Just watched the video of the fight again, and it looked like everything was over until Carpenter started running his mouth to Baker and Scott Rolen went after him.

For him to sit there and whine and complain about how unprofessional Cueto was is a joke, an absolute joke! If he wants unprofessional, then Jocketty can call up Aroldis Chapman and his 103 MPH fastball for Carpenter's next start against the Reds.

Yeah...I want to know what Carpenter said to Dusty because that's what I've noticed after seeing it again. Things had settled down enough that it would have stopped and Carpenter clearly says something.

If I'm the comissh:

Phillips and Molina -- 3 games
Carpenter and Cueto -- 5 games (more so they will miss a start)
Baker and LaRussa -- 3 games

It's very clear after seeing it again that Baker and LaRussa were instigators in this. They were both jawing at each other pretty good.

Agreed, and I think that's what makes this Reds/Cardinals matchups fun. Baker and LaRussa just can't stand each other.

As an aside, I'm not saying that the Reds are choir boys over here. Phillips could have phrased what he said much better, but that's how Phillips is, right or wrong. The way he handled it started the fight last night. But Phillips was still 100 percent spot on with his comments.

Agreed...after seeing the shin tap of his bat against Molina, which I didn't see last night, it's clear Phillips was stupid. He does that every game but it was just dumb to do last night. That said, Molina could have said something, they jaw, everyone comes out and things could have stopped with no ejections...nada.

There's some blame to put on the umpire as well. He let those two get way too close and way too fired up before stepping in.

The fact that the game ended with no HBP, particularly Molina, leads me to suspect that the Reds are toast. No way in hell Molina shouldn't spend at least one AB diving for cover, not if the Reds staff had any balls at all.

I see no reason for Molina to be suspended (without knowing what was said). Phillips provoked him plain and simple from what I saw.

Molina didn't have to respond. Both Phillips and Molina should have been ejected, IMO.

Regardless, I love that MLB has a heated rivalry outside of the Northeast corridor.

And that's where my comment about the ump comes in. He did a piss-poor job of stopping that early on. Then when they wouldn't shutup he should have tossed them both and stopped it there.

There are plenty of great rivalries in MLB. Its just that the Northeast doesnt like to pay attention to anything other than New York/Boston.

I disagree with the first part, Phillips calls out the Cardinal players and Molina let him know that wouldn't fly.

I do agree it makes for a great rivalry and now I'm trying to get tickets to one of the Reds - Cardinal games.. too bad there is only one left.

If it's me I toss Molina because of whatever he said when Phillips returned to the batter's box. Phillips started it, but Molina kept it going.

I give the Cards all the credit in the world for this sweep they are about to take care of. Well done, taking back the Central... we'll see if they can hold on to it.

But they're still a bunch of whiny little bitches.

45 or so games left. Plenty of baseball left. If we can take care of business on the west coast road trip I'm extremely confident.

Been a Reds fan long? The late West Coast trip = the end for the Reds. Hopefully, they don't tank bad enough to play themselves out of the wildcard.

They will be 5 back the next time they see the Cards.

Yea, I have. This is the same Cards team that is below .500 against the Astros. They are having a great series, but it's far from over.

Just once I wish a team would come out and say "stop sucking and we'll play you."

Does Francoeur really think his .677 OPS is good enough to warrant playing time or trade interest?

I don't think it's necessary since there's very little chance he'd ever "stop".

So the Cards have to put Jason LaRue on the DL because of a mild concussion & sore ribs suffered in the scuffle .

Couldn't have anything to do with his .197 BA, his .596 OPS, or him going 2 for 12 since a 3-hit game on July 3rd raised his average to a season high .205

Nor could the move have anything to do with the opportunity to call up Steven Hill from AA where he led the team with 22 HR's and 86 RBI's.

Nah, I'm sure LaRue was just too dinged up to play after what those nasty Reds did to him.

