"I need you now" a copy?
The Alan Parsons Project representatives have said Lady Antebellum's song "I need you Now" is a blatant copy of "Eye in the Sky". Opinions?

Only hearing that song peripherally, I just assumed that it was sampling Eye in the Sky. I can't believe that they would pass that off as their own melody.

So I guess people that get sampled in songs get royalties normally or something, and if you don't admit to sampling they get nothing?

Similar but they slowed down the song (or at least seemed to lower it) to get it to sound even closer.

That is the intro to "Eye in the Sky". Since George Harrison was ruled to have copied "He's so fine" in "My Sweet Lord", this is a slam dunk case.

On a separate note, if you want to hear some seriously awesome stuff from Allan Parsons Project, check out "Edgar Allan Poe: Tales of Mystery and Imagination".

Grand Funk Railroad paved the way for Jefferson Airplane, which cleared the way for Jefferson Starship. The stage was now set for the Alan Parsons Project, which I believe was some sort of hovercraft.

I never knew who sang the Parsons song. Probably close enough that Lady Antebellum should settle.

This is now one of my all-time favorite threads, for the benign reason that this video was brought to my attention.

I have to say...I avoided this thread earlier because I thought it was about this song. But curiosity got the better of me.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3o0zrHjzciY Wrong song title (which I realized after the fact) but now you can officially call me satan for unleashing this on you all. |

I've got both songs committed to memory and honestly, while similar, they're still different enough that I don't think there is any intentional foul play there.
I also think its rather strange that its taken this long for Alan Parsons to actually say anything about it. The song has been out forever, if there was an issue they'd have done something about it long before this. |

I think these simple, great melodies become part of people's deep subconscious and they're just going to come out in songs that those people later create. There's no truly original art, it all is influenced from others, often totally subconsciously, which I think happens ALL the time. Youtube is filled with these kinds of mashups.

Speaking of stolen songs, Violent Femmes have a bitch about the NFL Network Thursday night commercial I just saw. WTF? The intro was a blatant rip-off.
