That was actually the 2nd time this season Harden had been pulled while pitching a no-hitter

Rich Harden has never pitched even 2/3 of a season (ok, maybe in 2002 when he hit 181 innings). Being careful with a guy 115 pitches into the game and not even through 7 innings (who had already walked 5 batters) is much different than pulling a guy at 105 with 2 innings left who hasn't yet been on the DL this season.

Not when that pitcher missed his last start and went one more start before landing on the DL.

I wonder when someone will figure out that a starter pitching 6 innings every 5th day is not the most efficient usage of payroll dollars/win probability. Just as the mythical closer isn't the be all end all.

I hope this PHI/HOU game keeps going because Roy Oswalt is playing LF at the moment.

remember that while Sack was once (probably) a good soul, his place in Dante's Inferno puts Judas Icarot to shame - betrayal can be forgiven, but Tommy Lasorda worship requires a mind so depraved that one can no longer be considered human. Do the right thing - come pitch to us. Often.

Dear Reds,

Come play the AL West while you're out here as well, please. We need the help even more than the Giants.

Every Angels hitter.

Which of course is only reason for Jayson Stark to crawl out of his irrelevancy to post an article. "Ooh, look, a pitcher played out of position. And he's a Phillie! Time to fire up the iPad!"

I have to admit when I saw the Giants lineup of 3-4-5 hitters on Monday of Aubrey Huff, Pat Burrell, and Jose Guillen, I chuckled to myself.

Now, I just weep to myself and mutter a lot.

Dear Reds,

Remember that between 1988 and 1990, our three teams represented the NL in the World Series.

The Dodgers handled the A's. The Reds handled the A's.

The Giants? Got swept by the A's.

Are you sure you want to serve as the booster seat for the kids riding the short bus?

Regards,

Sack

What's kinda sad is how much better that is than we've been subject to recently as Giants fans. McCoveyChronicles, a Giants blog, just posted a lineup from the 2008 season for the Giants for comparison:

Randy Winn
Ivan Ochoa
Fred Lewis
Bengie Molina
Aaron Rowand
Pablo Sandoval
Travis Ishikawa
Emanuel Burriss
Kevin Correia

Bench:
Eugenio Velez
Rich Aurilia
Omar Vizquel

Yes, yes, yes...god those were terrible lineups. Our lineup this year looks like murderers row compared to those guys.

Braves lead the Rockies 7-1 after two, mentioned here because 7 of 8 Braves batters already have at least one hit.

Now 10-1 top 3rd, all 9 hitters now have a hit courtesy of Infante's three-run homer to follow Jurjens double.

It's a Coors Field kind of day, Jurrjens implodes & the lead is down to 10-8 in the 6th.

Sadly, I pretty much called that one when I called my mother-in-law to remind her of the day game (Braves on TV is pretty much a staple of her summers at this point).

Who was it on here who was bitching about Rob Dibble? He was given a couple of days off, probably not so coincidentally after having said that Strasburg should "suck it up," "stop crying," and pitch. I fucking hate that XM put him on the morning baseball show - he's awful. But at least you guys got a break for 2 games.

Kind of funny news (although not surprising within the Pirates' organization):

Curve broadcaster Zangrilli quits - AltoonaMirror.com - Altoona, PA | News, Sports, Jobs, Community Information - The Altoona Mirror

He apparently called the first three innings and then quit, effective immediately.

I don't understand - he's upset he has to call games and work a regular day, is that it?

Yeah, I think minor league broadcasters really have to wear a lot of different hats, and it sounds like he got sick of it.I know they have to do a lot of website work and write promotional articles, commercials, stuff like that.

As always, there's two sides to every story, but it sounds like the guy graduated from college, and thought he'd become the next Vin Scully without paying his dues. Again, there's two sides, but I think he's going to have a tough time getting another job in this capacity, especially considering the way he left. He couldn't tough it out for two more weeks? No matter who's in the right here, that looks bad. What a loser.

In other news...another day, another minor league ump overreacts and mistakenly tosses a player for no reason at all.

Sounds like he wanted more money because he didn't realize the job required more than just calling games. Not toughing it out until the end of the season is just plain silly and probably will cost him a career in this profession.

As someone who called games in the minors for three seasons, I can tell you that yes, that's exactly what a minor league broadcaster does on a daily basis.

You come in and do your "office work" of game notes, press releases and stat packs and also send information to the league or both clubhouses when necessary.

The game is really the downtime--you call your innings and write the game story. Anyone who has worked even one week in the minors knows this. It's always been this way.

I doubt another MiLB team will hire him to call games for them given the spectacular way he left his previous position and the fact that, you know, the job is pretty much the same everywhere.

Like people said there is definitely another side to this story in the very article you linked. He never calls the 4th-6th inning and often doesn't call the last innings. The organization had already accepted his resignation so it isn't like he walked out in a "blaze of glory". Don't see why he would have trouble getting a job with another team.

Zangrilli called the first three innings of Tuesday's game against Erie at Blair County Ballpark, then went off the air, as usual, for the middle innings. His assistant, Mike Passanisi, always handles the middle innings of home broadcasts, and occasionally he stays on for the remainder of the contest when Zangrilli would be handling other duties.

Passanisi stayed on the air for the remainder of the game, and nothing was mentioned about Zangrilli.

Maybe not so much for how he quit, but why he quit - he didn't want to accept the various responsibilities of the job, and it sounds like those are common to most jobs in the industry. So why hire him? There has to be something more to this, or else that guy was really, really stupid. Maybe in addition to his desk job, he was being asked to get coffee or take the boss's drycleaning or something.
