Anyone have a "connected" home

It seems like managing things like doors, temp, alarms, lights, etc., is all becoming very accessible through smartphones. I'm curious what people's experiences have been, if any.

Example
Nest | The Learning*Thermostat | Home

I work for an UC / AV integrator and our Video Networking Engineer and our Sales Engineers all have taken their homes to the next level and they are "connected" in a sense. Full blown home control including lights, thermostats, alarm systems and of course AV all from their phone, tablet or desktop...

I've got several things at the house. I have the 3M internet thermostat, which allows me to fully control the thermostat from my iPhone, anywhere I am. I liked the 3M offering because it didn't have a monthly charge, as most of the other ones I researched had. It has worked like a champ. I travel for work a lot, and if I forget to set the thermostat to away before I leave, I can always just set it from the phone. On the flip side, I can set it back on the way home, and the house is at the desired temp when I arrive.

The doors piece is the next thing I'm looking to add. There are a couple of companies that are about to come to market with WiFi/bluetooth locks in the $100-$150 range. I have an electronic door lock on the front door now, but it has no communication ability.

I'm assuming things like electronic door locks have some kind of battery backup on site?

The one I currently have runs off of a battery, plus there is an old fashioned key if the battery dies.

I train techs on installation of the TWC Intelligent Home product, which does a lot of that type of stuff. Meh.
