your CISSP. I worked my way up from the Air Force to lower IT Security roles mostly consulting and also as an IT Security auditor at one point. I got my Master of Science in Information Security and my CISSP, CISM, AND CCSP.

I'll add to the line of Geeks here. I'm the IT director of relatively small subsidiary of a publicly traded company. I got my roots doing C development, and having a head for analysis and design. That lead me to a role as an Oracle DBA -> project manager ->manager -> director.

I'm still most at home when weighing in on the technical design of projects, but I do have to admit all of the Director stuff is pretty interesting.

I am a Meter Reader for Pacific Gas & Electric Company. It's pretty much the most amazing job ever. It's not as much fun as when I used to teach (working with children is extremely rewarding), but the pay is insane, the work is easy (except for the dogs), and when I'm off the clock, I have nothing to worry about. Sadly, the job is going away in the next year or so due to automation - Smart Meters that read themselves are the new wave.

I work for the state of Oklahoma as a Disabled Veteran's Outreach Program Specialist (DVOP), which is one of two types of veteran employment representatives. I help veterans with employment barriers such as a disability find work in the area they want to get into and also help with referrals to veteran organizations for applying for VA disability and other programs. I really like the job because I get to help my fellow veterans.

Okay guys after sitting down with the local community college computer science department i am even more confused. I had been working on finishing my A.S. degree but after meeting with one of the department heads she gave us some info on their AAS in network admin (along with some other focuses like Web and programming). After doing some more research it appears that the AAS does not necessarily transfer in full to a four year degree. My question is for those that know what Illinois schools have good computer degrees? What does an AAS degree mean for me when i am out in the working world trying to get my degree? Does the Cisco certification mean much for me? I will admit i am very confused of course because looking at the AAS is not the same as trying to figure out the AS transferring to a 4 year college.

I work for the 2nd largest cable provider in the US as a technical trainer. Basically I train anyone that is involved in the technical side of our business as well as our business class department. Technicians, dispatch, sales, etc. I also work on a lot of special projects to help people understand how our technologies work, since making things make sense is one of my specialties. Most of my technical training revolves around high speed data and digital phone services.

I'm actually getting pretty bored of the training game, been in training for about 3 years now, and I'd like to get back to a more hands on job with technology again...

By job title, I am a Realtor. I have never officially helped someone buy or sell a home yet though and when I do it won't be because I was really trying that hard. Most of my time is spent doing what are called Broker Price Opinions or Comparative Market Analysis. Basically inspections and reports on homes for asset management companies and/or lenders when they want an idea of market value of a property when someone is in default of their mortgage or refinancing. I do end up talking to a lot of buyers, and show a house once in a while, but I try to hand that stuff off to the wife when possible because she is better at that and it's better for us on the commission side of things.

I also do a website for a (very) little cash each month, and am still looking at doing two more for local companies.

Do I like my job? Yes and no. The inspections and reports are fun, and sometimes the picture taking is an adventure (car chase, woohoo!). The actual duties of a Realtor I am not all that thrilled by. I am not a big fan of working with my wife. I love the fact that I set my own hours, which often means going to sleep at 5 A.M. after a round of gaming. I am able to be home all the time. Seeing the little things my almost 3 month old son does every day which I didn't see when my daughter was growing up. Coaching my daughter's soccer team, watching her play volleyball. Doing all this stuff, every day with my kids, is the best part.

Overall, the kids win out. If I didn't have kids I would be on a truck still. It is a great job, I loved the life. In fact until I found out we were having a second kid I had already been planning on getting back on a truck in 8 years. Not happening now. I really do miss it but life goes on, I am still pretty damn happy I guess.

Before that I worked for a regional environmental organization. Before that I did a bunch of other things including copy-editing, translating from Hungarian to English, teaching ESL, voice-over, college admin... Basically, I'm the guy that moved oversees after college, and every time you run into his sister you get a confusing update on what exactly he's doing. But now there's Facebook and all those people realize I'm the same guy as before, just in Budapest.

Official title is "Systems Analyst" for a small school district...about 6000 kids and 600 staff in total. I've been here going on 8 years now and essentially started out as the guy turning screwdrivers fixing workstations but now have a hand in just about every facet of the network except for the workstations.

The job is basically trying to protect the teachers from themselves because they always want more and more freedom but don't want to be responsible for the consequences that come with that freedom. Even trickier is to get the senior executive to understand the risks of doing whatever the teachers want us to do...because they are all former teachers. There are some very trying days at the office, let me tell you. If I didn't give a crap about what happens to the kids in our schools this job would be a lot easier.

I've been leaning towards looking elsewhere but the benefits, pay, and security are very nice considering my wife is currently able to stay home with our two young kids without us having to make too many sacrifices. But at the same time a former boss who I liked working for has called several times with very competitive offers in the private sector and each time it gets harder to say no.

Decisions, decisions.

I work for my father in the family business. I spend my days doing hyrdo-static testing on tanks (CO2 tanks, O2 tanks, SCBA bottles and SCUBA tanks mostly), and sometimes doing fire extinguisher inspections and refilling CO2 tanks. Yes, it's as glamorous as it sounds.

I'm 99% sure I will be adding something that is far more interesting in the near future.

So after all my praise for my place (which still stands). I just put my notice in and am getting back into consulting. More money, more growth and more choices. More fun.

My current position was as good as it can be for an internal Network Engineer job. I just wasn't ready to grind it out. Looking forward to get back into the consulting world, was missing it.

I manage an enterprise-level configuration management IT shop that is responsible for keeping a metric ass-ton of MS machines standardized with OS and software updates (MS or 3rd party)...we also monitor all of our server's health which can be a real pain in the ass.

(I love this job but I'd rather being riding a motorcycle all morning, drinking beers with Obama in the afternoon to explain how he could do things better, and then messing with my MP FOF league in the evening.)

More money, more growth and more choices. More fun. My current position was as good as it can be for an internal Network Engineer job. I just wasn't ready to grind it out. Dutch "Dutch" Join Date: Oct 2000 Location: Tampa, FL	I manage an enterprise-level configuration management IT shop that is responsible for keeping a metric ass-ton of MS machines standardized with OS and software updates (MS or 3rd party)...we also monitor all of our server's health which can be a real pain in the ass. (I love this job but I'd rather being riding a motorcycle all morning, drinking beers with Obama in the afternoon to explain how he could do things better, and then messing with my MP FOF league in the evening.)
