Second and Ten: NFL Replay (1933 - )
I'm doing a bit of an experiment with this so I will drop it if it becomes too much work. One of the things I don't like about "historical replay sims" is that they focus almost entirely on single-season replay and not multiple season replays and Second and Ten is no exception. But I'm going to do two things to try to get some sort of multiple season replay here.
1) I'll redo the schedule for each season based on the standings of the previous year. However, schedules didn't become standardized (teams played different number of games in the 1930s) until 1937. And even then, while they played their in-division opponents twice, I'm not sure how out of division was scheduled. But, that's when I'll start redoing the schedule. 2) I'll redo the draft every year. The Top 10 picks, I'll redo completely. If The Colts get the #5 pick in 1998, they don't get Manning (looks like they'll get Leaf...if he's still there.). For Picks 11 to the end of the first round, if a team picks with 5 picks of their historical spot, they'll automatically get the same guy (this is to help ease the amount of work I'm going to need to put into this.) So in 1998 again, if the Vikings have the 25th pick instead of the 21st pick, they'll still automatically get Randy Moss. And of course, I'm going to try my best to keep it historical. So, I'm not going to have the #2 or #3 team take Moss. Another draft rule I have is that if the player they took is still on the board when their pick is made, they have to take him (outside of the top 10), and I will strongly lean towards it in the top 10 as well. But, I'll try to be historical and reasonable with the picks. If the Bears have the #1 pick in 1998, they're taking Manning, not Curtis Enis. But I do remember there being a bit of an argument over who to take. Leaf of Manning. Maybe I'll make it interesting. If the Colts don't get the #1 pick, I'll make it a 75% chance the #1 team takes Manning and 25% they take Leaf....? Maybe. We'll see. Here's an example for picks 11-15 in the 1998 draft. Let's say the draft order for my recreation looks like this: 11: Cincinnati (1998 - 13th) 12: Pittsburgh (1998 - 26th) 13: Jacksonville (1998 - 9th) 14: Minnesota Vikings (1998 - 21st) 15: New England (1998 - 18th) Jacksonville's original pick was the 9th pick (they got in a trade with Buffalo and for the sake of the example, let's say the trade still goes through). They are within 5 picks of their original pick, but since their original pick is in the top 10, we'll wait until after the top 10 picks are taken and see if Fred Taylor is still available. Cincinnati is 2 picks off their original pick, so they automatically get LB Takeo Spikes. New England is 3 off, so they automatically get RB Robert Edwards. And let's say, after the top 10, Fred Taylor is still there, so the Jaguars automatically get him. Now it looks like this. 11: Cincinnati: LB Takeo Spikes 12: Pittsburgh: 13: Jacksonville: RB Fred Taylor 14: Minnesota: 15: New England: RB Robert Edwards Now I need to do a bit of research. From what I've heard from the staff of the 1998 Vikings over the years is that they were going to take Moss and that they always targeted him, and that a lot of other teams were hesitant to take him. The Steelers, I have no idea nor do I think I'm going to find out. So, staying of the side of least amount of work, the Vikings still get Moss. With the 26th pick, the Steelers took G Alan Faneca. Looking at that draft, there were a few Tackles taken before Faneca, but no guards. But I'll look at their roster and see if they need help elsewhere. For example, in 1998, LB Keith Brooking was taken with the 11th pick. Maybe it makes sense of the Steelers to take an LB in that spot. They also look like, judging from their roster in Second And Ten for 1997 and 1998, they could use a bit more help at Tackle than at Guard. Siding with the side of "least amount of work", considering that Faneca was the first guard taken in the 1998 draft, I would lean towards simply having the Steelers take him at 11 anyway. So here's how the draft turns out 11: Cincinnati: LB Takeo Spikes 12: Pittsburgh: OG Alen Faneca 13: Jacksonville: RB Fred Taylor 14: Minnesota: WR Randy Moss 15: New England: RB Robert Edwards As you can see, they all still get the same guy. That's what I'll be trying to lean towards to limit the amount of work I have to do. Only when it will really make sense to change a draft pick from their historical pick will I do that. 3) Trades. This will get tricky. Player trades....I guess I'll have to take this as a case-for-case basis. If the trade makes sense, I'll still do, and I'll be very lenient with "if it makes sense". IOW, I don't want to not do a trade unless it really doesn't fit anymore. For every trade I block, I have to edit the two teams in question. Pick-for-pick trades and player-for-pick trades I'll probably do regardless. 4) Free Agents and Retirement. For the sake of simplicity, free agents leave when they historically leave....within reason. If the Bengals are in the playoffs and making the Super Bowl once or twice, does Carson Palmer leave? Would the same have been true for Barry Sanders? Questions that are a long way off.... (like how am I going to handle ratings for players that are not on their historical teams....not 100% sure yet.) Anyway, let's do this. All of this work won't start for a few seasons so I can flesh it out later. And honestly, I am not going to find tons of information on the first few decades of drafts. I doubt I'll be redoing much of the draft for a long, long time. |

