Tough luck Radii, usually by the time I encounter an ice beast it takes 2 or 3 Throw Icicles to take them down. Make sure you approach it from an angle where you get maximum range. Usually if you are auto exploring and see one, if your stealth is high enough they will stay asleep and you can move back out of line of sight. Then either avoid it or come from the best angle to get several Throw Icicles at it. Which brings up a good interface tip. If you auto explore into something you think you can't handle, step back out of sight. Then press Shift-x and move the cursor over the ice beast or whatever it is and press "e" that will set an exclusion to your auto explore and keep you out of their line of sight. I've done that several times on this run, for Sigmund and a couple other elites that I didn't want to mess with.

Keep getting a little bit better, but still dying. This time teleported away from death yaks and ended up surrounded by elephants with 4 health. No scrolls of fear so I just had to take it.
49823 Frigid the Gelid (level 14, -6/56 (59) HPs) Began as a Deep Elf Ice Elementalist on Aug 14, 2011. Was the Champion of Sif Muna. Mangled by an elephant (10 damage) ... on Level 7 of the Lair of Beasts. The game lasted 02:41:49 (30080 turns).

I had a pretty good guy going with my first attempt. I got a scroll of acquirement, which I turned into a staff of ice, and I had a short sword of freezing, but none of it could save me from my stupidity:
3891 Garbanzo Bean the Frost Mage (level 9, -13/42 HPs) Began as a Deep Elf Ice Elementalist on Aug 14, 2011. Was a Priest of Vehumet. Mangled by Gastronok (31 damage) ... on Level 9 of the Dungeon. The game lasted 01:12:32 (13514 turns).

My latest guy had some promising things going on before he got stomped in the face by a Goliath Beetle that 2-shot me
![]() I'm making a habit of finding cool items that are basically useless to my character. The latest find was the artefact amulet "Smufot" {cFly -CAST Str-2}. Controlled flight would be great if I could still cast my spells. but at 1,609, this is my best guy since the first. 16 deaths, nothing past level 7. Loving the game though ![]() |

Finally getting the hang of this character, just hit level 14. Found an artifact sword on the 8th level that has really helped me out. +3 str, +1 Int, rPoison, see Invisible, and flaming. Says it is a hydra killer. That helped me get a rune at the bottom of the snake pit. Thankfully, it was close to a set of stairs so I could easily run and hide when my magic ran out. Took forever to clear the all the Nagas out of there. I just wish I could find more spells though. I found a book of changes, but all the spells are pretty blah.

Although I still suck hardily, I wanna give credit to this competition (both characters included) for increasing my Crawl skillz exponentially. I pretty well ignored magic before the elementalist, and the troll character, although more of a brawler than I'm used to, actually forced me to think harder and strategerize about combat, once you get beyond the first 7-8 floors, which I never used to make it near in the first place.

Excellent work Klayman, looks like you are the first to actually grab a rune so far. Which god do you have? Both Sif Muna and Vehumet gift spell books pretty regularly.
That is an awesome sword. They call it hydra killer because if you use a normal sword against a hydra you'll cut it's head off and two more will grow in it's place. Pretty soon your 4 headed hydra turns into a 16 headed hydra and you are DEAD. A sword of flaming keeps this from happening. Of course a bit of Throw Icicle usually does the trick as well with our character.

Congrats on that Rune Klayman. Luckily Bluestar2 has found three spellbooks including one of Conjuration. I have access to Mephitic Cloud and Bolt of Cold now which is awesome, Poison Cloud too. and I have Freezing Cloud too....hmmm maybe I should cast all three at once?

heh yeah I've seen that chart before, pretty funny, especially the part about Sigmund. I don't think I've seen him or many uniques in my game with Bluestar2 yet other than the one level with four of them on it. I'm currently on Lair:6 though not by choice, was on Lair:4 and fell down a shaft. Never been down this far in the Lair, it should be an interesting (and hopefully not deadly) experience. I'll certainly be looking to take the first stair up I can find though.

Well a pack of death yak didn't seem much affected by my Mephitic Cloud/Freezing Cloud, so I hightailed it back to Level 5 of the Lair-first time I've seen them, but heard a lot about them, so wasn't ready to risk myself too much over them. I finally got an ID scroll and was able to fully ID my artifact amulet-its a brooch of shielding, giving me Warding as well as the boost to AC and EV.

