Memory Foam Mattresses -- Worth it or not?

We just bought a Serta iComfort foam mattress today and are now having second thoughts. Not really sure why as we have 120 days to try it out, etc. but still worried at how much it was (1800) and if it will really be worth it in the long run.

Anyone have actual experience with memory foam mattress and thoughts?

My folks bought one and love it. My dad says that it's made his neck (which he's had chronic issues with) feel better.

I've got a memory foam mattress topper, it's about 5" thick. I love the thing. And it saves my mattress.

Yea, I don't have the money for a $1500+ memory foam mattress so I went with a topper and its great. Something to consider.

Although, I wonder what its like to go from the $1800 bed to the topper and not the other way around.

My back is a bit of a wreck. I have a memory foam that is nice... Is it the best? No. I bought it on ebay for $500. But the difference between this & a regular mattress is amazing.

If I ever get a job that allows me to pay off my condo I may spring for one of those Sealy mattresses infused with gel. That sucker felt like heaven when I tried it in a store.

That's what we got but Serta brand. Gel infused foam.

We have a topper also and it makes our mattress feel so much better. I also have a memory foam pillow as I have neck issues and it has been a huge help.

We are also getting the gel infused mattress when we do spring for a new bed.

Same with other guys- I love our mattress with a 5" foam topper. I don't know about an entire mattress of it, but the topper is wonderful and I won't go back

We bought a discontinued Sealy Posturepedic Spring Free latex/memory foam matress, and I don't think I could go back to anything else. I used to have shoulder pains and they have all went away. My back would also hurt and hasn't since we got this mattress. The original price on it was $3000, but we got it for $1500 and I would easily pay that again.

We've had a king size tempurpedic for ~ 3yrs. Wasn't sure about it at first as it was a bit hard\stiff but the salesman said it would become softer over the first month of use. It did and now I absolutely love it.

Same feel night after night and my back has been great (used to have many days with stiffness and pain). I actually made my first chiropractor visit in about 4 years a couple of months ago. Small adjustments in two sessions took care of any pain and stiffness I was having, haven't been back since. Big improvement over the years before when going to the chiropractor once or twice a year was not unusual.

We've had the Costco NovaForm mattress for years. It's great. Much better than a spring mattress. The only problem is that it is definitely hot.

I always thought the topper was a waste, but I am so glad my wife pushed for it. We don't have too big of one yet, but we are looking to upgrade to a 4" one at least. The one we have has lasted us 5 years and is amazing. I imagine the mattress itself isn't a whole lot different, so I'd just save the money and get the topper

I always wonder what the difference between the $2000 memory foam and the $600 one are. And if it's a matter of X years vs Y years, I'm probably more comfortable tossing my mattress sooner rather than later.

We've had one for several years as well. One of the best decisions we've made with splurging for something a little nicer. I hope that you will love it as much as we do!

My family used to be in the furniture business. The mattress business is interesting. Everything is always on sale. MSRP is way inflated. They put a 3000 price tag on a mattress, and sell it for 1500 every day of the year. The big players, like Sealy have always done it. Everybody else has to do it too. Another manufacturer can't price their equivalent product for $1500, because the consumer says 'I can get that mattress over there for the same price, and it is a $3000 mattress'. No one ever pays the suggested retail.

We have an IComfort that we bought around 45 days ago. The mattress we had I was having all sorts of issues in the morning where I felt like a truck ran over me at night.

It took around 4 nights for me to get used to the new bed. I did not sleep well at all and I think I woke up every hour. Once I adjusted to it I've been sleeping great and I don't feel like crap in the morning.

We've had a Sealy foam mattress for about 5 years, and the one thing we've grown to hate about it is that we have to fix the sheets at least once or twice a night. They slip off really easy (we sit up in bed watching TV or reading, etc., 2-4 hours a night). And you have to buy a particular type of sheet that fits the bed. Also, comforters that match the size mattress you have are short on the sides because this kind of mattress is slightly taller, so you really need to buy a size up or else you're fighting with your wife/GF for the covers all night.

My wife is definitely more annoyed than I am with it and wants to get something different, but given the cost and the fact that the mattress is still quite functional, I don't see that happening any time soon.

Have you tried sheet straps?

I don't know what it was my wife tried years ago, but whatever it was, it didn't work.

Between the wine and the blindfold, I'm not really sure I can accurately answer the question.

Guess I will be counterpoint...

We tried one. I wanted to love it, but just couldn't. As stated sheets never stayed on, we tried the elastic straps, they weren't any better.

It was comfortable enough I suppose, but insanely hot. I sweat a lot when I sleep anyway..but I would wake up in a puddle...a literal puddle. After not quite a month we had a horrible stench in our bedroom and after more work than it should ahve been we inda discovered the smell was sweat soaked into the damn thing.

THe 90 day no question ask return policy was anything but so we aired it out and then moved it to a guest room.

We didn't like ours either. It took a few weeks to "break in" untill we felt comfortable, but it was never completely comfortable. Because of the price, we kept it for a few years and finally last summer I had just had enough and we freecycled it.

Never had issues with the sheets, being to hot, etc. Just not very comfortable.

We have now used it two nights. Heat is not an issue with this thing at all. Whatever Serta introduced to deal with that problem is more than solved.

I definitely feel like I'm much less likely to toss and turn. I feel like I'm sleeping pretty solid through the night without much pressure on my joints at all. Back has been a little stiff both mornings and I'm sure it's because of the firmness of the bed.

Still will take some time but we're both liking it so far.

I have a tempurpedic. It was weird at first since it does not feel like a regular mattress and there is no bounce when you sit on it. But it is awesome and contributes to a great nights sleep. I recommend that you pay for a mattress protective cover. They are very thin and waterproof.

We bought one. I never realized the importance of one as it relates to your warranty.

This thread is an eye opener. I've always just bought the cheapest mattress available and never had any problems sleeping. It's just something I never thought about.

We didn't go completely cheap but we went like $500 for a king with a foam topper and we love it.
