According to Buster Olney the Astros are picking up most of his salary for this year and next and getting back no one really worth mentioning.

Then why make the trade? These GM's are becoming so stupid if that's the case.

Drayton McLane stepped in and forced Ed Wade to deal Oswalt and Berkman is what I've read.

When your owner forces a deal to be made this is what you end up with.

Berkman apparently vetoed a trade to the White Sox too, which may have hamstrung them from getting anything of value for him.

Big hit by Heyward to give the Braves a two run lead in the tenth inning. Prado might have injured himself on the slide at home plate, hopefully he's okay...

I've been wondering what the hell Soto could have possibly done to be banished to the 7 or 8 spot in the lineup every night despite a .900+ OPS.

Damn... Colorado has scored 12 runs in one inning against the Cubs. And still going. I think I heard the guy say they have 11 straight hits.

Although as an Angels fan, Cuban owning the Rangers would be bad for my team, I would welcome a win at all costs guy like that to baseball, and have always liked Cuban as an owner in the NBA. Plus, anyone who follows Moreno knows he doesn't like to lose, and he also has plenty of cash. So if Cuban joins up and ups the ante in Texas, guaranteed, Moreno's going all in, too. That will make the AL West much more interesting.

Speaking of interesting, wild game out here in Anaheim vs the Rangers.

By scoring half innings...

Rangers 3, Angels 0
Rangers 5, Angels 0
Rangers 5, Angels 4
Rangers 7, Angels 4
Angels 8, Rangers 7

...and we're only in the fifth.

If the Jackson for Dunn thing has any truth to it at all (and Buster Olney is reporting the Nats told multiple teams the same thing and multiple teams were trying to get Jackson) that's a major dbag move and breach of etiquette. We'll see how it plays out but right now the White Sox traded their best prospect for a guy they didn't want.

If true it's also the kind of thing that will bite the Nats in the ass big time as they will have multiple GM's gunning for them. I don't see how you could continue dealing in good faith with a team if they pulled a stunt like this.

Doumit is one of those switch hitters that needs to give up. I'd say his catching skills are 30/80

The Nats have not shopped Dunn at all and will only move him if teams come with blowaway offers. This mostly bullshit by the White Sox since the Nats told them it would take Hudson/Viciedo to get Dunn.

The Nats just did the classy thing and moved two of their tradeable pieces to teams that have real playoff chances and got good return. Other than a few asshat talking head media jackoffs no one has had anything negative to say about dealing with Rizzo.

Oh, I get it - a bunch of teams are posturing, giving the exact same information to multiple people, but your team is not. Gotcha!

The Cardinals are on the verge of acquiring Jake Westbrook from the Tribe. No word yet on who they're sending the other way.

Ryan Ludwick to the Padres?

I like this. Ludwick is a FA. Jay jas been a spark to the team. And as inconsistent as the team has been, may as well get something for one of those bats.

Seems to be a good trade all around. Cards get a good (4th best on their team?) starter... Pads get an OFer they needed, which Cards could afford to ship (Jon Jay becomes the everyday RFer, batting .396 in ~150 PAs), and Tribe gets some 'spects.

Lets go Reds. Lets get Hanley Ramirez and Ichiro.

Cards get Westbrook and prospect Nick Greenwood from SD
Padres get Ludwick
Indians get a better prospect from the Padres in AA pitcher Corey Kluber.

All in all, the Cards made out pretty well. Westbrook's a ground-ball guy and those pitchers usually do very well under Duncan. If he has a 4.65 ERA in Cleveland, I'd be surprised if he wasn't in the mid-3s for the Cards. Not bad for a 4th starter.

DBacks made a "ho-hum" move in the Snyder trade. He had been terrible (and makes $6 mil) and they moved Snyder and a minor league SS no one has heard of for a decent reliever (Carrasco) and two veteran hitters batting around the mendoza line (Bobby Crosby and Ryan Church). Looks like the DBacks just wanted the bullpen arm and to unload Snyder's $6 mil, taking on the other two as salaries (combined $2.5 mil).

Edit: Arizona's also sending cash - so it may end up being a wash financially with Carrasco going to the DBacks and Snyder to the Pirates as the main pieces.

I wish they could dump him, rather than platoon him. He cannot catch the ball, whether he is behind the plate, at first base or in the outfield. And, for a player with such mediocre skills and accomplishments, he seems to get hurt several times a season and he speaks out to the media a little too often for my liking.

The Pirates front office gets knocked around a lot but they have, for the most part, sold too early rather than too late of late (Nady, Bay, Wilson, Sanchez, McClouth, etc.). Doumit is someone that they probably could have gotten a good haul for in the early part of last season.

Hopefully, the Pirates got a little cash in the deal, although I think Snyder only has one more guaranteed year on his deal. I'm cool with them getting a serviceable catcher, even if his bat seems to be deteriorating, to bridge them until Tony Sanchez is ready. Sanchez was tearing it up and progressing through the system well, but got hit in the face and is likely out for the rest of the season.

Getting Doumit out from behind the plate and getting rid of Church, who the Pirates just would not release for some reason, is reason enough for this deal from my perspective.

Reading comprehension.

Gammons reported that sources inside the Rays were convinced that Dunn was going to the Yankees. He did not report that Dunn was going to the Yankees. If anyone was wrong, it was whomever in the Rays thought Dunn to the Yankees was going to happen.

I'm kind of hoping the Bucs can flip Octavio Dotel, even if we have to pay his salary, into something decent. He had a rough patch at the beginning of the season, but has been pitching really well since May. Seems like he could be a good set up man for a contender.

The local AZ beat guy said that Church/Crosby are expiring guys to make up what was still owed to Snyder. They like Carrasco for next year (arb guy) and are paying Pitt around $3 mil of the $6.5 he's owed next year.

All in all, not a bad deal for either side. But nothing to get excited about.

I thought the Buccos were asking Sanchez to play winter ball to make up for lost ABs due to the injury. Is that no longer the case?

Kerry Wood to the Yankees. That's one less bad Shapiro contract on the team. Now if we could just get rid of Hackner...

Did they actually give up a prospect in any of these deals?

Berkman is likely a type-A which probably gets them more in return than they gave up in any of these trades.

He's so injury prone and the fact that both you and I can acknowledge that he's a shitty player probably means that anyone(save Ed Wade/Kaaaaahhhnnn) can tell he's not worth trading for. Doumit in Right Field is going to be hilarious. I can't wait.