Well, I was going to post the rosters for each team, but there doesn't seem to be a way to output them....
Oh well, you can find them here: http://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/1933/ Last edited by sabotai : 09-15-2011 at 02:04 AM. |

The game outputs a nice looking Week Summery to a printer, but for some reason, not to HTML. I tried printing it to a text file, but it doesn't keep its formatting. Also tried printing it to OneNote and XPS, but I can't get it to copy and past into the forum or Word (won't keep its formatting).

One thing I've noticed is that it doesn't do a very good job of simulating early football. Or maybe the early seasons just aren't rated properly. Right now, the Boston Redskins have run the ball almost as many times than they did in the entire 1933 season (436 vs. 466). So the early seasons statistics are going to be completely out of place.

Week 10
Chicago Bears 14 Boston Redskins 31 Chi Bears Passing: Red Grange 3/6, 63 yards, 1 INT ; Keith Molesworth 3/6, 71 yards, 1 TD Rushing: Red Gange 14 carries, 73 yards; Keith Molesworth 13 carries, 38 yards, 1 TD Receiving: Bill Hewitt 4 rec, 72 yards, 1 TD Defense: Joe Kopcha 17 tackles Boston Passing: Steve Hokuf 1/5, 31 yards Rushing: Cliff Battles 30 carries, 138 yards, 2 TD; Roy Hortsmann 11 carries, 41 yards Receiving: Ike Frankian 1 rec, 31 yards Defense: Marger Apsit 7 tackles, 1 INT This is an example of what I was talking about. Cliff Battles got about 11 carries per game (and that's his rating in the game), but he keeps getting it ~30 times per game. The game is distributing the runs like it should, but then Battles gets a bloated stat. I think it may be a problem with the Option Pass and that Battles is just running each time it's called. I don't think it's a problem with the rating. Bronko Nagurski has a high rating for the Option Pass but his rushing attempts look fine. I did notice that Battles wasn't rating for throwing, even though he had his real life stats inputted. So I calculated his passing ratings and we'll see if that changes anything. Pittsburgh Pirates 3 Brooklyn Dodgers 27 Pittsburgh Passing: Tony Holm 5/9, 65 yards, 2 INT; Bill Tanguay 2/4, 17 yards, 2 INT Rushing: Tony Holm 10 carries, 32 yards; Angelo Brovelli 9 carries, 32 yards Receiving: Ray Tesser 6 rec, 74 yards Defense: Clarence Janecek 7 tackles Brooklyn Passing: Chris Cagle 4/6, 35 yards, 1 TD; Benny Friedman 4/5, 41 yards, 1 TD Rushing: Shipwreck Kelly 13 carries, 59 yards; Bull Karcis 11 carries, 49 yards Receiving: Shipwreck Kelly 4 rec, 19 yards, 2 TD Defense: Bull Karcis 10 tackles, 1 INT; Doc Morrison 7 tackles, 1 INT Green Bay Packers 10 Chicago Cardinals 13 Green Bay Passing: Arnie Herber 5/12, 34 yards, 2 INT Rushing: Clarke Hinkle 11 carries, 8 yards; Bob Monnett 9 carries, 38 yards; Hank Bruder 8 carries, 43 yards, 1 TD Receiving: Lavvie Dilweg 2 rec, 19 yards Defense: Rudy Comstock 7 tackles, Paul Young 7 tackles, Clarke Hinkle 7 tackles Chi Cards Passing: Joe Lillard 3/12, 31 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT Rushing: Dick Nesbitt 26 carries, 118 yards; Joe Lillard 25 carries, 82 yards Receiving: Milan Creighton 3 rec, 29 yards, 1 TD Defense: Gil Bergerson 7 tackles, Les Malloy 7 tackles Philadelphia Eagles 26 Cincinnati Reds 7 Philadelphia Passing: Red Kirkman 2/3, 14 yards, 2 TD Rushing: Reb Russell 30 carries, 87 yards; Swede Hanson 17 carries, 64 yards, 1 TD Receiving: George Kenneally 1 rec, 10 yards, 1 TD; Swede Hanson 1 rec, 4 yards, 1 TD Defense: Jack Roberts 7 tackles, 1 FF Cincinnati Passing: Jim Bausch 4/16, 25 yards, 2 INT; Lew Pope 4/13, 64 yards Rushing: Lee Mulleneaux 8 carries, 30 yards; Lew Pope 4 carries, 32 yards, 1 TD Receiving: Joe Crakes 4 rec, 32 yards Defense: Lee Mulleneaux 13 tackles, 1 FF; Biff Lee 12 tackles Portsmouth Spartans 16 New York Giants 7 Portsmouth Passing: Glenn Presnell 0/6, 1 INT; Ace Gutowsky 1/1, 1 yard Rushing: Glenn Presnell 30 carries, 65 yards, 1 TD; Ace Gutowsky 13 carries, 79 yards Receiving: John Schneller 1 rec, 1 yard Defense: George Christensen 6 tackles New York Passing: Harry Newman 0/9, 2 INT; Bo Molenda 1/1, 8 yards Rushing: Harry Newman 12 carries, 82 yards Receiving: Red Badgro 1 rec, 8 yards Defense: Bo Molenda 14 tackles; Butch Gibson 13 tackles |