And just like that its all over:
Code:
No one to blame but myself here-opened a door and a whole lot of bees were behind it. Wanted to challenge myself so tried taking them out with frozen and mephitic clouds which mostly worked other than the queen bee who was poisoning me pretty badly. Should have blinked and teleported away, but was kinda bored with the character and wanted to see how things would be different if I chose Sif Muna over Vehumet anyway. Which I will probably now regret when the next 10 characters get killed off before I reach the Temple so I can pick Sif Muna. ![]() |

Ouch, engulfed by own freezing vapour. Looks like it was shooting out of the door a space.
Here's a tip for that run. "Ice Form" turns you into a ice beast that gives poison resist and cold immunity. I have pretty much been in perpetual ice form throughout the hive, lair, and now swamp on this run. Ice Form - CrawlWiki Good luck on your next run!

And true to my prophecy Bluestar3 was killed on level 1 by an ooze when I ran out of mana to cast Freeze. Started running, got a mana point back, thought it might be enough to kill it, alas not to be. I found a ring before I was killed, guess what it was? Yep a ring of ice. arrrrgh.

This time I fall to an elf conjurer with a orb of energy. I had been pretty resistant to elves so I didn't really fear the big hit so much, but obviously he had one in the bag.
This was a really good run. I had just grabbed the swamp rune and stored it in my stash and was running right through the elvish halls. I was going to finish through level 6 and then head back to do the Shoals. 136858 Frigid the Eclecticist (level 16, -7/87 HPs) Began as a Deep Elf Ice Elementalist on Aug 16, 2011. Was the Champion of Vehumet. Killed from afar by a deep elf conjurer (34 damage) ... with an orb of energy ... on Level 4 of the Elven Halls on Aug 17, 2011. The game lasted 08:32:36 (68319 turns). Forum didn't like the morgue file so I deleted the vanquished list to make it a bit smaller.

Bluestar#6 or so has made it to Level 3 of the dungeon, interestingly enough with a dagger of venom and a amulet of the gourmand. No killer gnolls on the second level thank the gods.

Not quite. I was trying to get into a protected area on the Elven Halls. Not sure if there is a rune there, but there was a lot of elves. Anyway it was blocked off by water. I got over it once with a levitation potion, but I got banished to the Abyss. I thought it was over, but I eventually found the portal back. Then I was trying to use Dig to get through to the protected area when this stupid annihilator came around the corner and hit me with a crystal spear. Ouch.

Well the first 4 levels of Elven Halls is easy enough if you pay attention. Obviously I wasn't paying attention. Level 5 is a meatgrinder. Annihilators are really troublesome. But that is where the rune is. Usually you want to clear the first 4 then go do snake or slime pit before coming back. I lost my highest character ever a level 26 Hill Orc fighter to an Annihilator.
I just found out about the level changes in 0.8, previously Elven Halls was 7 levels deep and the first 6 were medium difficulty with 7 being the rune level. So If I had not died on 4 I probably would have been running around on 5 and got killed there anyway. Also I think we should have a no back to back winner kinda thing. So if I do end up on top I'll let second place pick the next race/class combo. Now I'm going to go start another attempt...

I agree with the Elven halls. I actually didn't have any sort of problem with them. I was easily on my way to my second rune until I got banished to the abyss, and that threw my game plan out of whack. Then I got fixated on getting back in there and was trying to learn the Dig spell when I got ambushed. After playing 6 hours of cautious, careful gaming, I had 5 mins of stupidity.
![]() I have to agree with what thesloppy said, in that the characters chosen have certainly helped in expanding and improving my gameplay style and made the game a lot more enjoyable. Last edited by klayman : 08-17-2011 at 11:06 PM. |

Was doing well till I reached a dreaded open level-I barely survived two attacks from ice beasts, then had to deal with what looked like a gnoll fort, complete with gnoll sergeants and shaman. One area had an uncrossable river with a bunch of net and missile throwing gnolls inside it. Was able to pick off some of them with spells, then second ice beast showed up. Had to put on my artifact ring which teleported me inside one of the rooms of the fort complete with a few mobs. Tried to use my ring to blink several times only to stay in the room, ran out of healing, so just hoped teleportation would kick in..it did not. Looks like I should have read my scrolls before dying instead. The activate teleport on the ring was very poor-tried it a few times with no success, so gave up. |

I've had like a dozen dudes since my last post, but they've alllllll sucked ass. Magic is fun, but those damned low hit points give you zero buffer against stupidity. I still don't have the discipline to know when to run away, and that's the key to survival 99% of the time in this game.

