There is no way these movies get changed like this without it being George's idea in the first place. He wants that crap in there.

George Lucas offers a compelling argument against George Lucas

“These current defacements are just the beginning. Today, engineers with their computers can add color to black-and-white movies, change the soundtrack, speed up the pace, and add or subtract material to the philosophical tastes of the copyright holder. Tomorrow, more advanced technology will be able to replace actors with ‘fresher faces,’ or alter dialogue and change the movement of the actor’s lips to match. It will soon be possible to create a new ‘original’ negative with whatever changes or alterations the copyright holder of the moment desires….

In the future it will become even easier for old negatives to become lost and be ‘replaced’ by new altered negatives. This would be a great loss to our society. Our cultural history must not be allowed to be rewritten…. Attention should be paid to the interest of those who are yet unborn, who should be able to see this generation as it saw itself, and the past generation as it saw itself.”

Yes of course, silly me for thinking when I bought the Trilogy special edition that it would be the definitive DVD version of the movies - this is George Lucas we're talking about. Why do that, when he can release individual special edition version DVD's that actually do contain the original theatrical versions. If he had added those to the Trilogy special edition, then there'd be no reason for me to spend extra money buying the individual special edition versions that have the content I actually want...

From what I remember, there was a big uproar about that and I think about a year later they started throwing in the extra disc that had the original theatrical versions. However, there was nothing done to them to clean them up. I only have Episode 4, it doesn't look too bad, but, could have used some cleaning up at the very least. I can burn a copy and send it to you.

Looks like a 3rd change to Return of the Jedi has been leaked.

I'm way way more pissed that it's been 3.5 years since Blu Ray won, and Star Wars is finally coming out. I can deal with a few changes and I'm excited to get the 6 movie set.

I'll only watch these if he picks me and 4 of my friends up in a vintage Gremlin and makes me stand in line for 2 hours before seeing it. Otherwise it's a slap in the face to my childhood. I also want to go to Burger King afterward.

At least the new project from Lucas Films looks good.

The main thing I'm worried about...I haven't ran into ANYONE at work that says they worked on this. Which means one of two things to me...1. This was farmed out to a 3rd party like the DVDs were or 2. That the changes are so bad, no one at work is willing to admit they worked on it.

Now, usually through the old grape vine, you hear what people are working on. I've heard people talk about the 3D versions of the movies, nothing about the blu-rays though. Either way, I would find it hard to believe that George didn't sign off on any of the changes or wasn't aware of what was changed.

Did you work on them?

EXACTLY!

All this hullabaloo reminds me of a great Patton Oswalt bit.

More changes leaked from the Blu Ray release. With the redemption of Darth Vader at the end of Jedi, George Lucas didn't want to make his character seem too evil. That brings us this slight change to A New Hope.

I agree with this. There are some director's cuts that suck, but for the most part they are way better. For example, Cameron Crowe's Almost Famous is a great movie but the Untitled director's cut of it is even better.

I think its all part of a global plan to release a 'very special' edition BluRay which is actually the originals unedited ....

Any idea how to get a copy of this? I couldn't find it on netflix, and it isn't available for sale either. Always wanted to see it, not willing to spend 50+ to buy it.

Unfortunately, it is out of print. If you don't want it used, your best bet is to keep watching Ebay and see if there is a lower price. I lost my original copy and eventually got it from Ebay for $40 when I saw the price drop.
