Sweet Swing, Sweet Month for Rookie Tolento
Monday, August 1st, 2044: Youngster Bernardo Tolento emerged as the latest Republic League Rookie of the Month today. The young man from Waikiki deserved the honor, batting .333 with 1 home run and 13 RBI. Is the month of July a harbinger of things to come or just a fluke? We'll find out someday, but for now, we'll just let Tolento enjoy the limelight.

Tolento's current batting average stands at .292 and he has chalked up 4 home runs and 45 RBIs.

Washington Second Baseman Best CL Rookie
Monday, August 1st, 2044: Henry Gill was toddling around on his tricycle when some of the guys he's playing against were in their prime, but the 25-year-old second baseman definitely knows how to get to first, second or beyond. Today he was chosen July's Continental League Rookie of the Month for his remarkable month of hitting.

In 25 games Gill batted .378 for Washington, slapping 34 hits in 90 at-bats with 1 home run, drove in 10 runs and scored 12 times.

In 104 games Gill is hitting .270 this season with 99 hits, 2 home runs, 39 RBIs, 40 walks, .345 OBP and has scored 41 runs.

Looks like Palmeiro didn't handle the pressure added from the press too well. After I mentioned his great season, he hit only .209 with 4 HR and 15 RBI last month.

Trampakoulos Rips HR Number 300
Sunday, August 7th, 2044: 300 home runs is a lot of home runs to hit. It's a number that very few players reach. Today Arion Trampakoulos became a member of that exclusive club. He belted it at Constitution Plaza against the Terriers. But sometimes milestone homers don't win the game. The powerful Washington first baseman got all the headlines, but Stafford came away with the victory. They beat the Freedom 4-2.

During the postgame interview he told the press, "It's a big relief to get it over. I tried not to think about it, but it's kind of hard when you have a huge sign on the scoreboard staring at you every time you step up to the plate. The home run was nice, but I would have preferred to win the game."

His batting totals for the game showed 1 hit in 4 at-bats, 1 home run and 2 RBI.

The hardworking and dedicated Trampakoulos also said, "I'll celebrate a little with my family tonight but not too much. This is not the last home run I will hit. I think I have a lot baseball left in me and have other goals. I'll get back to work tomorrow."

In his 1466-game career Trampakoulos has hit .307 with 1682 hits, 300 home runs, and 1002 RBIs and has scored 908 runs.

#500 for Harrington
Wednesday, August 31st, 2044: Spring first baseman Phil Harrington pounded a home run during the Lions 11-10 loss to Cleveland yesterday. Despite the defeat the long ball was a significant achievement and raised his career home run total to 500.

"Some hitters never live up to the hype," said his manager. "Phil has definitely lived up to his. He's hammered the heck out of the ball year after year."

The Spring star went 3 hits for 4 at-bats during the game, scoring 2 runs and had 3 runs batted in.

Over his 2219-game career Harrington has compiled a .317 batting average and collected 2648 hits, 501 home runs and 1679 RBIs.

Thomas Grabs RL Top Pitcher Trophy
Thursday, September 1st, 2044: Martin Thomas was the anchor in the Cleveland bullpen last month and snatched up the Republic League Pitcher of the Month honors for August. The 32-year-old is in the prime of his career and pitching like he intends to stay around baseball for quite some time to come.

He threw 17.2 innings over 15 relief appearances and collected a 4-0 record with 22 strikeouts and no saves while etching his 1.53 ERA.

This season Thomas has accumulated 1 save, registered a 2.93 ERA and struck out 92 in 83 innings. He also has a 11-1 record in 69 relief appearances.

Raindrops Sweeney August's Top Hurler
Thursday, September 1st, 2044: The Continental League Pitcher of the Month honor has been given to Garrett Sweeney of St Cloud for a superlative month.

"I actually never wanted to be a pitcher," Sweeney told reporters when asked who he credits for his pitching ability. "I was an outfielder until high school and on the third day of tryouts my coach came up and said, 'Son you couldn't hit a lick even if we put it on a tee for ya.' Well, that ticked me off, so I decided if I couldn't hit I wanted to make sure no one else could either and so here I am."

It all turned out for the best as the St Cloud starter notched a 5-0 record with a 2.18 ERA last month. He made 5 starts and struck out 33 in 33 innings.

To date this season, Sweeney has a record of 13 wins and 3 losses and a 3.33 ERA. He has appeared in 29 games and struck out 155 in 175.2 innings.

So far on the season Donlon is hitting .331 with 41 home runs, 144 RBIs and 89 runs scored. He has 170 hits and played in 133 games.

Hayes Grabs CL Best Batter Award for August
Thursday, September 1st, 2044: Mike Hayes is in the final year of his contract with St Cloud and today added a timely piece of hardware to his trophy case. Playing in 28 games in August the 33-year-old right fielder ripped Continental League pitchers for a .287 batting average, nabbing him the Batter of the Month award.

He also rang up 14 home runs, 35 RBIs and 30 runs scored.

A month left in the season, it seems homefield advantage in both leagues is for the most part decided. Many teams are still in the hunt for playoff spots however!

