NYTimes Op-Ed: Why I Am Leaving Goldman Sachs

This will be zinging around the Internet. To channel Bill Simmons, he took a page out of Dylan McCay's book: "May the bridges I burn light the way!"

Why I Am Leaving Goldman Sachs - NYTimes.com

Quote:
TODAY is my last day at Goldman Sachs. After almost 12 years at the firm — first as a summer intern while at Stanford, then in New York for 10 years, and now in London — I believe I have worked here long enough to understand the trajectory of its culture, its people and its identity. And I can honestly say that the environment now is as toxic and destructive as I have ever seen it.

To put the problem in the simplest terms, the interests of the client continue to be sidelined in the way the firm operates and thinks about making money. Goldman Sachs is one of the world’s largest and most important investment banks and it is too integral to global finance to continue to act this way. The firm has veered so far from the place I joined right out of college that I can no longer in good conscience say that I identify with what it stands for.

If there is a Humblebrag Hall of Fame, Greg Smith's op-ed piece should be engraved floor-to-ceiling in entryway.

No shit. Is he giving back all the millions he's made doing everything that he lists as the reasons he's leaving? And puffing himself up with his accomplishments in the process.

Unfortunately everything he wrote is completely accurate in my own experience.

Short version: When I was young I was dumb enough to think that companies actually believed their internal mission statements about helping customers, but then I got older.

I would modify this to: When I was young I was dumb enough to think that companies actually believed their internal mission statements about helping customers, but then I got rich enough that it was easy for me to walk away and point the finger at others.

I haven't looked yet but has the smear campaign started? It's easy to let the words speak for themselves and us make judgements on the merits ("yeah, right on" or "hypocrite" or "naive fool") but I'm waiting for the slime machine to catch up with him. Have we found out that he molests puppies or has it been leaked how badly he screwed the blind nuns' charity yet? Because you know that's the next step in all this

Good thing those kids aren't midgets, or I'd really be pissed.

To be honest, that's what I figured when I saw the thread had bumped.

I will, however, say that I'd imagine it's no worse than 50-50 than no "smear" is necessary, the easiest way to hang most people is with the truth.
