An Interesting "fair" election ruling
Because a predominantly Hispanic community never managed to elect any Hispanic leadership, a judge declares that the few Hispanics that do vote, get to each vote six times, even for the same candidate.
I'm still struggling with this one. I couldn't make something like this up |

Sounds like you get 6 votes for the 6 open seats, and you can apportion them however you want - 1 vote for 6 different people, or 6 votes for one person.
Not that insane (although not common practice at all).

Nothing new. Chicago has been doing that for years.

And EVERYONE gets 6 votes. The hispanic voter gets 6 votes and the white voter gets 6 votes.

That sure will make for some interesting campaign strategy.

Nah, that was a dead guy voting 6 times, not Hispanics. Well, unless it was a Hispanic dead guy SI

Ahhh. Now that I'll buy. That is fair. I wondered how this had hit the wire two days ago, and hadn't blown up yet. I was suckered in by my reactionary friend's account, and that apparently prejudiced my reading. |

That's an outright lie - everyone gets 6 votes, not just Hispanic voters. There is no racism here. Last edited by Crapshoot : 06-16-2010 at 12:51 PM. |

Definitely everyone getting 6 votes, basically from the quote given - they've decided that hispanics are more likely to vote for hispanic candidates and that will focus their votes while other ethnicities will have a more divided vote between their larger candidate base.
Problem with that is that if that was the case then surely it'd be the same even if each person had a single vote? .... plus screwing around with a system purely because you're not happy with the outcome being what you wanted sure as heck doesn't seem democratic to me (and its interesting to note that it DOES seem to be the case that it was changed purely because someone decided there should be more hispanic representation). So we're counting on Hispanic racism here?

Maybe it's counting that's been the problem all along?

Maybe just semantics here, but while I was wrong about the very essence of what this judge's ruling was, I never played the racism card. You can argue that I played the "Rampant Political Correctness - Overcompensating for Perceived Injustice" card, but not the racist card. I don't think even my original understanding/portrayal of the issue could lead to a claim of racism. I just thought the judge was misguided.
Admittedly he wasn't as misguided as me, as I forced myself to look past my misgivings of how exactly the ruling as I understood it would work. I just SO wanted to break news here on FOFC. |