NFL 1933 - Week 15 Summary
Standings
Results Boston Redskins 21 Chicago Cardinals 0 Brooklyn Dodgers 14 Cincinnati Reds 0 Pittsburgh Pirates 0 New York Giants 32 Green Bay Packers 7 Philadelphia Eagles 6 Chicago Bears 35 Portsmouth Spartans 0 Looks like the Championship Game has been decided. In 1933, the NFL did not count tie games in their standings (this went on until the 70s I think). Therefore, Brooklyn benefits and Boston gets screwed. 7-2 is a better win percentage than 9-3. Only 2 games in the final week, the Bears vs. Packers and Giants vs. Eagles. If the Bears lose, they still win the division. |

1933 NFL Championship
Well....both teams averaged under 3 yards per carry on the ground. A defensive battle that almost ended regulation with a 0-0 tie. We almost had our first overtime game in the first championship. |

NFL 1933 Real Life vs. NFL 1933 Replay
1933 Records, Replay record (Real Life record) Eastern Division 1. Brooklyn Dodgers 7-2-1 (5-4-1) 2. Boston Redskins 9-3-0 (5-5-2) 3. New York Giants 8-6-1 (11-3-0) 4. Philadelphia Eagles 4-5-0 (3-5-1) 5. Pittsburgh Pirates 2-8-1 (3-6-2) Western Division 1. Chicago Bears 8-3-2 (10-2-1) <-- Champs in both real life and replay 2. Portsmouth Spartans 6-5-0 (6-5-0) 3. Green Bay Packers 4-6-3 (5-7-1) 4. Chicago Cardinals 3-7-1 (1-9-1) 5. Cincinnati Reds 1-8-1 (3-6-1) Not too far off. Many teams were within 1 or 2 wins/loses of their real life record, and Portsmouth was spot on. The only two teams that were a bit off were the Giants (3 more loses in replay) and Redskins (4 more wins). One difference is that there was a lot more scoring in the replay than in real life. The highest scoring team in the replay, the Chicago Bears, had 237 points in the replay, but only 133 in real life. The Redskins scored 232 points in the replay, but only 103 in real life. In real life, the Giants were an offensive power and scored 244, 13 more than the 231 they scored in the replay. And some other teams came in at under their real life points total, but overall, scoring was higher (1494 in replay vs. 1105 in real life) I think the issue is that there were a lot more plays in the replay than in real life. In real life, 5,749 plays. In the replay, 6,619. I used whatever the default settings were. For the next season, I'll tick the Timing setting down one or two spots to decrease the number of plays some. |

