Official College Football thread - Week 6

The weekend kick off with Cal traveling to play Oregon. On Saturday, there are quite a few good matchups of Top 25 teams:

Florida at LSU
Auburn at Arkansas
and the Red River Shootout, Texas vs. Oklahoma at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas

@Josh_Ward: RB Bryce Brown is done playing college football and plans to prepare for the NFL Draft, per @JimmyHyams.

UNLV/UNR game this Saturday in Reno. We'll probably lose by like 100 even with Kapernick to the NFL.

I have mixed feelings about this kid. On the one hand, what a waste of a great opportunity to get an education while building up his case for playing in the NFL. On the other hand, if college football were truly amateur and an actual professional football minor league existed, he'd be the perfect candidate for that kind of set-up.

Couple of guys on another board are big UGA/UT fans, so they're trying to one-up each other posting pics and vids of the other school's fans. A select few awesome ones:

Michigan goes to Northwestern tonight. Persa will be playing for the Wildcats which makes me leery, but I don't see how Northwestern can outscore us. That said, I've learned never to underestimate them, especially at home.

You confused me there for a second - you mean "this week", not "tonight", right?

Well, I am hoping the Wizard of Oz was kind and granted my beloved Seminoles a running game during their bye week. Hopefully we can use the next couple of ACC matchups as glorified scrimmages and get some things worked out on the O-Line. I'm still really excited about this season and like a lot of things I see about this team, but realistically, thank goodness we are in the craptacular ACC. Any other AQ conference (yes, even the Big East) and we would probably be in some real trouble...

Iowa travels to Penn St. who we pretty much own. We are going no huddle on offense which is a huge change in philosophy for our program. And we will blitz a lot more, which is another big change for our program.
The results of the no huddle have been very good so far. Hopefully that continues. Our defense isnt very good right now. But I dont think PsUs offense is much better then our defense.
We should win by 2 TDs.

Weather might be an issue for the Red River Shootout. Right now the forecast is a 40% chance of thunderstorms on Saturday.

Ill take Penn St +14 vs the team that lost to and gave up 44 points to Iowa St.

The Penn St defense probably wont even give up 14 points to Iowa. They have a pathetic offense but a top 10 defense.

They held the ball for 35 minutes and didn't turn it over. Alabama has put up 38-48 in their other encounters, so PSU essentially took 10 points off their norm against tough competition.

Temple and Indiana have put up 10 points on PSU. I'll take Iowa putting up 21-24 against PSU.

You must be fooled into thinking Iowa is actually good this year. They have their worst offensive line since Ferentz first started coaching this team in the late 90s. The reason they went to this no huddle is because their offensive line cant create any holes for Coker. Whether or not they score 14 will depend on if they go no huddle and if the Penn St offense can create field position. In either case Ill take the Penn St +14.

Hawkeye fans may spin it as Ferentz opening up the playbook when in reality it is the only option because of a lot of weaknesses on the o-line. They know the line is below average and if Ferentz had it his way they would be pounding Coker 30 times a game.

And considering the great field position Alabama had the entire game because of Penn Sts lack of offense I would consider holding them to 27 points a fine defensive effort.

A couple of weeks ago Garrett Gilbert announced that we was out for the season due to shoulder surgery. Now he announces he will be transferring next year. A case of the potential not meeting the reality.

I think 'Bama is decently balanced. They lack the long ball, but do decent elsewhere. I think one of the things that holds 'Bama back offensively is that once they get a lead they know they can keep due to their defense they shut down. Them playing PSU the last two years are great examples of this. Even the announcers mentioned it. I know there are other examples as well. A number of 'Bama's scores late are once the other team mails it in, or via TOs as the opponents keep trying to come back. My biggest grip of last year's team is that they turned it on and off on a as needed basis instead of going in and posting 30-40 on whoever they played.

Peter Gardere. The only QB on either side to win 4 straight games in the Red River Shootout. I was there for three of them. Good times.

So what went wrong at Cal?

