IWS #192: Results

1. Name a vegetable that is not generally considered "green."

17 tomato
14 carrot
4 potato
3 corn
1 eggplant
1 lettuce
1 onion
1 beet

Two horse race here. A few did note in their entries that a tomato was not technically a vegetable, but hey, this is Stupid we're talking here. Mildly surprised corn didn't have a better showing.

2. Name a prepared food which, while possibly containing ingredients that have been cooked, is generally not thought of as being cooked.

15 salad
12 sushi
5 sandwich
2 cake
2 ice cream
1 cereal
1 potato salad
1 nachos
1 frozen pizza
1 jello
1 tofu

Another question where if you didn't have one of the top two choices, you had no chance. I actually had sushi in mind when phrasing the question -- it's typically thought of as raw, but the rice itself HAS been cooked. I didn't even think of salad, which is funny considering I have them all the time. For scoring I considered 'potato salad' to be an intrinsically different beast.

3. Name a type of "cake" which is not a cake in the traditional baking sense (egg/sugar/flour mixture cooked in an oven, etc.). This need not be edible.

11 pancake
8 urinal/toilet cake
7 cheesecake
5 fruit cake
2 beefcake
2 Cake (band)
2 rice cake
1 cocaine cake
1 ice cream cake
1 meatloaf
1 patty-cake

This question was actually inspired by an odd craving I had for funnel cake (though I'd have gone with urinal, myself). I'm a little surprised the band only had two votes.

4. Name a condiment that might not be found at a typical sports arena.

9 mayo
6 soy sauce
5 salsa
3 horseradish
2 pepper
2 ranch
2 relish
2 steak sauce
1 bbq sauce
1 capers
1 Grey Poupon
1 honey
1 honey mustard
1 hot sauce
1 mustard
1 pickles
1 sauerkraut
1 syrup
1 tartar sauce

Wow, now THAT is a spread. I'm actually a little surprised mayo won here, as I'd guess that any park serving burgers might have mayo (I think my minor league stadium does). But as it's not one of the big hot dog toppers, it is a logical choice.

5. Name a food or drink that men, in general, do not consume.

9 quiche
5 wine
5 wine cooler
4 cosmopolitan
2 salad
2 tea
2 daiquiri
1 appletini
1 Bailey's
1 cottage cheese
1 margaritas
1 martini
1 milk
1 mimosa
1 onion
1 slimfast
1 tofu
1 vegetables
1 water
1 yogurt

I actually went to great lengths to NOT phrase this question as "Name a food that real men don't eat." But, that's really what I had in mind here. All of you who still came through with quiche, congrats. And, you're old. I considered 'wine' and 'wine cooler' to be separate answers because, well, they're completely different drinks. Oh, and Dark Cloud and Lathum - you've been called out.

6. Give the name of a food which contains each of the letters "n", "o", and "t". These letters may appear multiple times and may be in any order.

11 doughnut/donut/dough knot
4 wonton/wonton soup
2 cantaloupe
2 cotton candy
2 mutton
2 pomegranate
2 rigatoni
2 t-bone
2 watermelon
1 cheese on toast
1 coconut
1 fig newton
1 garlic knot
1 hot dong
1 I Can't Believe It's Not Butter [ed: of 69?]
1 manicotti
1 nothing
1 nougat
1 pinto beans
1 rotini
1 tenderloin
1 tuna noodle casserole

I rather expected that question to be a mess, but a rather strong contingent focused in on Homer's passion. I was fairly forgiving here, grouping all spellings (even "dough knot", which I would actually guess had more of a garlic knot in mind). I did the same for wonton/wonton soup.

But uh, "hot dong"? Really??

Interesting questions - I was sure I had botched more than two of them. Spent forever on the n-o-t one, it seemed, only to blow it.

I got #5 after I had already submitted wine, but I missed so badly on #2, it made no difference.

Can't believe I whiffed so bad on donuts. I had no idea on #5 so I went with salad, even though I eat them all the time.

The letters just stuck in my head. I thought of hot dong, and couldn't stop giggling, which turned into maniacal laughter. I tried waiting a bit, but then came back and thought of hot dong, so I went with it.

I really fell big time on #6 with Garlic Knot, but I too am surprised to see Mayo - that is a typical condiment at ballparks to me.

I was doing great until donut. Can't believe I didn't think of that.
All I could think of was cantaloupe. Glad Sushi came to me finally as before that all I could think of was shrimp cocktail which I knew wouldn't do it.