John Ballard Records 300th Save, Tames Cleveland 4-3
Friday, September 9th, 2044: Once again John Ballard took the mound for Portland with the game on the line, a scenario that has played out hundreds of times for the Axemen and their top reliever. And like he has several hundred times before, Ballard closed out the victory over the Cleveland Naps. This save, however, was a bit more special than most -- it was his 300th career save. The 36-year-old bullpen specialist shut down Cleveland on no runs and no hits, while working 1 innings in the 4-3 win at The Beaver Den.

"Early in my career, 300 saves was the only goal I had - if I could be around long enough to get it," Ballard said. "I thought to myself, if I could get 300, I'd feel like I'd accomplished something."

Ballard has a career ERA of 2.85 in 1163 games. In 1279 innings he has allowed opposing hitters a .227 batting average and chalked up a 108-65 won-lost mark with 1556 strikeouts.

Waikiki has a magic number of 6

Washington, Cleveland and Spring are all still mathematically alive.

Branco Gijsberts Hurls No-No Against Havana
Wednesday, September 28th, 2044: "Branco Gijsberts was just plain nasty on the mound today," according to his batterymate and quite a few of the Havana Banana Sluggers after the Washington hurler fired a 4-0 no-hitter.

The Banana Sluggers were powerless against him. "It is what we call in baseball 'filthy'... his stuff was just too much for us today," the losing manager told reporters after the game."

In an overpowering performance Gijsberts faced 29 batters in all and finish the game with 7 strikeouts and 3 walks.

"After the first couple of innings, I knew I had some good stuff going," Gijsberts said. "In the bullpen, it really wasn't that good, to be honest. But when I got out on the mound and flipped the switch, I had some pretty good stuff. I had a good fastball with control and I was able to throw my breaking ball and changeup for strikes."

This year Gijsberts has fashioned a 9-16 mark, 4.98 ERA and pitched 189.2 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .247 against him and he has logged 127 strikeouts.

Even though Havana has had a great season, Washington's Gijsberts gives them something to think about right before the start of the postseason!

Gijsberts' no-hitter is the first ever pitched against Havana in their franchise's history.

Entering the final day of the regular season, St. Cloud clinches a playoff spot was Washington is eliminated from the postseason.

In the Republic League, Waikiki and Cleveland are deadlocked entering the final game:

Waikiki 87-74
Cleveland 87-74

Waikiki plays at home vs Las Vegas
Cleveland has a tough road trip against New York

Because FOOL-X can ignore pesky things such as time zones, we'll pretend both games are occurring at the exact same time!

Entering the 9th inning, Waikiki leads 6-1 over Las Vegas until Las Vegas scores 5 runs on 5 hits, thanks in part to a Dale Donlon 3-run HR to tie things up 6-6!

Over in the other game, entering the 9th inning, Cleveland and New York are all tied up 4-4!

Waikiki vs Las Vegas heads to the 10th, where in the bottom of the 10th, Waikiki's Emilio Santellano hits an RBI single to win the game for Waikiki!

Meanwhile, over in the Cleveland vs New York game, still in the bottom of the 9th, New York has pinch runner Dong-hyun Pak at second base with two outs. Julio Lopez hits an easy ground ball to Shortstop, where Cleveland's poor fielding Alfredo Morales doesn't cleanly field it! The ball rolls through his legs and into Left-center field. Pak is around third and scores to win the game for New York!

Waikiki clinches the final playoff spot as Cleveland now has a new goat to blame!

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! What a bum! He's cut...

Good Job Waikik - and good luck to the playoff teams.

Looking forward to see how my two rookie SP's did. I'm starting to get that feeling that my rebuilding stage is over - and that is a good feeling to have

Even though Palmeiro fizzled in the second half of the season with only 11 HR after the all star break, he still records the most Home runs in a single season since the great Kien-lung Teng hit 65 HR back in 2008 (36 seasons ago)!

The new file is up! Playoffs run tomorrow morning.

Just a warning, I have an appointment in the morning at sim time, so the playoffs will run a little later in the morning. (maybe delayed an hour or 90 minutes or so). Try to get your exports in on time though in case I get home early!

There have been a few that have done both. (They always make sure to let me know how bad my prediction was afterwards too!)

That's what I'm wondering. How "accurate" has the rating scale been so far?

But I'm totally realistic enough to know that it depends on the quality of all the teams in any given year. (For example, it's not impressive that a C-grade team would beat out the only B-grade team, but it's pretty crazy if they take on an A+ team and win.)

My experience with the OOTP game engine is once you are in the playoffs, anyone can beat anyone. Obviously a team with a very strong top of the pitching rotation gets that much tougher in the playoffs, but we've seen all kinds of upsets there.

As for the accuracy of my preseason ratings? I'd like to think it has been fairly close on the mark since I've started doing it, but maybe I'm fooling myself Obviously I can't factor in opening day signings since they hadn't happened yet. And it is only a guess on my part of how I think a team will do or a team -should- do. I find usually my predictions end up closer to team's pyth records than their actual records.. but Sometimes I swing and miss big too (perhaps due to a GM trying something new, or forgetting to export or whatever)

I'm with Alan. There's no telling, just on record. Should I win? Probably. But consider that I se tthe CL record for wins, I think, last year, or close to it, but I didn't take home the hardware.

Playoffs are a different sort of beast.

Good luck tomorrow, Teach, and to the rest of the playoff squads.
