After a long drought, the Rancheros are back to winning Benny Myers awards. We should have a strong contender next year as well.

So I spent a ton of time going into the database by hand and fixing some data for hall of famers that did not import correctly in 2038 (when we started statslab for this league). I finally finished it and have spent a bit of time enjoying the effort by looking through the FOOL Hall of Fame.
Some random facts and figures: Oldest Hall of Famer (if he was still alive): While we had two Hall of Famers born in 1939 and quite a few born in 1940 and 1941, the oldest member of the FOOL Hall of Fame is the legendary Gabriel Prado. Born March 22nd, 1936, if he was still alive today he would be 146 years old! Hall of Famer that played the most seasons: It appears to be quite a common feat among Hall of Famers to play 20, 21 or even 22 seasons. The winner of this category however is the great Hideaki Tanaka. He played an amazing 25 year career! Starting with the beginning of the FOOL league in 1961, he lasted all the way through to 1985! Hall of Famer that played the fewest seasons: Kirby Bates of the Baltimore Charm made the Hall of Fame despite only playing in 8 seasons. After the 2011 reforming of the league, Bates joined up with Baltimore at the age of 32. Despite being beyond his prime, he still managed to hit more than 35 Home runs his next six seasons and led the league in HR and RBI 4 out of those 6 seasons. Hall of Famer that played the fewest seasons part II: So you might wonder which hall of famer played the fewest seasons and was not limited to either the 1961 start or the 2010/2011 league reforming? That would be the once promising Frank Dawson of Chico. Dawson's short career spanned only 9 seasons (2033 - 2041). During that time however, Dawson won the Benny Myers Award, was a 3 time Tanaka award winner and a 7 time all star. Which Hall of Famer has the highest career batting average? Two Hall of Famers have a .345 batting average over their career. One of them, Andy Eaton, just saw his single season batting record broken this season by Nakamura. Eaton is second fiddle however lifetime to former Ann Arbor great Nick McCain who beats out Eaton's .3451 with a .3455 of his own. For perspective, if 36 year old Jose Quintana can hold on until he retires, he currently has a .363 lifetime batting avg which would be best of all time. Which position has the fewest hall of Famers? There is a two way tie. Predictably, there are only 6 catchers in the hall of fame, tying them for the fewest. The surprise here is that there are also only 6 Center Fielders inducted to the Hall. Center Field also averages the fewest seasons played with only 14. Which position averages the most years played among hall of famers? You would think a position like 1B would have the longest careers in the hall. Hall of Fame First Basemen average only 16 year careers. The longest careers in the hall belong to Relief Pitchers and Shortstops who enjoy on average 18 year careers. Anyways, I've finished my database updating to repair the Hall of Fame. I've updated the links on the FOOL homepage to point to a new location for the FOOL Hall of Fame. Unfortunately the old format was a bit too time consuming to upkeep, but the new format provides more stats easily which I think is just as good! |

Wow, that's completely awesome, Alan. Love all the info there. I'll have to check out the Hall when I get back from work later.
Funny you mention the lognevity of Hall of Fame SSs. At some point in time, current Hooligan Chris Mosley is going to be yet another SS Hall of Famer (already 3000+ hits & 500+ HRs, as well as several Slick Fielders), but it's amazing to me how long he has lasted. He came up with the Hooligans very young (I forget how long, but it might have been 21; definitely close to that). He is now 38, and I just signed him to a two year extension. His ratings have fallen slightly over the years, but it's a very gradual decrease (he started ratings drop maybe at 31, and yet he's still an above average player at 38, IMO). He even still has over a 100+ rating at SS, IIRC, which is mind-boggling. I am glad I won a title in 2065 (Mosley was a 2nd year player, I think), so he could get a ring before he retires. He's mostly played out his string in the worst stretch of Hammersmith baseball squads in the franchise history.

