Thursday, September 1st, 2050: Best Pitcher Picked by Republic League
Whether Chua chay Chao stays in Ann Arbor beyond this season remains to be seen, but while he's here he's making the most of it. In August the 32-year-old certainly pulled out all the stops by winning the Republic League Pitcher of the Month award.

He put up some fancy numbers with a 5-0 record and and an ERA of 1.31. In 48 innings he struck out 39, surrendered 30 hits, 7 walks and proved to be a solid performer in 6 starts last month.

This season Chao has compiled a 16-9 record with a 3.46 ERA.

Thursday, September 1st, 2050: Aitken Gets August's Top Pitcher Trophy
Capping off a whirlwind month in which he went 7-0 with a 1.17 ERA, Jeremy Aitken was selected as August's Continental League Pitcher of the Month today. Reporters caught up with the elated Tokyo starter as he left the clubhouse.

"I know it's difficult for pitchers -- when you have a bad start or two, people start wondering if you've lost it. Then you ride stretches like this one for all you can. You find it easier to come to the park every day because know you're contributing to the club, not just waiting for your turn in the rotation to make up for your last start."

Jeremy Aitken definitely contributed to the club. He had 7 starts, throwing 54 innings, striking out 52, and holding the opposition to a .195 average.

In 32 starts this season, Aitken has picked up 19 wins while suffering 6 losses. He has pitched 223 innings, allowed 200 hits, struck out 233 and posted a 3.19 ERA.

Thursday, September 1st, 2050: Watanabe Snags RL Batting Honor in August
On the heels of a very productive August, Eiichi Watanabe received Republic League Batter of the Month recognition today.

The battle-tested third baseman hit .402 for the Hammersmith Hooligans and racked up 8 home runs, 27 RBIs and 27 runs scored.

To date this year Watanabe is batting .349 with 29 home runs.

Thursday, September 1st, 2050: Torrid August Gets Beltrán CL #1 Batter Trophy
His solid numbers speak for themselves. That's why Luis Beltrán of the Tokyo Cyclones was named the Continental League's best batter in August.

The Tokyo left fielder starred with a .358 batting average, 8 home runs and 25 RBIs.

For 2050 Beltrán is hitting .305 with 28 home runs. His stats include 100 RBIs and 93 runs scored.

Thursday, September 1st, 2050: RL Names Martínez Best Rookie
None of the pitchers could figure him out last month. António Martínez was pure poison to them, lashing out hits with in such abundance he was voted the latest Republic League Rookie of the Month.

In August he hit the ball at a .350 clip, popping off 35 hits and 1 home run with 12 RBIs and scoring 19 runs.

Hyannis opponents have to be thinking about pitching around this guy until he cools off a bit.

This year Martínez is batting .320 with 7 home runs.

Thursday, September 1st, 2050: August's #1 Rookie Named by CL
Rob Wharton let his numbers do the talking in August. The Apex Assassins left fielder logged a .265 average as he laid claim to the Continental League Rookie of the Month Award.

He tallied 26 hits, 7 home runs, drove in 14 runs and scored 13 runs during his remarkable stretch.

In 125 games this season Wharton has compiled a .274 batting average with 120 hits and 19 home runs. He has also scored 60 times and knocked in 73 runs.

Tuesday, September 13th, 2050: Okamoto Goes Cycling
Chico knew that Hitomaro Okamoto of the New York Heroes was a great player, but they still couldn't stop him today. Okamoto had 4 hits with 4 runs batted in and 3 runs scored in the 13-9 New York win and thrilled the fans by hitting for the cycle.

"Great players do great things," the right fielder said after the game, "I just did what I'm expected to do. Still, it's a nice accomplishment to add to the list."

H. Okamoto hit an RBI double in the 1st, grounded out in the 2nd, hit an RBI single in the 4th, tripled in the 7th, hit a two-run home run off J. Flores in the 8th and flied out in the 9th.

Thus far this season in 137 games Okamoto is batting .301 with 34 home runs, 116 RBIs and 104 runs scored. He has 170 hits in 564 at-bats.

Friday, September 23rd, 2050: Cyclones Hurler Reaches Milestone
Tokyo's Jeremy Aitken took the hill at Sony Park today in search of his 250th career win.
The 33-year-old ace found it against the Apex Assassins.

He worked 6 innings with 5 strikeouts and no walks in the 5-4 victory, checking Apex on 2 hits.

"It a big milestone in my career," admitted Aitken. "When you get close to it, you worry about it a lot. It's done now... and I can relax and enjoy it."

Saturday, October 1st, 2050: September's #1 Starter Named in RL
Last month was a very good one for Mike Larson of Hartford. So good that he has been picked as the Pitcher of the Month in the Republic League.

Larson throttled league hitters the entire month, completing September with an impressive 4-0 mark and a 2.66 ERA in 5 starts with 17 strikeouts in 40.2 innings.

In the 2050 season Larson has recorded a 16-10 mark. In 31 starts he has fanned 101 batters in 208 innings with a 3.63 ERA.

Saturday, October 1st, 2050: Continental League Picks Best Starter in September
The Newark Terriers owe Vernon Woods a lot for his performance this past month. One of the league's most dominant starters in September, Woods tore up the opposition with a fine 5-1 mark on his way to the Continental League Pitcher of the Month award.

"When you're pitching this well," analyzed Woods, "it's a lot easier to come to the park. I don't judge my performance by the stats, I judge it -- the team judges it -- by the score of the game. I could say I'm tossing electric stuff right now and that would go over big. But if I toss that same stuff -- exact same pitch selection and location -- and they bang me around tomorrow, I was awful. That's the way baseball is."

It was Woods who did the banging in September as he tossed up 43 strikeouts in 45 innings, holding opponents to a .223 average and posting a 2.80 ERA.

