Why isn't there a racing text sim?

I know this has been thrown around in the past but recently this has started to bug me. Of all the sports that there isn't a text sim of, racing of some sort (F1, Nascar, etc) seems like it would be one that could really be special. Everything from having racing teams to even a multiplayer leagues it's seems like it could be a really kick ass type of game.

I know there was someone working on a racing sim at one time anyone know what the status is on that?

Too hard to do well enough to suit the most passionate fans, not enough interest among casual gamers who would be satisifed with less, too fragmented a marketplace globally vs the US, and I've long suspected a significant shortage of developers who understand it well enough to even begin to do it justice.

One of the main reasons there isn't one is simply the cost of the licences involved (at least for F1, no idea about NASCAR).

There was one called F1CM in development independantly for ages (I think its still 'going' but under a new name now) - looked promising but I don't think they ever managed to released it because of the licencing issues.

But can't you create a generic game that allows for import/editing? Or is that not allowed. I don't think that many text sim people would frown on that.

Someone could probably .... but it'd be a 'niche' game if created in that manner ... a LOT of users like seeing the real data without having to expend 'real' effort to get it

NASCAR loves to throw around cease and desists. I have a friend that runs http://nnracing.com that has gotten two (one of which required him to change his domain name)

No, people want to expend a lot of energy modding FOF, but have no friggin' clue how to.

It's less than 30 drivers and 15ish team names...

Unless you go deeper with engine names, tyre names, manager names, etc.

I think the activity of this thread should give you a hint to your answer.

It's called Grand Prix Racing Manager now (gprm.co.uk) and they're in Beta stages right now. They made the teams and drivers generic to get around the licensing stuff. Not sure which season of F1 they are going by as far as the rules are concerned but it may actually get done one of these days!

They have been in beta for like 6 years or more so i have lost my hope.

I really enjoyed F1 Grand Prix Manager 1 and 2 like 10 years ago, despite the bugs, and for sure would buy a new F1 sim if developed.

scratch that, you can apparently load any of the mods and play it on it´s own (no need to load the base game first)

direct link to 2009 : http://www.gpm2world.com/?file_id=41

really loved that game back in the day, this and (on the self-driving side of things) the Grand Prix series . Played the heck out of GP2 as a kid, driving whole real time races and everything.
On the verge of reinstalling it right now ...

Never played GP2, but played the hell out of the first one. I bet if I fired it up now I could still hit every braking and turn in point for all the courses.

My point is FOF ships with the St Luois Monarchs as a team.
just as easily as you oul have a Hick Jendrix racing with Daddy Wasagreatdriver Jr. driving one of his cars....

Wouldn't a NASCAR text sim require NASCAR fans to learn what those texty ciphers mean?

I have no clue how good it is, but a racing team management sim called Pole Position 2010 that is now available on Impulse:
http://www.impulsedriven.com/position2010

They're even running a sale, 15% off for the weekend, on sale at $16.99.

This would be a blast if we could get someone here at FOFC to host a server. Then we could race against one another.

I enjoy it regularly anyway, but I don't kno0w anyone I'm racing against.

don't know if anyone ever tried the game, but Impulse has it at 50% off this weekend, or for sale at $9.99.