Or the fact they can whine about how awful Cueto is to have kicked him and that Cueto should be suspended longer.

How long does it normally take MLB to decide on punishment? Should we be hearing something tomorrow?

Usually it doesn't take long for them to issue the punishments. It usually takes about 6 weeks before anyone serves any suspensions but I would guess they will be handing them out pretty soon. I hate for the Reds fans to get anymore upset but I would prepare yourselves for Cueto's suspension to be quite a bit longer than anyone else. (Regardless of whether you think the Cards are all bitches or not. )

I'm enjoying it a lot right now... ESPN etc, please keep focusing on these other division races while we can just keep creeping back into the wild-card race. (3.5 out now, with Pedroia back Tuesday)

Francoeur is a great example of the type of player who gets their personality confused with their talent by "professional baseball people." Outside of his first half-season, the guy has consistently sucked, but he's a nice guy and hard worker, and the whole story line about him being a hometown hero who struggled to live up to expectations makes him even more sympathetic.

Darrin Erstad was another great example. He had one outstanding year and parlayed that into another half-decade of sucking and getting picked up by multiple teams thinking he'd turn back into what he was, simply because he was a hard worker and a good defensive player.

Once the struggles began in Atlanta, there was quite a bit of fan talk about his work ethic being one of his problems. Basically that he was a spoiled Mama's boy that was used to everyone kissing his ass for being a star athlete & that he really wasn't equipped to deal with failure. As I recall, toward the end even Chipper was making thinly veiled comments to the media about how (paraphrasing) he wasn't good at listening to anyone who tried to help him.

I really thought getting him away from his parents would be good for his career but it doesn't seem to have helped much.

Reports have Larry Wayne Jones out for the year with a torn ACL. At 39 next year, this may be the end. Think I may go cry in the corner.

There was a point, shortly before he was traded, that Chipper said something to the effect that plenty of people have tried to help him but talking does no good with someone who won't listen to anybody.

I knew then that he was on borrowed time in Atlanta. It was pretty obvious that Jones was really liked Francouer when he came up but eventually got frustrated with him / his attitude. It seemed like pretty much everyone had the same feeling about him eventually.

NEW YORK -- Cincinnati Reds pitcher Johnny Cueto has been suspended for seven games for his actions during a brawl with the St. Louis Cardinals, and both managers were suspended for two games.
Major League Baseball said Thursday that Cueto, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa and Reds manager Dusty Baker also were fined undisclosed amounts.
Four other players were fined but not suspended -- Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter and catcher Yadier Molina, and Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips and relief pitcher Russ Springer.

Carpenter gets NOTHING, while Cueto gets 7?

Yeah, that's bullshit. Carpenter was the sole person responsible for turning that from a typical, "nothing actually happening" baseball fight to something that more resembled a scrum. Complete BS.

Phillips could have just watched his language and none of this would have happened.

Jon, as for Larue, I'd say they were happy with his lack of production, so to speak. His 2 for 12 is much better than what he was hitting earlier in the year. I don't expect Hill to see much playing time at all, 22 homers and all.

I do have to say it's humorous to hear Carp say things like unprofessional. When he gets in the heat of the moment he's as unprofessional as anyone else. Card fans call it "intense" while most everyone else calls it unprofessional. I'm a Card fan, but I see it for what it is.

On that note, Cueto kicking (pinned or not pinned to the net) is just about as silly as it gets.

I'm with the crowd that believes that the four major players in this ordeal and the managers should have been suspended.

Can the Pirates' acquisition of Chan Ho Park be seen as anything other than out and out going for the first overall pick next season? I mean, when your team is playing .300 ball and still trailing the Orioles for Anthony Rendon, is there a better move that you can make than picking up Chan Ho Park for the stretch run?

I know he has his own dedicated thread, but how crazy is it that Park hasn't been good for like 8-years, yet he's made like $65-million and continues to stay in the majors?
