Getting over a cold

After getting over the flu, I occasionally have this persistent cough that won't go away for a week or two. All the other symptoms are gone, there's just a tickle in the back of my throat I just can't shake. Anyone have any tips/remedies for getting rid of it sooner? I'm tired of sucking down cough drops at a rate of three packs a week.

Good hot shower tends to help me. Crank the heat up, and relax. Helps a bit.

Tea w/ lemon or honey is a good one as well.

SOMETIMES Delsym cough syrup works, depending on the kind of cough. Certain colds I've gotten, taking a hit of that before I went to bed worked wonders.

Coughs that last longer than a week should probably get checked.

I'm being overly cautious because a coworker of mine suddenly passed away from pneumonia because she didn't get a two-week old cough checked out by a doctor.

I get the common cold about once a year, and I have the same symptoms you're talking about. My cough sticks around for 1-2 weeks, and is usually worse in the evenings. I've used Delsym and had pretty good success with it. I also stay away from dairy until my symptoms are mostly gone. Dairy makes your body produce a lot of mucus, and when that drips down your throat, it causes irritation.

I don't know about pneumonia from a common cold. I mean, I know it happens, but I think the likelihood of you getting it is extremely small. I get exactly what you're talking about every year, and have for the majority of my life.
