2010 in Film

Earlier today I was looking through what all films have been released in 2010 that I haven't seen so that I could add them to my Netflix list when I noticed something.

Two films that have been released this year (Toy Story 3 & Alice in Wonderland) have made over $1 billion dollars each.

Add to that much of Avatar's $2.7 billion coming in 2010 as well, though I don't know the exact figures on how much of it came in 2010.

Add in Inception, New Moon, Shrek Forever After and Iron Man 2 all of which made over six hundred million dollars worldwide. How to Train Your Dragon and Clash of the Titans also each came in just under five hundred million.

This surely has to be one of the most successful years for the film industry, especially in recent memory.

I don't really keep up with the film industry all that much but I was under the impression that for the last decade or so the numbers haven't really been that impressive. Or at least I remember hearing complaints about something like that.

So am I right in thinking that this year, so far, has been huge for the film industry?

And if so, why?

With the economy in the crapper one might think that people would be less inclined to go spend $15 or so bucks per ticket (not including popcorn/candy/drinks) to go out to the movie.

So what is it that seems to have gotten people out this year?

3D? With Avatar's success 3D has certainly become quite big and has shown that it can make up a fairly large percentage of profits.

Are the movies this year just more interesting or better quality? Avatar was an event, and Inception was something spectacular but are the rest all that special?

Or is it that because of the economy people aren't going on vacation as much, so for say the holiday or to do something special people have gone to the movies instead?

We're still not done with this year, especially with a new Narnia and Harry Potter to come.

For those who keep up with the movie industry more, what is 2011 looking like? I glanced through a list of 2011 movies and, while early in the year looks dull to me from a quick glance without knowing anything about any of them, the late spring and summer look good.

You've got Thor, Pirates of the Caribbean 4, The Hangover 2, a new X-Men, a new Planet of the Apes, Cars 2, Green Lantern, Transformers 3, Harry Potter finale, Captain America.

Dunno how many of those will actually be good, but you never know.

And some in the fall/winter that jump out at me are...

Another The Three Musketeers film, another Twilight (oh joy), Mission Impossible IV, Sherlock Holmes 2, National Treasure 3 (awesome, I loved the first two)

2012 has potential too with Underworld 4, Men in Black 3, The Avengers, new Spider Man, Batman 3, Monsters Inc. 2 and yet another Twilight.

Still...maybe there will be some 'Inception' like original movies that turn out to be awesome.

I do hope that with Inception doing so well we'll see more original movies on that same level. Looking over the list of films above, not much original is there.