I remembered making an argument on this board about Cal being a rising team that would eventually challenge for championships in the PAC-10. Those comments were in early October 2007. Since then Cal has played 51 games with a record of 27-24. In the 51 games before my comments, Cal was 39-12. At the time of my comments, Cal was due to make major facilities upgrades and appeared to be doing well in fund raising according to various news reports I read.

Any thoughts/ideas on what caused them to become mediocre rather than continue to get better?

People thought Jeff Tedford was a QB guru that coached up average players, who then went onto disappointing NFL careers (David Carr, Kyle Boller, etc)... but it turned out Aaron Rodgers was actually a really good QB and he hasn't been able to get a player that good since?

They are a speed team in the Pac-10 however other teams in the Pac-10 have become speed teams as well and better at it. Oregon specifically.

Iowa will go 100% no huddle. It isnt because their offensive line is weak. Its because Their QB feels more comfortable in it. While I agree this isnt one of Iowas best O lines, it isnt weak. Another reason for the offensive shift is the 3 very good WRs we have. And spreading the field will open holes for Coker.

And, as we all know, Iowa owns Penn St.

Just had a random thought pop into my head: assuming there's the usual 2-3 losses toward the bottom of the top 25 this weekend, does the winner of UT-UGA end up ranked next week? I'm not saying that they should be, I'm just wondering if it might work out that way.

Well if they let the poll keep going UGA would be 32nd and Tenn would be 37th so I think there is a solid chance the winner would sneak in around 24th or 25th, especially if that team were UGA.

Hmm ... I think a 1-loss UT has an even better chance than a 2-loss UGA, especially since all three losses have been to ranked teams. Realistically, neither will have exactly beaten a high end opponent after this weekend no matter which one wins, difference being that the Vols would have a better win (Cincy) on their resume than the Dawgs (UT).

In sad news, Mike Puskar, co-owner and former CEO of Mylan Inc. (a huge pharmaceutical company) passed away last night. He was WVU's most high profile donor and the namesake for our stadium. As well as one of the largest employers in Morgantown.

I'm sure his contributions were being counted on in the conference realignment shuffle (where it is being reported that the Big East is holding tight to its teams' buyouts and that WVU will need to invest in its facilities and/or add athletic programs if it wants to join another conference), but this is unfortunate news on a few levels.

34 points with 11 yards rushing by Oklahoma in a half. If this doesn't make Jones the #2 QB behind Luck, I'm not sure what will.

Watching this UT/OU debacle is frustrating. Mizzou lost by 10 in Norman. Really wish MU would have found a way to get over the hump down there. It's very clear that OU is the top dog. They've faced down the early challenges very well and have an easier schedule down the stretch.

Didn't make the comment before, but it looks like it's going to happen. Basically OU is going to show how well endowed it is even though being #1 at the start of the season and then going undefeated apparently isn't enough to make a team think it will make the title game.

Maryland O-Lineman Andrew Gonnella hurt badly on a 3rd and 1 run. No idea exactly what happened, they brought an ambulance out on the field and kept him pretty well surrounded and the announcers described it as a "gruesome leg injury that we're not going to be showing you".

A variety of things:

Tedford whiffed on recruiting/developing good QBs;
Tedford lost some good assistants - losing Jim Michalczek in 2009 hurt a lot (he's back now);
Oregon took a significant step forward when Chip Kelly arrived;
Stanford transformed from a complete mess to a top-10 team under Harbaugh;
Washington is no longer under terrible management;

I wouldn't give up on Cal though - they still recruit like a mofo with Tosh Lupoi on staff, and Tedford has decided to become more hands-on with the offense like he was when he first took the job.

GT isn't particularly impressive holding on for a 21-16 win over Maryland but it does make them 6-0 and (according to the anncrs) the first team to become bowl eligible this season.

What a fucking stupid rule. I couldnīt care less for either team and am propably as much against showboating as anyone, but its not like he did a dance or sth... Seriously, can you really blame a freaking punter for getting excited about scoring a TD ?