![]() Friday, November 6th, 2082: Enshrinement beckoned for Leroy Winter, as he was inducted into the Front Office Offseason League Hall of Fame today. Winter, who played many of his 3072 games at first baseman, was an outstanding hitter and batted .330 over his career and swatted 672 home runs. Baseball's newest legend collected 2215 RBIs and scored 2517 runs during his illustrious career. But while he was class act on the field, it was off the field where Leroy Winter shined the most. He quietly integrated himself in his team's community, selflessly donating his time and money to various causes. The press was largely unaware of his charity and Winter never made a fuss about it. "I played a child's game for many years and this game brought me fame and fortune," Winter explained during his ceremony. "For some people, it's enough, but my mother raised me to realize that money doesn't make a person great. Being good at a game doesn't make a person great. Helping those in need and giving of yourself selflessly is what makes a person great. And that's what I have tried to be my entire life: great, both on the field and off of the field." |

![]() Friday, November 6th, 2082: His beautiful bronze plaque on the wall said it all: 601 saves, 86 wins and a 3.23 ERA. Those stats got Alberto López elected to the Front Office Offseason League Hall of Fame and today the bullpen star gained his rightful place among the baseball legends. In a jovial mood López said in his induction speech, "I especially want to thank all of the starting pitchers who couldn't go nine innings... they got me here." In 1293 games, he pitched 1488.2 innings, struck out 1340 batters, walked 451 and had a 86-114 won-lost mark. |

![]() Friday, November 6th, 2082: How do you get to the Front Office Offseason League Hall of Fame? Just hit 500 homers, get 3000 hits, win 300 games or perhaps just save 300 games. Not an easy task, is it? But occasionally it does happen -- it happened to the gifted right fielder Tomás Valenzuela. Tomás Valenzuela was recently inducted into the coveted shrine of hardball heroes by the Baseball Writers Association. Valenzuela was always a favorite of the beat writers -- always quick with a quip and always willing to talk about the game -- but that's not why he got elected to the Hall of Fame. Valenzuela played a pretty good brand of baseball, too. He played in 2352 games, had 2516 hits, 346 home runs, 1401 RBIs and scored 1359 runs while batting .326 in his career. Reminiscing about his life in baseball, Valenzuela said it all began by hitting grand slam homers in the last of the ninth in his backyard and ended up in the Hall of Fame. "It was quite a trip. I can't believe they pay us money to play a kid's game. Thank goodness, I was good at it. I only got a high school education and I had to cheat to get that. Who knows what I would have done without baseball? I was just a poor old country boy. For the longest time I even thought the last words of the national anthem were 'play ball.'" |

I meant to put him in as a Settler, but OOTPX is behaving different where the way I used to do it is causing player photos to be completely different which I didn't like. I got frustrated after about 2 hours of messing with it and said just screw it. Sorry! Lesson is if you have a legendary player you want to go in as your team, make sure they retire with you! |

Seems like a buyer's market out there. Tons of great talent still available, including last year's Commissioner's Award Winner Enrique Castro. Castro in my opinion had a fantastic season but was completely overshadowed because of Nakamura. Without Nakamura, people likely would have been commenting on Castro's performance.
He doesn't show signs of slowing down just yet, but who is going to pony up for a player that just turned 34? Other younger players in their prime that could be stars are also available though such as Pepin and Caesar too! |

I guess Jemke Ekkel is Valdosta's leader. So far down the list tells you either how little loyalty I had to players or how little offense I had
![]() Some of my best hitters like Rick Inman only had 1073 RBI with me, Edgardo Reyes as good as he was only had 475 career RBI with me. Weird! |

You were always a "value" owner, IIRC, Alan. You were usually better at removing the emotion in personnel decisions, or at the least, you weren't afraid to let players go and try something new if they asked for too much money. Or at least that's how it was with hitters--I think you tended to keep good pitching longer (more like the rest of us).
I am surprised anyone passed Inman for you, though. I am also surprised Mosley is at the top for me, although that's a ton of RBIs there.

I'm pretty sure Villarreal will never be passed by another Ranchero. He was great, and got to spend most of his years in the 'sim forward' phase, meaning he never had a chance to get to another team or even out of our lineup.