The game only allows each team to be scheduled once per week, which means these early seasons need to have the weeks broken up since it was common for teams to play more than once in a single week. I figured I'd just keep calling them weeks to avoid confusion with the HTML outputs. |

However, that was because of a 64-0 blow out of the Reds. Take that out and they gave up more points. |

NFL 1934 - Week 14 Summary
Full Standings
Week 14 Results Brooklyn Dodgers 14 Pittsburgh Pirates 43 Boston Redskins 6 Philadelphia Eagles 6 Chicago Cardinals 0 Green Bay Packers 18 Cincinnati Reds 0 Detroit Lions 61 Chicago Bears 7 New York Giants 10 This version of the 1934 Bears aren't fairing as well as their real life counterparts while Detroit, 10-3 in 1934, is looking to take advantage. The Cincinnati Reds are doing as well as they did in real life. In fact better, since in 1934 the Reds stopped paying their dues to the league and were kicked out (The St. Louis Gunners came in and played their last 3 games). In this replay, at least they get to stick around. Week 15 Games Nov 25th Philadelphia Eagles at Brooklyn Dodgers Boston Redskins at New York Giants Chicago Cardinals at Chicago Bears Green Bay Packers at Detroit Lions |

NFL 1934 - Week 15 Summary
Full Standings
Week 15 Results Philadelphia Eagles 0 Brooklyn Dodgers 21 Boston Redskins 0 New York Giants 31 Chicago Cardinals 0 Chicago Bears 21 Green Bay Packers 3 Detroit Lions 28 Wow, all 4 losing teams combined for 3 total points. The Bears are now two games out of first place with two to play. Lucky for them, their last two games both are against the Lions. NY and Philly also play in the final week of the season and that game could determine the winner of the east. Week 16 Games Nov 29th New York Giants at Brooklyn Dodgers Green Bay Packers at Chicago Cardinals Chicago Bears at Detroit Lions Week 17 Games Dec 2 Brooklyn Dodgers at Boston Redskins Detroit Lions at Chicago Bears Green Bay Packers at Cincinnati Reds New York Giants at Philadelphia Eagles |

NFL 1935
A few new changes for the next season going forward. 1) I'm in the mood for a bit more alt-history, so I'm going to start randomizing injuries. In the game, there is no Free Agent pool for teams to take from when an injury occurs. Some players that should have gotten injured didn't because of the minimum player requirement for positions prevented them from becoming injured. So I'm going to start doing two things. First, I'll create a few scrubs per position on each team before the season starts so that they exceed the position requirements, and secondly, I'm going to input a random INJ rating for each player. Some players may have only played 1 or two games in real life and if they did very well in those games, their rating may be inflated, so I'll be looking out for that as well. 2) I'm tired of seeing a blank Sacks stat. Before the start of each season, I'll use the "Estimate Sacks" button to assign a sacks value to each defensive player so that Sacks will show up for the defense now. 3) Looking at the standings, all of the teams in the NFL in 1935 played 12 games except for 2, the Eagles and Redskins. They played 11. However, I look at the schedule and see the Giants play the Bears twice, in back-to-back weeks, but don't play the Lions at all. So, like I said, I'm in a more of an alt-history mood, so I'm going to redo the schedules. There's a problem though. If I do play 2x vs. divisional rivals and 1x vs. the opposite division, the East will play 12 games and the West will play 11.....eh, close enough. |
