McAlister, Vasher and Cromartie disagree with this thread title. Cool play, though.

I haven't seen the video yet (blocked at work), but I did read the article. I think it would have been much more entertaining for Yahoo to just post the video without an explanation of the rules. Yahoo doesn't like comedy.
I hate everything.

I can't believe they didn't have a kicker who could simply kick the ball out of the back of the end zone. I know it's like 56 yards, but the only accuracy you need is to keep it between the sidelines. Given an entire field to work with, you'd think a professional kicker could kick the ball 55-60 yards without having to worry about aiming it between the goal posts. And given the rules, you'd think every team would go find some dude who could do nothing but kick 70 yarders - use him on kick-offs if you don't want him kicking real FGs or something. Sheesh. But maybe I'm missing something about the way the CFL works.

He had to aim a little bit and couldn't just kick it randomly. He didn't want the football to hit the beer tent and bounce back into play.

Didn't they call it a 36-yarder? It was a 56-yarder. |

Goal posts are at the front of the end zone. It was a 36-yarder if he made it for 3 points, but 56 yards if he wanted the 1 point.

I absolutely agree, Ksyrup. A 56-yarder is much more difficult than a 36-yarder, obviously - but that kick shouldn't have been as difficult as he made it seem (either aiming or just going for the back of the endzone)
PS - CFL is weird, haha.

The rouge definitely adds quite a bit of strategy to field goals in such a situation. I like it.

Judging from the comments on the Yahoo post, anybody who thinks that this play is representative of Canadian football as a whole needs to be shot in the face repeatedly and then beaten with a stick.

it really looked far, far wide once it reached the back of the endzone but look at when it crossed the goal post. It was closer then. Other thing you need to realize is that the hash marks are wider that in American football and the kicker was kicking the ball with an angle which makes any miss become that much wider when it gets past the goalpost... I would have to agree with Ksyrup and would have had my kicker kick it through the endzone. FM

That kind of play happens maybe a couple times a season in the CFL. For those commenting on the poor kicking, don't forget that the field is much wider than an NFL field and the angles can be much more tricky. Having said that, he should have made the kick anyway.
The deeper end zone is just one of the reasons I prefer CFL football to NFL. Obviously the calibre of player is nowhere near as high but the wider and longer field, deeper end zone etc makes it a more exciting game. |

I think I would like the deeper end zone more, too. Seems like it would open up red zone offense AND dissuade a lot of FGs from beyond the 25 (that would be a 52 yarder in Canada). EDIT to add: yes, I would still keep the goal posts at the back of the end zone. Screw the kickers.

That would put quite a dent in scoring. Teams would have to drive to the 30 yard line to even get to attempt a 50 yard field goal. With the longer field that would mean a lot of 70 yard drives just to get in field goal range. |

Eh, it would mean more teams going for it on 4th and short, IMO. Which they would convert fairly often, leading to TD drives.
