I tried that in a Legion game when I was 17. The catcher (who ended up playing in the Cubs system for awhile) blocked the plate well and came up the line. I had no choice, so I tried to jump over him. I couldn't do a somersault, but I did get some good air...save for me kicking off his skull cap.
Needless to say, I was called out for not sliding, and the other team's coach tried to have me kicked out of the game (I was pitching a shutout at the time). Ah, what memories. Now all I do is tweak my hip when I try to pitch. WTF is up with that? |

The amazing thing is that he had less than a second to decide to do that, and the form was perfect.

I freezed-frame it and the catcher clearly stuck his right elbow up, probably as a defensive jesture. Ball didn't come close to tagging the leaper. Nice play.

My favorite part of the whole thing? The pitcher backing up raising his fist for the "out" call, and then losing his mind when the umpire calls the player safe.
Yeah, I hate it THAT MUCH when players pull that crap. I don't care if it's instinctive, or if they're trying to influence the official. It bugs the snot out of me, and it makes me oh so happy when a player is made to look like a fool after doing that. |

Fucking awesome play, catcher was down too low to even come close to a tag. Awesomeness.

I swear some MLB guy did this some years ago, for some reason I'm thinking Jason Kendall was involved. It was basically my fantasy throughout legion baseball (would've been crucified by the high school coach, but knew I could get away with trying it in legion), but the opportunity never came.

What an incredible play! The opposing manager should send the umpire a formal apology for yelling and complaining for so long.

I did that once to a 3B. I actually jumped over him and hit the bag, but kept going and I was tagged out.