So far in 2050 Woods has compiled a 19-12 record with a 3.63 ERA.

Saturday, October 1st, 2050: RL's Best Batter Picked
Will Hawkins, the Colorado center fielder, had a productive month in September. He put up some solid numbers with a .386 batting average (44 for 114), 10 home runs, 31 RBIs and 31 runs scored.

That standout offense earned him the Republic League Batter of the Month Trophy.

Hawkins is swinging at a .342 pace on the year with 40 home runs, 139 RBIs and 134 runs scored. He has played in 152 games.

Saturday, October 1st, 2050: José Romo Winner in September
José Romo mauled enemy pitching all month long as he cruised to the Continental League Batter of the Month title.

Romo batted .349 with 9 home runs, 33 RBIs and 25 runs scored.

Napa Valley faithful hope for an encore in October!

Romo is batting .285 this season in 149 games with 34 home runs, 113 RBIs and 111 runs scored. He has 162 hits in 568 at-bats.

He just had a bunch of 40+ home run seasons all in a row and they eventually added up. I never really think of him much in the way of power numbers just as an all around great player. He did have the second most home runs in a season just 2 seasons ago with 57 though.

Saturday, October 1st, 2050: Martínez Selected September's Top Newcomer
The Republic League's Rookie of the Month is António Martínez of Hyannis.

In September the second baseman ravaged pitchers for a .320 BA, 32 hits, 1 home run, 10 RBIs, scored 13 runs and walked 7 times for a .373 on-base percentage.

During the 2050 season Martínez has hit .320 with 8 home runs and 80 RBIs. He has played in 151 games and scored 75 times.

Saturday, October 1st, 2050: López Voted September's Best CL Rookie
Whenever Assassins third baseman Eduardo López stepped into the batter's box last month, the 25-year-old meant business. With his .266 average he virtually ran away with the Continental League Rookie of the Month Award.

He collected 25 hits in September with 4 home runs, 19 RBIs and 13 runs scored.

This season-to-date López has 26 home runs and a .276 batting average.

Sunday, October 2nd, 2050: Heroes Snap Caster's Streak at 30
All good things must come to an end -- and so it was today for Aaron Caster as he saw his 30-game hitting streak end. He went hitless in 4 at-bats at the hands of the Heroes. It wasn't all bad for the 27-year-old right fielder and the Chico Rebels, as they defeated New York 14-3 at Rebels Ballpark.

When asked about his hitting streak, a smiling Caster laughed and said, "I guess my luck ran out today."

Caster is batting at a .321 pace in 2050, picking up 221 hits in 689 at-bats with 42 home runs, 135 RBIs and 133 runs scored.

Tokyo is a big fat liar about his mediocrity this season and I'm not sure we can be friends this season...

Walt 'Groundhog' Conrad of the Chico Rebels ties the great Ryuichi Hasegawa's 39 year old record for shutouts pitched in a season with 7!!

The FOOL Home Run King finishes the season with 44 Home Runs, the fourth straight season with 40+ Homers. He finishes with the all time record of 622 Home Runs in a career! He still obviously has quite alot of pop in his bat, at the age of 35, can he make it to 700?? He currently is not signed to a contract extension, will he even be playing in New York next season?

Congratulations to my fellow playoff participants.

I really didn't think Tokyo had enough, but I guess I'm sort of clueless after the break as to where everyone stands in the league mix.

I had a good feeling about this season, getting back to the playoffs after taking last season off. Glad to see it worked out. I had noticed during the offseason how many top players Chico signed. It looks like it really worked out for them. They will be a tough matchup for me.

Of course, it's the playoffs, so everyone's a tough matchup for me.

Still, Chico looks good.

Good luck to all the playoff participants tomorrow.

P.S. Damn, ditto on Okamoto, that's nuts, how did we not notice his approach to this hallowed record?

If we could have just had some starting pitching worth a darn, we'd have made some real noise. I didn't think we had anything, but as I was putting things together Monday, I saw that we had the bats, but just not the starters. Gotta love the false early hope there.

The Edge had a great season (well, a GOOD season at least) and this is going to be a fun ride. My first season wasn't as good as I'd hoped but it was better for the Edge.

From last season, the Edge gained two places in the league(4th place), 9 victories (82-80 finish), and gained 7 games on the first place team.

Pitching was a problem but had some highlights. 39 year old Chun-mei Joo went 17-6 for 3.20 ERA and passed both the 200 Win and 3000 K marks.
New closer Yeijiro Murakami got 31 saves. Only two other good pitchers on the staff Colon and Baena who led a good bullpen. Need...um....*cough* STARTERS!

Outfield was newly bought and outstanding although the expectations were higher. Joe Cannon led the dings with 33HR and 115 RBI but had a mere .264 avg and only 6 SB. Why are my fast players not stealing bases? He's stolen lots before but this year 10. The team strategy is set correctly too. Ah well. Four solid oufielders continue into the next season in Cannon, Barrow (21 HR 104RBI), Richmond (16/80) and RIchards. With four OF that work will one of them be traded? Does ANYONE need a good OF?

A tremendous infield also prevailed, but the Edge will lose 1b Boucher and 2b Martinez to free agency.

Recognition for the year goes to those selected for this year's All-Star Game: SP Joo, RF Burrow, 2B Martinez, and SS Nunez. Cnnon tried to break into the locker room before the game hoping no one would notice but was later escorted out by security.
SP Guo-dong Ge pitched a shutout. LF Jow "Wall" Cannon DID take home 2 player of the month trophies for May and July (HOw did he not make the All-Star game again?) Raul Nunez got the Rookie of the month award in May.

Good luck to Tokyo and Napa Valley in the Playoffs!