Hmmm. It appears that version 0.9.0 was released about a week ago. I'ma start messing around with that one, but it sounds like it has had some 'balance tweaks', so I dunno if they're scoring is drastically different.
Also appears they updated the online version to tiles recently, anybody ever futzed around with the online game? I think I played it for like 3 minutes and then stopped, so I don't have any particular opinions.

wow 0.9 came out a lot quicker than expected based on how long it took 0.8 to come out. Tried to post the changelog here, but didn't work for some reason so you can check it out yourself at:

You can not store up a bunch of experience and then repeatedly use a spell or action to level up a skill class. This was known as "Victory Dancing" and was kinda lame. Now any skills you have enabled for leveling that you used in the past hundred turns will increase.
They also increased starting health by a bit and made it where fighting did not add so much health each level. Would help our fragile deep elf out a lot. All characters also now carry a boot knife for cutting up corpses, so you don't have to pick up the first blade you see and it doesn't take up an inventory slot. As far as webtiles, it's a bit laggy compared to the offline tiles version, but that might be good so you don't make hasty decisions. The cool thing about it is you can spectate other people playing. I was watching a lvl 27 clear ziggerauts the other day. I've played 284 online games with the console version. I really like that they keep your stats online and you can retrieve old morgue files easily. Here is my CAO account stats Londar

Lonnie 136,858 Klayman 123,719 Ozias 41,506 Thomkal 19,032 thesloppy 3,891 Vince 1,049 Thanks for playing along. Looking back I probably should have went with a little beefier race than a deep elf, maybe a high elf. I hope you learned a bit about spell casting in the process. If an effort to keep everyone involved I am going to pass this win on to Klayman for the race/class selection for competition #3. If you have trouble picking, here is a short list of easy combos for beginners Background and race combinations for beginners - CrawlWiki I also suggest we go with 0.9 for the next competition.

I wondered why the comp was over when I asked and was told it was today.
The deadline was just early today that's all. Congrats to Lonnie! and to Klayman for finishing second. If you are open to suggestions let me know but if you're dying to try something, that's cool of course. Yeah we might as well go with 0.9. I've downloaded it but haven't tried it yet, but curious to see if I like the changes to the skill system. |

I did learn a lot about spellcasting-tend to be not too fond of the full spellcasting classes as dying from starvation and always having to worry about that just isn't fun to me. But it was fun seeing how powerful they can get when they reach level 10 or so.

Yeah, I defer to somebody with more experience. The combos I have tried are the Hill Orc Priest, Kobold Chaos Knight, and the Demonspawn Wizard. I like the randomness of the mutations in the Chaos Knight and Demonspawn, and the followers of the Hill Orc Priest, but it's more important that everybody enjoys playing the character. I don't know how 'fun' any of those choices are. |

One of my suggestions would have been a Demonspawn Chaos Knight the Crawl equivalent of the Zangband BeastMan Chaos Warrior. Xom is unlike the other gods in that you don't really worship him, you just hope he likes you enough to give/do good things to/for you. Because if you ever hear, "XOM is Bored!" watch out! The bad things can be really bad till you amuse him somehow. And the gifts he gives can be, well, less than good. Like a choko(god gift). Combined with a Demonspawn's mutations, it's a combination that makes what really is just a fighter which could get boring after a while, into a you never know what to expect next fighter. Here's a primer on Xom if you don't mind be spoiled: Xom - CrawlWiki Other suggestions would be to go to the stealthy route with a Halfling Hunter or Assassin. The Assassin in particular plays a whole different way as you try to sneak up on every mob you can to deliver a devastating backstab. And you might want to explore what backgrounds work best with a draconian. At level 7 they gain one of several colors which give them abilities that can determine your future path in terms of skills to use/way to play from that point on. Monk or Artificer could be good choices there. And if you're tired of worrying about food and carrying around weapons/armor till you can figure out what they are and what will work best for you, a Ghoul Monk takes care of that nicely. A old background that was removed from 0.8 (Crusader) has returned in 0.9 with a new name, Skald, and is a warrior-mage hybrid with spells than enhance your weapon with elemental power (fire, cold, and poison) and spells that protect you (a new shield spell, regeneration, and repel missiles. Another good choice for Draconian if you want to use that race. Hope these help, go with whatever sounds coolest to you Klayman! Last edited by Thomkal : 08-21-2011 at 10:37 AM. |

I'm still trying to work with Merfolk Assassin, but man it's fucking hard. Despite talking about how this competition has increased my CRAWL abilities, none of those skills seem to carry over to Assassin.

I just played a game as an Orcish Priest that was quite a bit of fun. The ability to get the orcs to follow you is pretty damn cool, and helpful. Well until you read a scroll that explodes and they all get pissed and kill you, but the way of the game.
